This is so strange, I placed my bottom drain yesterday, and was up at the crack of dawn today, checking on it 🤣. I built my 3 barrel, the day before (which nearly killed me btw 😬🤣) and YOU sir, and Weighty, are to blame for all of it. 🤣 Nah, seriously, I watched and picked little pieces from what you said, and built my own, because I'm poor, and need something that works for my "suddenly, surprise, didn't know they were thrown in my DOG POND😡, no filtration, gross", 20,000 gallon dirt water, pond.l, new koi family 😬. Yep, one day I walk out grab my Cattledogs ball, and see a 1" gold colored fish. I go in and ask my son, (who's 18th bday was the 13th btw 😏) "HEY DID YOU PUT GOLDFISH IN MY POND!😡". He laughs and says nope....then runs out and looks. He can't see anything, because it's pea soup, and ask me, was there really a little baby fish? I say yes, why? What did you do? He said I threw all the fish from my old pond in there! I was mortified. I said why didn't you tell me? There's no filter, aeration, etc. But, apparently these koi, loved it, because they finally bred after 7 years, and grew like ROCKETS! NO JOKE. And that's what that tiny fish was. He took a net, and netted up an entire net full of 1 in baby koi. He was delighted. I was horrified. And that sent me to youtube, where I found you and Wrighty ❤️. In thus started my journey in taking care of koi the correct way. And you should see all of the babies we have now. So my bottom drain is a little bit different, because I am still protecting a bunch of new babies. They say koi breed at most twice a year, however our female, has been observed spawning, seven times, kdifferent weeks) from April to this week. And we have recorded seven separate sets of eggs. I think she may have been saving them up a while. ❤️🐟😍🤣 So now, I will watch this video, and nervously watch my babies, their parents, and say a HUGE THANK YOU to you. My pond is sparkelie, but I don't want it too sparkelie. I want some funkie for them to enjoy.... That's what made them happy in the first place. What made their family grow. ❤️. If I ever post what I've done, I will let you know, since you ARE the cause! Thanks JeffTE 🐟❤️
Thats awesome! Good filtration doesn't have to cost a fortune, just some labor. Sounds like you have a handle on it now. Great job, enjoy all your new fry!
Hey Jeff...Awesome set up. Do you have a UV filter in line in your set up at all? I want to replace my "traditional" filter set up, but have an external pump which pumps at a high speed (probably about 4K by the time it would be at the filter), so trying to figure out how to slow down the flow enough to still use the 3 barrel set up you have (Which is exactly what I want) I'm thinking of putting the UV in front to help slow the flow, or perhaps splitting the in coming water between the barrel and the UV (and sending this portion back to the waterfall) so the barrels can work at the proper speed, because I know that is important. Any thoughts would be helpful.
I do have a UV but it is submerged in my skimmer. For your setup I would just branch off the pump and split between the barrels and a UV return as you suggested. You might also want to check the actual output of the pump once you get the barrels installed. the extra head height may slow down your flow to a useable rate.
finally, after a loong long time i subs, i got a great notification again from you. plz make a video update about your genius drum filter next. & thx for the update 👍
Hey Jeff could you please do a winterizing video when the time comes. I was wondering what to do with my one barrel static bed as I shut off my filter for the winter. Thanks
Hi Jeff, I just got a quick question. I am building your DIY barrel filter. Will 2-in PVC pipes be big enough if I'm running a 3,200 gallon pump?My concern is overflowing.
Just wondering…since I already have the hi blo aerator; I have a manifold attached to it so I can control the amount of air coming through the line. Do you think I can use that just for the aerator part of the retrofit drain system? I will use the TT3000 to pump pond water to the barrels. Any thoughts would really be appreciated. Thank you
Morning Jeff. Question. Would it be possible to run the 3 barrel filter setup you run without the bog filter you have? Looking to make the same set you have. But I dont have the space to make a big set up. What else would I need to do or add to get similar water quality you have??
Absolutely. The bog is separate from the barrel system and primarily there to handle nitrates. I've set up several ponds with just the barrel system with great results.
Ok thanks man. Out of alot of the videos I've seen on here your setup is the simplest and most cost effective set up. Keep up the good and informative videos. 👍
Hi Jeff! What equipment did you use th drill the stainless pan to attach the bulk head? Also, how is the aerator attached? Thanks for all your informational videos! Absolutely genius!!
I have a Danner air pump with two diffusers in the pond. One is a mátala disc and the other is one of those that looks like an octopus. Lots of air is pumped into the pond. If I figured out a way to attach one of these to the pond, attach the bulkhead to run pipe to a leaf basket and attach that to the submersible pump which would run to the barrel filtration would that create the sucking power to remove leaves and muck from the bottom? Not sure how to attach the mátala air disc and would appreciate any thoughts and suggestions you might have. I am definitely a novice and am pretty confused! Thanks for any tips!!
@@linda-bagobones75 air lift pumps can definitely move a lot of water but they require oversized piping and LOTS of air volume and are generally not efficient for a homeowner pond. A small submersible pump is the way to go.
The hi blow is used only to get more oxygen into the pond. There is a 3000 gph submersible pump in a skimmer basket that carries the water to the filters out to a waterfall and into the pond. My plan is to attach a leaf basket from the retro drain and to the pump for circulation
@@jeffakamax thank you for your quick response. I have a 3600GPH submersible pump and a 1.5 inch inlet/outlet leaf strainer. Unfortunately, both the pump and the strainer don't have the same size openings so I'm at a loss on how to connect them together. That's why I asked the sizes of your pump and strainer.
