Today's ride impression - a 1986 YZ 125 at Ward Creek MX in Raymond, WA. This bike is sort of a sleeper in vintage MX but is definitely worth a look as a reliable race weapon! Also, for a more detailed tech review, you can check out Pulp MX BP's Classic Steel's write up at: pulpmx.com/2014...

A masterpiece. Even more with Boyesen Reeds installed. I used to ride one. Good times 80´s. This piece was the bike of the Year back in 1986.

As much as the magazines loved the Honda that year, I think the YZ was faster and really not harder to ride. I’m convinced the 86 I had was every bit as fast as my current 89 YZ 125 for that matter. Really good bike!

I'm restoring an 81 and just came across a mint 86 so now I'm wanting to ad this to the yz collection

81 is a lot of fun too, punchy motor but the extra radiator weight on the front end feels a bit odd in the air. I think it makes it turn better though! Congrats on the 86, I feel like it was really underrated.

My son had an 86 for a couple of years. Super fun bike to ride and very reliable.

Looks like you were much faster and aggressive on the YZ versus the RM in the other video. I remember the '86 and '87 YZs having tons of mid-range torque, if memory serves.

Very cool to see these retro review videos, even better on some of the great Northwest tracks I used to race back in the mid 1980’s👍 My family owned a Kawasaki dealership in Warrenton, Oregon (Mr. Bike) from 1985 until around 1990-91 or so. I raced all over the northwest From 1985 to 1988, some really great times and some really great people. 👍👍 You don’t know an old timer MX racer named Mark Koontz do you? He was one of my best friends back in the day and still races Vet and vintage up there.

Mark do you know how many pounds of compression is good for this bike? Mine has 150lbs.

Honestly no idea. With the 2T I always put in a top end when I get one, so I don't even check the compression. Seems like 150-165 is what I see people mention.

good luck with that...5 years now been looking for mine...I even biught a new mikuni but it wont run with it at all...downdraught not side draught apparently, tho I think Suzuki rgv250 have same carbs

Same spring dimensions from 83-88 for all YZ big bikes, I just Ebayed a set off of a 250. The shock spring had already been upgraded before I bought the bike so I didnt have to buy that one.

I cross referenced them - same springs in most YZ big bikes from 83-88, and the same ones fit in the CRs of those years. So I ebayed a set in the right rate -- you can use the Race Tech spring calculator, look up other bikes, and then compare. It's sort of a pain but it's cheaper than paying full price for new ones.

Kawasaki and Honda had the best production bikes of 1985 so the new rule had no effect on their results in 1986 Honda dominated and Kawasaki were their only competition. The 1985 YZ 125 was a turd I have a mint 85 KX and RM and looking for a a CR but will pass on the YZ
