We compare the inside of a 1988 1G carphone to its 2013 great-grandchild. Other than a big color screen, what else has changed? Let's teardown both to take a look: bit.ly/2kdoJFl

The manufacture of this cellphone was Novatel. I believe this is Model 8300, the 2883 written on the TX shield was an internal number to NovAtel. You are missing a speaker box or cradle that was the phone ringer. The SIP package on the transmitter PCB is a power control module for 8 different power outputs from 5 mW - 3 W. This model had both rx and tx in the 800MHz band. Another model for Europe worked in the 900 MHZ band.The yellow wire was used to run a horn relay so you could hear your phone ring, when your car was parked. Main headquarters were located in Calgary Alberta, Canada.

Right answer! I love the idea of your car horn honking to let you know you had a call coming in! I really struggled to find additional information for this unit, thank you for filling in some of the gaps!

An antenna *can* be 1/2 the size of the wavelength, but also 1/4 wavelength resonance is very popular...but that's not entirely the answer to the "1 inch antenna". GSM in the US uses 1900 MHz-ish as well as 850MHz-ish. A 1/4 wavelength at 1900 MHz is still around 4cm in length, which is about an inch and a half. 850MHz is about 35cm. So, how do they do it? They use fractal antennas for wideband resonance. A fractal leverages area moreso than length (well, it condenses length into area). I've seen a few different varieties, even Sierpenski carpets. Usually designers will favor using pass/notch filtering for each of the modules needing RF and just use one main antenna for all three.

You can also have antennas that are full wavelength and multiples, you just have to match the impedance at the feed point (which you can put on the ends, or somewhere in the middle).

I have to admit, antenna design is a bit beyond my current skill set! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

My step-dad had a car phone in his Mercedes Benz back in the 80s, and that looks very familiar.

The eeprom is where the number for the phone was coded in. No SIM card for 1G.

GSM is not a general term, its for 2G

Yes and no. The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is a standard developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to describe the protocols for second-generation (2G) digital cellular networks. 2G networks developed as a replacement for first generation (1G) analog cellular networks.

would be nice to see another video with this. Taking the guts out of the modern phone, putting them into the old one and somehow getting the handset to make phone calls. Imagine walking around with that and talking on the phone...
@a531016
@a531016 5 лет назад
Now that would be an incredible challenge! I think there is an interesting SDR project to set up a personal 1G network to be had though?

That last pin is probably a park/neutral switch to keep drivers from making/receiving calls while driving

The last pin/connector thing is for powering the motor of the antenna to pop-it-up.. or something like that

@SlinkyStoney

David Edwards so... what is it for.. Because I thought it would be for the antenna just like their mobile brick counterpart that you could carry around and put it the bag things that need their antenna to be extended before making calls.
@a531016

The correct answer was shouted out by losttwo1 - it was a horn connection. You could set the phone to honk the horn of your car if you weren't in it to let you know someone was calling! I'd never heard of this feature before the tear down, and for some reason found it hilarious?
@SlinkyStoney
@SlinkyStoney 5 лет назад
David Edwards haha! Wow... good thing that you could set it else your car will honk every time you got a call. Seems like it is a sound profile thing that android mobiles have that I never use other than “general” and “silent”. Probably that is the “outdoor” sound profile thing. Haha!

A good comparison video. Thanks. As you say, there's not much romanticism in an SOC solution. And you're not going to discover how it works either.
