For now, please enjoy the teardown and brief introduction to the Retro Lite CM4. The handheld took a while to build so I’m glad to finally be able to explain a little bit in detail regarding the first prototypes.

Wow! This came out immaculate! One thing I'd recommend (as a MacBook owner with black keys) is that if you decide to mass produce this you should try and get the all of the buttons to either be not black or have a more rough texture, as they currently look like absolute grease magnets, especially the triggers. Regarding the screws standing out I think you could get them to be a little more subtle if they were black in some way.

Can the Keyboard script work with any Retropie image or just with the this specific hardware configuration?

It uses serial communication with my specific controller (Atmega32u4). I don't see how it couldn't be used with any linux distro, as long as you install the correct dispmanx packages and such.

What kind of price range would the kit be in? Is it feasible for people to 3d-print parts/entire case to lower cost?

I don’t know yet really, but probably 300 dollars for everything including aluminum shells. The case doesn’t work for 3D printing because it’s thin, really needs to be metal

Thanks for you answer! Is it possible to design a slightly thicker case that can be 3dprinted? I don't mean to ask you to do it, but is it possible for anyone to do so? Or are there for example heat/cooling issues that prevent the usage of a plastic case?

No we didn’t, CM4 is still not available to buy

@@stonededge if it does suddenly become available, you reckon youll revisit the kit? shame for something like this to be mothballed. I didnt realise how powerful these little cm units are, beats a RPI Zero anyday of teh week. another thought would be a radxa x1 which is that little zero looking thing but can get it with 4-8 gig of ram and up to 128 gig of mmc storage.

@@3rutu5 I dont think so. I'm already working on a revision 2 which uses the Radxa CM5 (RK3588s). I hope to have that done by the end of the year in which case I would probably move on from CM4 and sell RK3588s kits.

Would it be possible to make a handheld using the CM4 without its IO board? Its much more powerful then the Pi Zero 2 W and the SBC itself still fits inside a GBA SP shell which is what I plan on using

What do you mean without an IO board? It doesn’t have any solder points so you need an IO board to interface with.

If it doesn't have solder points then you probably do need an IO board but maybe there is a smaller solution?

@@ykguy6379 Yes, you need to design something that breaks out the CM4’s IO to be useful in a handheld. For example, connecting the HDMI channels to a connector.
