We travelled through Mexico for a month at the last of 2020. It's such a beautiful country and would be an amazing place to live in. There are definitely places that are more expensive than others, but it is possible to live simply and cheaply there. We ended up living in Nicaragua during covid due to border closures. Living in a Central American country is an amazing experience and so much cheaper than living in a western country.

We’ve been Ajijic for 4 days now. The people are friendly and the lake and mountains are beautiful. I researched Ajijic for 2 months before coming on this short trip. Here are some things that surprised me though none of them are inherently bad. First, the weather has seemed warmer than I expected. I think that’s due to the high humidity, very bright sunshine, and energy required to walk uphill on cobblestone streets. Fortunately we got one of the rare Airbnb’s with air conditioning but it was out our second night here due to a thunderstorm that took out a transformer. Second, we should have planned more activities in advance. Our first full day we stayed busy looking at the small shops between Centro and the Malecon and lucked out finding a bar with awesome live music that started at 4 pm. After that day, we ran out of impromptu entertainment opportunities. For example, the nice massage and facial spa was already booked solid for the next 3 days. Third, though people are friendly here like in Texas where we’re from, making new friends was not as easy as expected. During our previous 8 meals when we were sitting in restaurants around a bunch of other westerners, no one said hi or smiled struck up conversations with us. Only when I initiated the conversation did people respond. This is the same as I’d expect in Texas but I’d heard so many raves about the friendliness in Ajijic, I had unrealistic expectations. Fourth, Uber’s are not plentiful and taxis don’t drive around looking for customers. The taxis seem to congregate in El Centro so it was necessary for us to walk 10 minutes to get a taxi. Fifth, Ajijic downtown is not as clean and organized as Playa del Carmen or Oaxaca. In retrospect, I should have expected this since it’s much smaller. I also realized once here that the property taxes here are minuscule so having thousands of foreigners live here doesn’t generate much money for the local government to make capital improvements. In conclusion, we still enjoyed Ajijic, and hope our insights help others have accurate expectations.

+annette thompson I was studying the various videos about that region and the lack of services there should be a red flag to Americans with expectations. I expect somone who can not at all afford the states and speaks the local language and is not entirely misplaced in such surroundings would fit. But I note that Americans feel best around others with similar viewpoints so Mexico might be lonesome for all of them eventually. Reason, I suspect, the ones I have met that retired there always vist the states at the first opportnity. If you are already half dead and don't care about entertainment or are fully self reliant, you can make do in that very out of the way region. But perhaps, finding a way to just travel there when you need cheap housing, with an eye to returning when you can, sounds like a strategy I would utilize.

sir if you retire with about 1200 dollars a month you can even hire someone down there to help you do your chores at home like cooking for you , cleaning , doing your laundry etc most woman will do it for anywhere from 50 to 100 dollars a week so that means that if you pay even 100 dollars a week thats still only 400 dollars a month for having a maid that cooks for you even go shopping your groceries for you if you can not do it , cleaning your place , doing your laundry and stuff like that i am telling this since you mention you are disable and may need some help or some one to help you , you can afford it and like i said there are people ( women ) that will do it for less than 100 dollars a week paid .

Another great video Jerry. This video allows the viewer to see how *low you can go" given different circumstances. In Mexico, the average household net-adjusted disposable income per capita is 13,085 USD a year, compared to the USA average of 25,908 USD a year. It's hard not to appreciate the difference in the quality of life available to those more fortunate to make more choices. I'm thankful that I will be playing a role in supporting the Mexican economy when we arrive. :)

$2:50 is £1.93. In the UK 500g of good durum wheat pasta is 20p (with 100p to the pound). Fifteen eggs costs £1. Bags of ramen noodles are less than 10p. An 800g wholemeal loaf made with proper wholegrain flower is 36p. A kilo - 2.2lbs - of oats is 75p. 355g of broccoli is 36p. 800g of ground beef is about £2.50. A tin of sardines is 34p. I can buy a kg of curry powder for £2.99, and a kg of dry kidney beans for £2.50. In short, eating 3,000 healthy calories for £1.93 is easy: you can do it for a lot less. Maybe the pound is undervalued, but food has been dirt cheap in the UK for a long time, and there are good reasons to think that Brexit will make it cheaper still.

I'm in the UK and I like to think I shop wisely but those prices are like nothing I have seen! 15 eggs for a pound? Granted I only ever buy free-range but that's about half of what even the cheapest supermarkets are charging. I can't comment on the meat and sardines, as a vegetarian, but the cheapest 800gm wholemeal bread is about 55p here. Where on earth are you buying from?

