The ST-21 Program was looked into as a potential upgrade to the Tomcat to make it a 4.5gen fighter/interceptor. If you could find an accurate model of this proposed airframe on DCS I believe that you could generate a ton of interest in your content with it.
8:10 Hey GS, I actually use C-5’s to shoot at other missiles all the time. Works great. Saved my butt so many times! Should have sent two SM-6’s, that way one gets hit by his R-77 as a sacrifice and the other goes through.
Everyone knows the F-14 was retired too soon. The only reason the F-14 was retired was because of politics and costs. If the Super Tomcat 21 was put in service with it's new price cutting technology in it's design and latest avionics and ordinance, it would practically be a Naval F-15X with thrust vectoring. There would be almost no need for another aircraft on the deck.
I don't find that outlandish at all. Maybe even in time it could sport a miniaturized directed energy weapon of some sort given the size of the bird. I would have love to see the ST-21
@larrybetteridgeii2817, really, now F35 can destroy the F14 from a long range, say "Don't dare to p off me." Even though Iranian Air Force is using it. So Israel has a chance to kill it.
I liked how the control inputs can be seen. Gives an idea of how much input/authority is required to make flight movements. Yes, as a weapon system, retired too early for fleet defender, but Navy operations are hard on airframes. Logistics, maintenance and aircrew familiarization, all had a hand in the demise of the Tomcat. The F-14's sexyness remains.
Oh heck yea to the Felon with the hyper sonic. I used to work on the Tomcat back in the mid 90s, it wasn't really sunset because it was not a good airplane anymore, but it took a lot of man hours to keep it flying. There were times that I personally know that some of the methods that we used to keep some of them up were not "Standard Operating Procedures" LOL. Love your vids keep doing what you do
As someone that worked on F-14 avionics and loved the aircraft the maintenance on them was a constant affair in every area. Sadly I agree with their retirement though I think they could have served better asking allies and partner nations for a few extra years were it not for the Iran factor
@@benrichey2593 all aircraft require maintenance of course but some are far more time and resource intensive by entire factors. The F14 vs F18 was a drastic reduction increasing the cost to value significantly
I live by a National Guard base that performs air shows every 4th of July but I don't ever recall seeing the F-14 in the skies I must have missed out I've seen the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds plenty of warthogs / A-10s they used to call Fort Custer their home. What an experience it must have been to watch The f-14s Fly❤
Great video. The Tomcat will always have a place in my heart. Love how you have brought other real pilots into the vids. Keep up the great work sir. Thank you.
OMG I love the F14! It was the LOUDEST fighter I'd ever heard at an airshow😊 Up until that time I thought the F15 was loud.....not even close. Loves every minute of that demo
That's wild because the engines used in both are basically the same, they're interchangeable to a degree along with the F-16's single engine, just need to put on different outer bits to mount it into the engine bay and away she goes.
A big reason why the f-14 was retired was because the maintenance on it and the upkeep was expensive, so unless they found a way to keep the f-14 running but make it cheaper I think it was kind of inevitable they were going to take it out of service
I'd LOVE to see the fa-18 super hornet try this too, and the tomcat vs the world with this missile, vs f35s, j20s, f22 etc. I've a feeling the hornet wont preform like the tomcat- but will still be formidable.
Then, why are people making 5th gen aircraft. It's means they are fool to listen to that movie name. Which is not even real at all. Also, SU57 is not a joke. It's worse than you think. It can even challenge an F22 raptor in BVR. Do you even forget about the part or what?
GS, what if you had fired 2 missiles at him? His one missile would have knocked out your first one, but opened up the way for the second. What do you think?
I definitely think the F-14 was retired too early. I think the new version that was being developed could have greatly reduced the maintenance costs. It’s a shame.
I love the F-14 but its time was over. The naval bomber threat was gone and the F-14's ability to generate sorties was severely limited due to the outrageous maintenance requirements.
Dude, do you think SU57 is a joke to you. Also, no one has better or perfect information about this aircraft. Most of them are false. So you gonna listen or make note for yourself? Does it make any sense to you? Then why are people making 5th gen with no release of information.
I love your videos, and how you explain your tactics as you go, but... Why were you trying to push the Felon into the mountains? Wouldn't you have had an easier time if you pulled him out over the flatlands, or better yet over the water?
Hi, I wasnt trying to push him into the mountains he was always there, he just wouldn’t leave. Finally he did leave and that’s when that last missile got him. The fact that he wouldn’t leave the mountains is why I had to climb a few times to try to lob my missiles into the valleys coming top down. Unfortunately his r77s intercepted those missiles.
What if you double-tapped the SM6 with the smaller AIM to lure the Felon to shoot his missile to intercept the SM6 while the smaller AIM hunts down the Felon. It would be interesting to see the shift in strategy.
