i love the sound of mechanical hard drives in the morning ....

Back in 2002 in my senior year of high school we had a teacher that started a computer repair class. Our school had a storage room that was full of old early to mid 90's PCs that we parted out as part of the curriculum. When we were done we ended up with a bunch of parts; 3.5" & 5.25" floppy drives, cards, memory, PSU's etc. & a big box full of old Conner hard drives. There were probably 50 or more of them & I could have taken them all home with me at the end of the year, but I left them there.... doh! 😖

The arrival of “multimedia” in windows 3.1 & 95 (using sound cards with CD ROM interface) was a “thing”, back in the day.

I'm probably the only person who misses the days of parallel and serial ports being on everything that boots. I like USB for you can't beat jumpers and dip switches with DMA, IRQ and base address from the old ISA days!

I still have my serial mice 😜 Often the socket 7 MB got a PS/2 mouse header. And there are serial to ps/2 and serial to USB adapter available AFAIR. And there is a lack and therefore a high demand of AT PS and AT cases.
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 7 дней назад
PS/2 serial adapters are passive and PS/2 and serial are incompatible interfaces so the active circuitry has to be in the device being connected. Which is to say that just having the adapter and any random peripheral doesn't guarantee it's going to work. The mouse has to support being adaptable. Not all of them were. Not even most of them were. Only mice that came with adapters were in fact. So the whole PS/2 adapter thing is a bit of a pitfall.
@borlibaer
@borlibaer 7 дней назад
@@1pcfred yes, you are right. But I am talking about developments where a serial mouse is getting emulated/simulated to a serial port. I recently had seen a video about that. You see a couple of developments of skilled people designing contemporary electronics for substitution of old legacy hardware no longer available or repairable. But then you may consider to go for full emulation. So, I like and prefer repairing & refurbishing historical stuff as much as possibile.

PC chips motherboards were the cheapest motherboards you could buy in 1995 so no surprise there.
@nf5416
@nf5416 6 дней назад
remember the sold boards are charging as much again for shipping so really it cost twice the price stated ... A motherboard is light and shipping should be no more that 5 to 10 euros

The HDD is worth something while it works. But that won't be for long. So here's to hoping it survives the surface scan. Because it very well may not.

Nice blue machine. These were very common, socket A MB, known for bad caps. There were a large batch of MB with came with doggy caps in the early 2000s
@ItIsNot1984
@ItIsNot1984 6 дней назад
You should check the cpu on that first one. Some of those socket A cpu's can be worth a fair amount. You can't just search "athlon xp 2800+" though. You'll need a number off the chip to really see what it is. It'll be long and start with an A. I think these cpu's sometimes hold some value because the pins and the die are easily damaged. Coupled with amd not selling well at the time and you just have some models that are scarce. Also I noticed that these cpu's with higher clock multipliers carry a premium since you can put them in the earliest socket A boards, and they'll just work. I put an athlon that has a x15 multiplier in my old socket A that has an ISA slot on it and get 1.5ghz. The cpu is like 5 years newer than the board, and it just works. The motherboard has no idea what the cpu even is, but it works. The old days were great like that.

Although these Creative drivers are collectible, in my experience, the ones above 8x rarely work due to some mechanical problem.

The people offering the too expensive gigabyte boards probably just look at other socket a boards, but the actual value depend on the chipset and options like if it has sata and/or isa slots. The via boards were mostly budget boards. With socket a you want nvidia nforce2 ultra 400 chipset.

@@1pcfred These boards were nearly worth nothing only a few years back, specially with bad caps. I got a bunch of them and why pick the lesser ones if they were like $20 with cpu, cooler and ram?
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 6 дней назад
@@mealot7613 to me all old hardware is of little value. It's obsolete today. But I can see folks being nostalgic about older things. I get collecting. I like to reminisce myself. For me the past is gone though. Although I do have a slew of old PCs here. I've never thrown any of my old PCs out. I keep them in a trailer in the backyard. I have a few of the newer ones in the garage still. Going back to a Pentium 4. Which was really only 3 PCs ago for me. I don't get new PCs very often. I was thinking about upgrading recently but I'm not keen on what's available right now. I'm hoping that will improve someday. So I've decided to hold off for longer now. Unless my current PC dies. Which so far knock on wood it's still running OK. But it is pretty old now.

CT2959 is a Sound Blaster 16 Value Edition. The 2950 is the same PCB but the missing chip on yours is populated. This had Creative's own flavour of OPL3 called CQM embedded and has the DSP firmware with hanging note bug. Basically heavily cost reduced and shipped with a CD and some crapware games to help sell it. Pretty basic card with known issues which is why it's not worth much... only clueless suckers would buy this one ;-)

about the CD Rom i found one listing for 40 euro from Germany but no sold listings and it was a CR-581-M instead of CR-581-J no clue what the difference is

Can't say I'm really surprised that you didn't find any Creative CD drives. AFAIK they weren't actually made be Creative and, if memory serves, they appeared to be poor quality but priced comparatively high based on the name. Better technology very rapidly passed them by so it's likely that very few have survived.
@g4z-kb7ct
@g4z-kb7ct 5 дней назад
Creative drives are simply re-badged Panasonic CD drives. The quality of those drvies is fine, like any other CD drive of that era and has nothing to do with Creative marketing them as their own.... most Creative stuff is high quality. However, later drives were re-badged Lite-On drives, that could be where you saw low quality drives....

Maybe look for a serial to ps2 adapter online then you can use a PS2 mouse.
@j.f.christ8421
@j.f.christ8421 7 дней назад
Not all PS2 mice will work with the adapter, only older ones. They only made them for a few years and there really no way to tell if they support serial aside from plugging it in to check.