My wife and I have lived in Baja Sur for 12 years. $300/month? Most people could not do that. Here are some more realistic numbers for most people: It's not as inexpensive here as it is on the Mexican mainland, but our 2 person food budget is around $250 US/month... in the US we spend more than this every week. We eat very healthy food, as much as we want, plenty of variety, plenty of meat and fish... we belong to a grow co-op where we pick our own organically grown produce and tree fruit, year around for $40/month (included in the $250 above). This budget is food and beverage only, excludes alcohol. We could find a reasonable place to rent for the two of us for around $400/month... simple living but comfortable. Add $75/month (average) for water/sewer/trash/electricity/propane including all the AC we need in the hot & humid months. Add in our annual vehicle maintenance cost, fuel, insurance, tools & toys, internet, subscriptions, a bit of entertainment & dining out 6-8 times per month, etc... we could get by for $1,200/month with no travel. With travel to the US 2x per year, we spend around $2,000 per month but we live quite well, including maid and gardener.

Hi Jerry, I just watched your video, good job of spelling out all the realistic costs of living typical for most people. Your numbers confirm mine very well, projecting $1,300 US/mo basic living cost with reasonable entertainment and dining allowance for a moderately social couple... add rent and you project $1,700-1,900/mo... this doesn't include alcohol, cigarettes, or travel to the US, maid and/or gardener. MORE REALISTIC #S: These costs would vary for every person, but for a couple to live here for under $1,000/mo would be a very tight budget not allowing anything for toys, entertainment, hired help, internet or subscriptions, travel or health care. Mexican families (husband, wife, 2-3 children) frequently manage to live on less than $500/mo, but they live on dirt floors in unfinished shacks made of scavenged materials, with almost no utilities. They maintain their own rickety old vehicles (and frequently walk when the vehicle is inoperable), and paying for food and warmth is a constant losing struggle. So why do Americans live in Mexico? Quality of life. You cannot live in the US for $2,000/mo with same level of comfort... in the US it would be more like $4,000 or $5,000/mo to live at the same standard and with the same freedoms. Suggestion: Your video title "Live in Mexico for $300/mo" is misleading. It would be more honest to include a disclaimer in your video info, or append commentary to the video itself.

@scottc8152
@scottc8152 4 года назад
It doesn't have to be hard work. I have chickens, I found out I love having them. I use wood chips in the coop, so that needs cleaned only once a year (no smell). The wood chips and chicken poop are piled once a year with lots of water and hot composted, and used in a Ruth Stout garden. No weeding or watering. It doesn't have to be a lot of work, it CAN be fun if done right. Beside, you need to keep moving in retirement to stay healthy.

Life is Math. 1 Youth is Addition i.e. you are constantly adding new things and experiences to yourself 2 Teenage Years is Subtraction i.e. You are forced to drop your childish happy ways and you must conform to society by removing your desires for freedom etc 3 Adult years is Multiplication. You begin to gather "stuff" , things, cars property, husbands, wives, reputation etc. 4 Old Age and Retirement is division. You divide up all your stuff if you have any wisdom in you at all and you realise you cannot bring any of it with you. So it's much easier to have little in old age

My daughter is married to a young man from a rural part of Bosnia, right on the Una river within walking distance of Croatia. It is also a very affordable and beautiful place to live, and one day they and my grandchildren will inherit the ancestral home and land there. This video reminds me of that but of course a more tropical version!! There are many little jewels, little pieces of paradise, scattered around the world. And they are great for those who choose to live simply. As for myself, I could do without many of the modern luxuries we have come to depend on today, but one thing concerns me as someone over 55, and that is access to healthcare. For many of us that is a necessity, and although I’m not familiar with Mexico, I can tell you that in many countries around the world, especially in these little rural communities, access to healthcare is a huge challenge. However, if one is in good health and maintains a healthy lifestyle, this is truly ideal !!!! Thank you, I have subscribed to your channel and hope to see more!!!

