Subscribe and set 🔔 » 7news.link/YTSubscribe | The standard of living for pensioners in Australia is so, so hard. Which is why, for some, retiring overseas - on a full Australian pension - is a brillianbt option. Norah Ohrt lived most of her life in Perth, Western Australia. As a single woman approaching retirement, Norah realised that if she chose to stay in Perth, with her modest means, she would likely live in poverty. So, she investigated how to retire overseas - and found that by moving her whole life to the south of Spain she could afford to live where she wanted, and how she wanted, and in incredible style. This is how Norah did it. Portions of this story originally aired on Sunday Night in 2019. Now, we haver released it as a full documentary. 7NEWS reporter Anegla Cox travelled to Martos, in Andalusia, to meet Norah and see her incredible home and meet her friends.

As a single middle aged woman You give me so much inspiration to live a better life,put back into a community that you loved in Australia and participate in your new community! People who see the negative in this story are ones who don’t understand how small businesses works How much small business puts into the tax system in Australia I hope more retirees watch this as it is a wonderful story of how to retire with dignity and respect
@TheMightyAbs
@TheMightyAbs День назад
No people who are negative on this story understand it's nothing to do with small business nothing to do with taxes paid during life. Every productive member of society pays taxes works hard during their working years whether it is as an employee or self employed. The negativity is simply pointing out that recieving a tax free indexed for life pension funded by Australian taxpayer's comes with a moral responsibility to atleast be living in Australia to spend the money in Australia to support local jobs, small business and to allow the country to make back a portion of the pension expense back in taxes paid by those local small businesses and workers that service the needs and wants of pensioners. Far from this being an inspiring story, I see this as a danger to the Australian economy and the sustainability of the generous taxpayer funded pension system the more pensioners move overseas and siphon off pension payments that otherwise would have been spent in Australia to cheaper countries like Spain and Thailand etc. What may be clever and good for the individual is not in the public interest. I hope the Australian Government watches this story and tightens the pension eligibility rules to stop this kind of retiree country arbitrage. People can do what they like when they have saved to fund their own retirement. When you are on the public purse there is an implied moral responsibility I believe is being broken and it is selfish behaviour at the expense of Australia.

@@TheMightyAbs so you're born in Australia live and work you're whole life in Australia, pay taxes and contribute to the community and economy but when you retire you shouldn't be entitled to a pension unless you agree to be shackled for the rest of your life to that country? What a crock of shite! That sounds like slavery to me why would anyone want to waste their lives working in a country that would keep them captive in their old age. Deciding to immigrate to another country in retirement doesn't negate the years of taxes that person paid throughout their working life or their right to a hard earned pension.

@@TheMightyAbsYou seem to be spending way too much time on this Is it because you’re comment didn’t get pinned by 7news Australia 🇦🇺 We live in a democratic country (lucky for us) Every person has the right to spend their money how they see fit Regardless of who pays them including welfare recipients When it comes to supporting business,Most businesses target demographic is not people on any forms of welfare payments because it’s challenging for people on low incomes to afford the goods and services they provide It’s a fact ! Self funded retirees have worked very hard to have what they have,so they can still be able to live in Australia No one wants to leave their home that they were born in I know this most of my family including myself are migrants Norah should be commended on making her dollar go further She is not a burden on the health system or housing Which would cost more to the Australian taxpayer

They are not forgotten when the kids show up to inherit property. In other south eastern countries the adult children look after their parents in old age. The concept of family looking after one another has been lost in this individualistic country.

@@TheMightyAbs not everyone wants to be a burden on their kids!!!
@TheMightyAbs
@TheMightyAbs 13 часов назад
@@nicolemurphy2629 Were your kids a burden on you when you raised them? I would assume no, so then why would you be a burden on your kids when they are simply caring for a parent that cared for them? Why is it not just and morally the correct thing for kids to support their parents in old age and help them take their last steps when the parents helped the kids take their first steps? No other taxpayers are expected to fill that role in a clinical unemotional way paying for their retirement, medicine, healthcare and housing with all the ticket clippers, government beaurocrats and profit margins along the way. It's ok to be a burden on other people or other people's kids but not your own? It's ok for other people to be a burden on your kids but not you? I just find the whole logic myopic and individualistic. The reason why people from South eastern asian countries have the reputation of having deep pockets when they turn up to auctions is because eastern culture is not about individual it's about the group. It's about the family. They are bringing family money to the table and combining forces for the joint best interests of the family. The old and the young are expected to look after each other and that in no way is considered a burden.

Hi as an Irish/Australia who has just been in Spain visiting my childhood Dublin friend who’s retired I can tell you it’s a great place not only from a money point of view but just as the Nora said they really respect and cherish older people which I love. I also spend time in Thailand over the years and it’s the same thing the way older people are look at. She was exactly right when she said in Australia / Most Western countries people are so busy chasing the mighty dollar they have no time for the elderly just stick they in a nursing home or a small bedsit and forget about them it’s very sad.

Great on her , she had the courage and made the efforts to learn a new language and culture , it keeps her young in mind and spirit..i am French from the south of France, very Latin culture too , after 38 years in Australia but i must alas admit that ìf Australia is still a great opportunity for young people,but when you retired and alone , it is very isolated for single retired woman , you become invisible,not a critique just my personal observation and opinion , and Many Australian family are spread out so far from each others that old single people are often alone, for exemple flying to perth from Brisbane , return can be as expensive that flying to Europe . Be aware that Spain , like France, each area , each part of spain are very differents from each others ,and maybe some parts are not so "assertive " as this person finds, as Spain has a history the last century of political opression under Franco dictatorship , so older people maybe alas had to keep their opinion for themselves and not revolt , and some others parts were very conservative and catholic, BUT the younger generation of Spanish people are very assertive ...for me, being French, i find Australian people" not so "assertive 😅, but then, i come from a culture of very opinionated and assertive people ( to say the least 😅😅.. ) well no flying to France atm , all airline on strike, and last months it was the trains 😂😂...i wish her the best , she has a great positive attitude ..

I will be joining you with my Spanish speaking Mexican husband and son soon! We will be moving to stunning Andalucia in our late 50s ,which is just a few years away. You have done well Nora, bless you.

After the lockdowns people in Europe are struggling financially too My relatives overseas are doing it tough too !Everyone loves to have a bash at Australia but when I visited my parents country all the relatives did was give me a hard time because I was not born in Cyprus. They didn’t even cared to know me . This lady is so lucky that she is accepted in Spain . It is not like that in Cyprus . So I appreciate Australia even if it is expensive now .

@norahohrt4922
@norahohrt4922 6 дней назад
@rudymazar5266 I think it depends on the amount of pension a Spanish person receives, there is a sliding scale related to the years worked, where worked, the income while working, taxes paid etc. Not all receive the same amount. I can afford all my living expenses on my Australian pension.

I was looking at Portugal but they recently changed the visa and now you can’t go to some area as the locals are being priced out of the housing market. They did offer a golden visa for retirees which was free from tax but they have stopped that all together. I believe you can still go to Madeira one of the islands but not to the silver coast where I was looking. 😢

For who can see from another angle they trying to get rid of old population so no need to pay pension, Australians have to retire near they loved ones near they roots. Adventure in old age is not easy, they make to look so good, but what about loneliness dementia no support of family if sick. The government have to fix the problem and not discard the people who work hard to build this country.

@Schmunzelfee
@Schmunzelfee 9 дней назад
Honestly, probably for a long time. A reason why people can not climb stairs anymore is because they lose muscle, which happens as you become older. Many people in countries like Spain, Greece and Italy are mobile and active until their 90ies. Also because of the lifestyle there.
