Review of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid on Rev Nation
By Rev Nation
In the world of hybrid vehicles, the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid has carved a niche for itself, aiming to deliver commendable fuel efficiency and reduced emissions without compromising on performance or utility. As one of the early players in the hybrid SUV scene, the Escape Hybrid, following in the footsteps of Toyota and Honda, stands out with its unique blend of gasoline and electric power.
The 2008 model brings noteworthy enhancements, building on a gasoline/electric hybrid system reminiscent of Toyota's approach. The performance and efficiency upgrades contribute to a smoother and quieter ride, complementing the Escape's bold body restyling that mirrors a downsized Explorer.
Urban and suburban driving showcase the Escape Hybrid's prowess, exceeding EPA estimates with a solid 35-36 miles per gallon. Although highway driving sees a dip in mileage due to the boxy aerodynamics, the overall average of 32 mpg remains commendable for a well-equipped SUV that balances performance and affordability.

Overall Length: 174.7 inches.

Improved fuel economy
Striking new styling

Boxy aerodynamics affecting highway mileage

Base Price: $26,075
Price as Tested: $30,165
Options Include:
Moonroof and satellite radio, $995.
Chrome package, $195.
Shipping, $665.
The Lowdown:
Performance: Seamless transition between gas engine and electric motor, imperceptible except for a few unique sounds.
Drivability: Slightly heavier feel but handles and accelerates well, with electric power steering standing out.
Styling: Masculine appearance with a distinctive chrome grille; however, boxy styling affects highway gas mileage.
Interior: Rich and sturdy design with an intuitive combination video screen for navigation, audio, and hybrid-system monitoring.
Negatives: Lack of grab handles in the ceiling for passengers.
Bottom Line:
The 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid earns its stripes as a likable and competent hybrid SUV, offering a balance of performance and affordability that appeals to the budget-conscious yet environmentally conscious driver.