Jerry, The reason many people do not have enough money to retire on is because most of the people who are retiring now lost their savings, their 401ks, and their homes during the Great Recession of 2008. It's not that they didn't plan ahead.
@IMSiegfried
@IMSiegfried 6 лет назад
ps: Editing to add, 2008 was the housing crash.
@JerryBrownTravels
@JerryBrownTravels 6 лет назад
Angela thank you for your comment. in the years before the housing crash to qualify for a home loan you have to show that you made for times your monthly payment. As an example if your monthly payment was $2000 a month you would have to show that you had an income of $8000 a month to qualify. But when the housing boom started people could qualify for that same two thousand dollars on month payment and only show that they were making $2000 a month. They call those the liars loans. The old rule of thumb was one fourth of your monthly income you would be able to afford your house payment. Even so a lot of people we're hoping their home again in value so they took out money ( the equity in their home) but in reality it was a false number so that's how so many people Lost their homes because. It's sad let so many people we're affected by the big banks. Thank you for your comment and keep doing what you do it's appreciate all

you forgot that it was not so much the banks fault, but the people who should not have been given loans in the first place were. Welfare recipients should not have been given loans to buy a house, but they were because of the carp the politicians forced on banks, no money down, no credit checks, any fool should have known that sooner or later the whole house of cards was going to collapse, and it did.

You can live a better life unless you want to be in very rural area in Mexico. You can rent a new studio apt including internet, cable tv plus utilities for $220.00 US monthly in Guanajato, I have done it. Walking distance to the main super market, close to historic downtown. Costco 1/2 hr away in Leon, excellent affordable medical. $600.00 - $700.00 monthly will give you a very nice life and you can afford to eat out.

I feel like I can reply to this as I know Memo and have been to his place. He doesn't own the land; he lives on it and takes care (and plants) the various trees in exchange for the place. Lo de Marcos is very small and even though Memo lives across the river he walks everywhere... into town etc. In fact, he offers Monday morning walks (for free) that last an hour or so, as well as arranging other tours to local farms etc. Transportation is no problem as a "local" bus goes every hour from here to PV and if you walk a couple blocks to the highway you can pick up a larger (Greyhound type) bus and go anywhere in Mexico. He manages quite well!

This man must not be on any medications. With his healthy PERMACULTURE lifestyle I am sure that he was easily weaned off of all medications. Love his diet because I eat pretty much the same way as he does also without alcohol or cigs.

I thought you had to prove you make $2,000 minimum per month to live long term in Mexico. In that case, I would think this may be a bit misleading.
@JerryBrownTravels
@JerryBrownTravels 6 лет назад
If you get a six month visa you don't have to show any money or any income. But you have to cross the border every six months and get a new six month visa. That's what the people do here if they cannot afford the monthly income to live here permanently. So it's not misleading

Yes you can live on 300 us in Mexico BUT that is poverty level . 300 us a month is what you pay for a low cost cleaning only maid. He can because he is producing his own food. He also is living off grid. Do you really want to live with no electricity or running water. Yes you can live realisticly on 600 us a month. Again it wont be living in Paradise but its very duable. More realistic. You wont be living in a retierment comunity. You will be renting in a low to médium clase área. Important at the end of the interview he casual la says free medical. NOT true. Medical services are cheaper, much cheaper but its is NOT free.

Not free for you, It is free for most working Mexicans. Also all costs are depending on the city and lately if the city is becoming popular among foreigners it will tend to rise prices, remember supply and demand. So if you want to live really cheap you could but it won't be among rich foreigners or Mexicans for any matter. Maids are one of the lowest paid jobs here in Mexico, so I disagree with your estimates a maid can get paid less than 300 in other cities.

Many in Mexico don’t need refrigerators because they go to the store or market every morning to buy fresh food to cook later. That’s how my grandma did it and so did the people in the village. The food tasted different.

Jerry and Lori, I love your videos and am getting really excited about the idea of coming to Mexico! It really seems like I could afford to do this. My health is lagging in the U.S. with all the stress and uncertainty here lately.. Eating better, walking more and swimming would be so good for my soul. I also long to feel a sense of community (I live alone.) Curious to know if there are professionals down there working on line and how the taxes work in that case. Anyway.....I could ask questions all day, so I'm grateful that you have so many videos! THANKS!

Streets are full of dogs and their crap. Drugs are a problem here, so is loud music and drinking on the beach until sunrise a regular activity. Almost every family here has been effect by crime. I have been coming to LDM since 1983 and it is going down hill - too Bad. I liked the days when Peter O'tolle lived here in Casa Blanca on the hill at the southern end of the beach!

It's similar in the caribbean islands, Philippines, Ecuador, Colombia, etc. If you are retired or can work from your computer, I suggest you visit one of these countries, cause the writing is on the wall. America has enemies from middle east, north korea, russia, china and even from within, its wise to find your Casablanca so when the war begins you have a place to escape.
