Cost of living isn't cheap and unfortunately, the Carson City/Minden/Genoa is growing fast. The beautiful scenery of open fields and hillsides are already marked for bulldozing for track homes. Traffic is terrible and increasing rapidly, and the tourist population doesn't help matters. It won't be the nice quaint community it is for long with the influx of Californians moving in and bringing their bad habits with them. I love it here, but I'm sad to see what's happening.
You can't stay small for ever. My hometown, Webster TX has grown from 329 to 10,000+. There's always the Smith Valley or Coleville if you want to keep small.
@OOOnanana And transplants like you are the reason I moved out. At least I lived there in its glory days, now you can have it as Little San Francisco. I got greener pastures now.
I would advise against it. The Carson Valley is no longer beautiful. It is rapidly becoming overpopulated, and criss crossed with highways headed elsewhere. Climate change is having grave consequences on what is already the most arid state in the United States. More people moving in does not look good for water availability. Also, Reno used to be a charming small city. No longer, unless you like the trashy mini Las Vegas ambience. Think twice or more before you make your move. I was born and raised in Reno. Sadly I don't think I could go back.
