It's more culturally relevant to the 1990s. Growing up back then we often thought how cool it would be have a system that could play BOTH SNES and Sega games. (They also did not have TV back in 1853 or proper electricty for that matter) ;-]

Revision: After uploading this review, it came to my attention that the "C" button in Genesis games is mapped to the "L" shoulder button on the included controllers, which seems like a really odd choice. Didn't notice during my review, as the Genesis game I tested was Sonic 1. Given this info, I'd amend my final score to 7.5/10. Cheers! PS: Aspect ratio issue is discussed at 4:41 ;)

Nintendrew To have games play in 4:3, change the picture resolution on the monitor or TV you are using.

Not all monitors have that feature. My 1080p TV does not have that function, and neither his monitor.

Do you care at all that they steal their code? www.libretro.com/index.php/appeal-to-game-journalists-about-retro-bit-and-about-the-new-retro-emulation-industry-in-general/ This is getting infuriating, it doesn't seem that a single RU-vid channel cares at all that these guys are just stealing code. A different Retrobit console is called out there, but I'd be shocked if this one doesn't also steal code. And you call out the Retron, again, another big offender.

First thing I did when I found out about this is test whether my tv can force a 720p signal to 4:3. It cannot. :( I'll be sticking to the Retron 3.

You can just change the aspect ratio to 4:3 on your tv

Regarding the widescreen issues (no 4:3 option) most HD TVs I have used have an option to change the screen size, so you can switch the content to 4:3 in most cases that way.

As this is true the problem with this method of adaption causes additional input lag from the processing to scale the image the TV needs to do. There are rare outliers that actually had additional hardware to handle different screen formats. But those are from back in a time that the hardware was cheaper than the microchips and programming. That hasn't been true for some 20 years.

Just got mine the other day! I got the Ultimate Caveman Collection bundle version and I gotta say, I do love it. The response time matches my original system perfectly, the image comes out looking great and the variety of options is amazing. Worth every penny of the $80 I spent (loving the multi-cart too, super fun).

same, I had a boatload of them years ago, and all I need is this to have gone with them; especially since they've all become collectors items now and are either outrageously expensive, or you buy them and take the chance of them not working when you get them.

I have to say I’m becoming a fan of this company. I have their retro player handheld and it’s awesome. Worth it just to have Megaman 1 & 2. Although I’m planning on adding the Mega SG to my collection when it comes out in April, already owning the Super NT, but I love this unit. Especially since it’s cartridge based and not emulating. Sweet video.

I'm 3 years late to the party, but I'm probably going to pick this up as a Christmas gift for my gf. We have the retron 3 right now, but damaged the nes loader from wear and year. I want to get fladhcarts so we're not constantly changing games

I use the Retro Freak which is kinda like the Japan equivalent to the Retron 5, with the exception of being able to play PC Engine/Turbografx 16 hue cards as well. It's a pretty versatile little device that can play every game, rom hack, and repro I've thrown at it. It's all done with emulation however (like Retron 5), with the GBA emulator being kinda sketchy sometimes. This seems like a good alternative on the hardware emulation side for those who want it. Not for me though. I happen to be one of those individuals who is picky about 4:3 on retro titles 😉. Great review as always Drew 👍.

I must say, it’s pretty damn good. I lost my Genesis years ago, never had an NES or SNES before, but now I do as a 3-in-1 solution. I do plan to buy a Super Game Boy and Flashcards for all 3 systems, I did hear it is compatible as well as original and reproduction cartridges.

I need more SNES, NES and Genesis games. I’ve got one Super Famicom game (a newly released one) and it requires a bit of sliding for that one bit rest assured, it definitely works! You forgot to mention that the NES part works with Famicom adapters. I’ve got one and one Famicom game. Totally works! Try it and see for yourself!

I'm pretty sure Nintendo knew that the hardware would be cracked to run roms soon enough anyway, so it probably saved them alot of hassle having that feature implemented.

4:20 the SR3+ seems to be slightly yellowed and have a less absolute black, and considering the color of it saying nintendo Ia am willing to be it is tinted yellow

You said in the review that the sounds in Super Mario Bros. were mostly authentic, but you did not play any sounds in the video, even during the scene where you had gameplay playing in the background with you talking over it, you just have some other type of music playing here. Seems like an odd choice to me, especially since you have the game audio playinhg for every other game in the review except for this one. It comes across even more strange when it's a part you are trying to talk about the system having authentic audio.

I just received my retro trio plus today and honestly its amazing it played everything I so far played on it multi carts carts with special chips like the fx chip on snes and castlevania 3 for nes that some clones have trouble with and this is someone who has all 3 original consoles I have the one chip snes and the va4 Sega genesis with the Sony encoder And the Toaster nes is it perfect no but for 71 dollars its worth the price I highly recommend it alot of people give it bad reviews I thought it looked amazing yea the colors might be alittle off and the sound but not a deal breaker for me anyway

I read reviews about the Retron 5 saying that the "grips" that keep the cart in place are too strong and can damage the metal pins of those cartridges

S-Video support would've been nice. It makes me somewhat uncomfortable that the console is stuck on 16:9 through HDMI, but I don't consider it a dealbreaker for me. Nice review!

My NES clone I have is dying so I was thinking of getting another one until I found this video and I will be picking up this since I have never played SNES only NES N64,GameCube,Wii,Wii U and there are a few games I want to play for the SNES anyways.

I've heard with the retron 5 that the NES cartridge slot can cause some problems. That ruled it out for me. So I was wondering how this console felt compared to the nes/snes originals and whether it posed any issues for pins?

i didn’t know there were others who like playing retro games on 16:9! of course the image is more crisp at 4:3 but i have poor vision so 16:9 has always been more preferable to me since it uses the whole screen. great video! :)

You can probably use the master system adapter and I think the famicom adapter plus u can play super famicom games I just got my retro trio plus today I recommend it for the price it's a solid console

I may have to get one of these. I got rid of my Retron 5 because the input lag was driving me crazy. If this really is hardware-based, that may not be an issue.
