Retirement and the Changes Required 

A couple of years before I retired I bought myself an expensive new sewing machine and a special table for it to sit in, I have never regretted it. It will last me the rest of my life and I use it several times a week making quilts and more recently dolls. I see myself as a quilter and have completely let go of my past occupations. My head is full of what I can do next, new ideas and challenges. My husband now writes books and has three successful published novels and two in the pipeline. There’s always a new direction or challenge in life but you have to go find it.

we all had our toys ! they say he who has the most toys when he dies wins....I never believed it for a minute sir ! The job I had I very much hated...Had to stay as my wife needed the insurance as she had cancer, back then if I had went to another job then her condition would be declared pre existing, and insurance would be denied, or terribly expensive, so I stayed with that job, gritted my teeth, and endured by lots of prayer...

I found myself being 65 and so much has changed. When I was 60 I could walk 10 to town. I couldn’t do that now. I’m having problems with balance, I have tinnitus which is hell. I’ve had to make adjustments. My memory not as good. I’m lonely and I think that’s the hardest thing. I don’t have a car. Broke down can’t afford to fix. There are perks. My taxes are about a third what they were. I am lucky I own my own home. It needs repairs. If it’s not a new water heater, or toilet, the stairs need to be repaired as well as the gutters. Being a single older person you need help and that’s hard to find or afford. I just keep on trucking

Retired in Miami Beach has one season......very easy living in that respect. life is change and acceptance is key.....Peace and love

I have a nice pile of stuff, but it consists of LP's, old books and art materials, a picnic basket and walking shoes. that's all i need to live out the rest of my life. i am finding people around me are not able to share in my peaceful future, ive become to learn to keep my circle of company very small and my creative lively senses as large as possible. Read a good book, create beautiful art, and listen to beautiful instrumentals, happiness will be abundant.

No retired yet, but come here often because since I was a kid, I loved to learn from other people and listen to their word of wisdom.

I am 45. I sit at a desk all day: I hope to work on my feet somehow and have adventures going forward, but I am not sure what the heck to do workwise. Anyhow, this is a fantastic video! To me it has overtones of Stoicism. I hit "Subscribe."

yea, holding on to the past is easy; however, letting go is much harder to do. All parts of life are changing - health, financial, family, etc. but as I get older it seems to be changing faster than I ever thought. It is almost like time is going faster and faster which just reinforces to me that the end of life is nearer than I can imagine, even though I don't know when that might be, but it is coming. So like you I am thinking retire early and enjoy what you have left, find new things to do that you enjoy, and make new friends if that is what it takes.

I'm experiencing nothing but relief & peace currently. I still wake up by 05:30 am naturally typically, but that sure beats the alarm going off at 04:30 am. Suppose I was 'Teched' and other means out of my job. I was a medication nurse at least the last 10 yrs. Meds went computerized in 2017, many retired I was too young, now there's these designer anti-opioid narcotics I used to give that're heavily abused. The job got so much harder since 2017, good RIDANCE! Thanks Tom!

I’ll buy the buy the my son who’s now 37, just approaching those difficult years when he realises he’s not going to be famous, invent a new Google or be CEO of Shell! We all have hopes and dreams then discover one day how ordinary we are…. and that it’s pretty OK actually.

I'm 55 and will be retiring in a couple of months. It's exciting and scary at the same time. I listen to your words and they constantly give me the reminder that I've done the right thing. Hi Tom...I've found since retirement that I spend very little time talking about what I did in my working years...only briefly if asked...prefer to look at the present and immediate future. This approach works well for me. I hadn't thought much about until hearing your insights on this interesting subject...thanks mate.
