have a two year old springer spaniel for two months now and your videos with her twin Ruby are so helpful in getting me to understand and enjoy her. She was competing for attention with working parents and young kids - now she has a full time companion.
Very helpful video George. I’ve a 10mth old lab pup who’s started the same problem but only runs ins circles after collecting a dummy. She will retrieve a tennis ball or sliotar to hand no problem... I will work with a dummy in a lane way for a number of sessions. And will hopefully resolve this issue Thanks 👍
I have trained 2 female springers for trialing / hunting and from day 1 started in a hallway with closed doors. The bad habit never surfaced. The issue with retrieving is that it can be over done. A perfect retrieve to hand is the most important function they will perform. Springers have the game finding ability born in them as well as the inclination to quarter with a little help from you. All the rest is just training, i.e. hup, steady to flush heeling etc. My two dogs were sired from a Sire & Dam from Wales (Satan Kennel) by Talbot Radcliff who wrote an excellent book named Spaniels For Sport. I'm sure that you are an experienced handler and love this breed as much as I have. By the way, the rule of naming the dog was that it had to start with the letter "R". My fist was Pepper (Red Pepper) and the second, Riser (Early Riser). I like Reggie as well. I am living my past with your videos. Thanks.
Thank you man. My puppy is 5 months old and we have done the basic instructions like sit, stay, down and wait but qith the retrieving i throw the dummy, he colects it but runs away the nezt moment. I wil try minimizing the area as you said and i hope its over. By the way is it time to cut off giving him treats as reward or no? Thank. You
How do you get a dog to retrieve only when told? I have a 9 month old spaniel who will retrieve but as soon as she sees a dummy she's gone. She will sit and lie down on command but will not retrieve only when told
Another good video. I have a 4 month old sprocker that has started doing this but more concerning is she has started to be less willing to give the ball up. Obviously she is still very young so im not too fussed about bringing the ball straight back but i am a little concerned about possible guarding issues in the future . If you have any advice it would be much appreciated. Thanks
I'd expect nothing less from so young a pup, possessiveness is natural,as they gain a little maturity they will begin to understand that giving you the ball is the best thing to do and more rewarding than holding on to it.
How are you hope your doing well your videos have been very helpful to train my Springer spaniel. She is great to collect dummies on land and water, just my issue is sometimes one of the dummies kinda goes up and down in the water and she doesn't want to get it when it's like that. I feel the same thing will happen if a duck falls into the water, if you have any tips I'd much appreciate your help. Thanks very much Mikie Leahy
Find a dummy that doesn't bob up and down for now, ducks won't behave as such unless just winged, then the fun starts and you'll find out a lot about your dog, good luck.
springerspanielful thank you - that's given me hope that I'm not doing it all wrong... had spaniels in the past, but always from pups - this one is a rehome at 5 months 😀 lots of work n fun...
Great video George. I like to use the stop whistle in the sitting position to reinforce the steady stay put command . My bitch is superb at retrieving and need to work on the hunting part , thems the joys of Gundogs 😂👌
