In my experience the F10 key is the key you need to hammer on these HP OEM boxes to enter the bios.

Those intel boards mosfets do run that hot even with a working board - ive got 3 of them and put heatsinks on them because they run so hot they discolor the board over time - but yeah ive got one which does the same as urs but stops at d3 and ive found a super hot northbridge once i removed the heatsink - so i think its a faulty NB - ill wait for your bios flash as was thinking that was worth ago until i checked the NB temp

Richard, I don't know if anyone else mentioned this but with HP desktops you have to remove the power cable from the PS when you clear CMOS
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair День назад
Oh Ididn't do that. I switched the power off at extension cable. That probably does the same thing?

You might have more luck searching for HP 290 G2 although most seem to have the i5 8500 rather than the 8400 in your example.

i5 for $20. Good deal!

At this point, the only change was ram slot and that resolved C7. I'd say, you have a faulty slot and a faulty ram, and you've been mixing them back and forth.
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair День назад
Well there are four slots and I tried plenty of Dimms in various places/combinations so I honestly think that is not the problem. What you may not see due to the video edit is how many different Dimms I tried
@BkR090
@BkR090 День назад
@@LearnElectronicsRepair I believe the 3rd one works, try different rams in it and see if you go beyond the C7 fault. But this thing has so many faults It's disheartening to work on.

@@LearnElectronicsRepair I'm sorry for not including what "this point" is. It's at 18:20.

I wouldn't say faulty RAM. Intel motherboards have a very tightly controlled QVL for memory. I know Micron works well and Samsung. Hynix is a mixed bag. But if the modules are PC-2100 (266 MHz), it won't POST.

Thanks Richard, Im interested in this analyzer card you have, how do they work and is there a list of error codes available. Thanks

Your comments while looking at the HP reminds me of an old saying..... "Ya pays yer money ya takes yer chances"

Yep you do. I don't think I lost on this one, due to paying the right price, but it is nothing particularly special either

hello richard, did you try to re seat the cpu? also check the cpu for its flatness, some intels get bend over tme inside the socket, due to uneven pressure at the sides. so the pins on the socket loose contact.
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair День назад
I swappped it for a known good one and mentioned this in the video, made no difference

Change the wobbly cap. Seen it recently on another channel that the cap was broken inside, and that stopped the MB booting.

Could be, or possibly increased ESR. Excessive ripple could make a chip run hot and seem to fail. It's an observed fault and an easy fix so I see no reason not to change it.

8th gen I5 has gone down the drain since they are not supported by windows 11. I get 8th gen I5 laptops with ram, a screen, and storage for less than 50quid. Ok the desktop chips are better but they are cheap on ebay. Why do i buy old Intel laptops that wont run win 11? because they are no worse than many of the modern cpu's if you put Linux on them.
@chrishartley1210
@chrishartley1210 День назад
I don't know why you think the 8th gen cannot support windows 11, they are certainly on Microsoft's list of compatible processors.
@rossbittner6831
@rossbittner6831 9 часов назад
8th gen is on the support list. My laptop's 7th gen i5 is not, nor is my family member's i7-7700 desktop. 7th gen appears to be the cutoff for now.
