Back in the day the 450 was the camera to own to shoot weddings. What a flashback! 😊

@@RetroRepairGuy back in the day, the early to mid 1980s, I would shoot over a 100 weddings with mine. The quality was great for its time. Later I bought a 3-chip camera and DVCam tapes were all the rage. Eventually digital SLR cameras took over and I retired after 40 long years in the industry.

I had two VHS camcorders (Hitachi VM-600E and a Panasonic something-or-other) which packed up a few years ago, I tried almost every camera repair/antique repair/etc place in my country, they all turned me down, I wish I could have saved them... Thank you so much! For your camera, if it's dead it's probably the power supply but as you saw in the video it's easy to access. For a cleaning you can simply remove the eject door and have access; it's only two screws.

We used to use those in High School when I was a kid. I think you meant Betacam as well? I don't believe there was ever more than one Beta-Max camcorder. A local TV news station was using high-8 - which is about the same quality as SVHS - the things that don't make this "professional" is its missing manual white balance and interchangeable lenses - plus most pro cameras were 3x ccd.
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy Год назад
Hi Michael! Yes Betacam would have been the correct word to use for the professional cameras used in studios. I said "High end Betamax" cause I believe Betamax is a more commonly known term for home users because of the Betamax VCRs. There was a few Betamax camcorders but they were the two piece models, the camera plugged into a Betamax VCR, however other than Sony I don't know. Also you are correct it's missing the manual white balance and hence the term "prosumer" which is what I used. Prosumer cameras, still today, lack some features of the true professional models while delivering higher quality/standard for the semi-professionals. Which is what I said, wedding videographers, small PBS stations with limited budgets, etc. Thanks for watching!

nice profesinal repair, actually did these unit suffer from leaky caps ?
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy Месяц назад
Most electrolytic caps have a 15-20 year life span in general and this can vary because of manufacturing, use, heat, etc. I changed the caps in the power supply because this is crucial. However, even though it is working great, it could have benefitted having new caps in the camera as well. Most time the power supply fails and causes damage. If a cap in the unit fails you will see lines in image or problems in sound, etc. But it won't damage the unit. I did not see any leaked caps anywhere but the ones in power supply had high ESR (resistance). Thanks for watching!

@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 года назад
Hard to diagnose without seeing it but it sounds like it's going into a "protection mode". It's not the battery when you have the power supply connected. It could be a bunch of stuff however I would start with cleaning the heads and sensors and oiling gears. Take off the hood and watch the tape loading and turning see if it slips or having trouble turning. Once all that is done if it's still happening then it might be old caps. When you open see if any leaked or busted.

@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 года назад
Hi Robbie. Thank you! Are you getting power at all like is the eject and play mechanism working? When you say you hooked it up to the PC did you try just the simple video out to a TV without any adapters or anything? Also even if you can't see the picture can you try recording something and playback the cassette on another VCR to see if it recorded something (assuming there is power). You just want to first eliminate the fact that it's not just the viewfinder. If it's the whole camera I would start with the power supply before I crack open the camera making sure you are getting the proper voltage out which should be 12V. Afterwards it could be a bunch of stuff like if the camera was ever dropped there could be a crack on the board or cracked solder. Best to try to get the schematic for this unit and follow the power from where it plugs in and see where it's cutting. Sorry there is no easy way to diagnose without seeing the unit. However try to eliminate everything you can. Let me know if you have any more questions afterwards. Thanks for watching.

@@RetroRepairGuy Thanks for the advice! I got it working now but its only showing Black and White footage. I have it set up to my PC through a Video Capture USB card running through OBS. Theres a bunch faults with the picture outside of the black and white picture. Outside of taking this thing apart, would you recommend using a head cleaning tape?
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 года назад
@@RobbieMaynardCreates Hi again. Well now I'm curious as to what you did to get it working? Couple of things. First the black and white footage could be an IC, however, there again, the IC might not be getting proper voltage from a burnt capacitor or resistor or there's a broken trace. Could also just be a bad cable. As for OBS, I plugged the camera from the show to my computer the exact same way and I remember having a few issues and that could be the capture device. Did you try as I said (just to eliminate this as a problem) plugging the camera directly to an old monitor with a video input, no other device? How about the recording test, is it also black and white or only display? As for cleaning, I always believed those "cleaning tapes" to be somewhat of a scam. You can take off the door of the eject mechanism and get much easier access. Get those long swabs and alcohol and get in there and remove dirt. In this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EQNuugQ-qss.html at 20:21 I explain in better details how to clean the heads and transport of a VCR. You might want to check that out. Remember these things are old, caps dry out and they need a good overhaul. Maybe you could find someone locally to at least clean it and take a look? They can't charge you much more than fifty bucks for a cleaning and a quick look over.
@RobbieMaynardCreates
@RobbieMaynardCreates 2 года назад
@@RetroRepairGuy I appreciate the help! I haven't tried plugging directly into a monitor yet. Though, even after recording onto a blank tape, the playback is black and white too. Im hoping its not a dead capacitor - Im not outside of opening the camera up and going through some of the basic stuff but any sort of technical stuff is out of my league. I will have to reach out and see if anyone local can help look at it more thoroughly. As far as getting it working again, I found a lot of the debris from the microphone cover in the camera and some corrosion in a secondary battery source. It held 3 LR44 batteries - I dont have an owners manual so Im not sure what those batteries are for but once I cleaned it up and used an other models viewfinder, it was working again. Maybe the other brands VF is the reason for the black and white picture but I can't imagine that would be the cause.
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 года назад
@@RobbieMaynardCreates No problem, just difficult without the unit in front of me. So if you are recording the same way on a tape, there's a problem in the camera. No the viewfinder is not the problem since it's happening on the recording. If you have the exact same model AG-450 the batteries are LR1130 according to the owner's manual. I show this at 13:36 in the video. I purchased them from Amazon in Canada but here are the batteries on Amazon US amzn.to/3aq7Ykp. @RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 года назад
Hi! Mechanically what about the pinch roller? Did you clean that thoroughly as well? Even if the belt looks tight to the finger did you check if it is slipping? Otherwise the problem could be electronic and hard to diagnose without seeing it. Let me know I’ll think on it as I am filming at the moment. Thanks for watching.

@@RetroRepairGuy I cleaned the roller and the capstan. The idler wheel also moves easily enough and rewind and FF function normally as well. The brake pads free up on the take up and supply spindles as well. Should I add grease to the worm wheel?
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 года назад
@@babulsgg Grease helps with the loading and ejecting but once the mechanism is engaged but worth doing anyways. I think it comes from sensors that would detect something is wrong and shut it down. If you confirm that the belt is not slipping even if tight then does the mechanism lock properly in place? Are the springs on the gears ok? May sound ridiculous but did you try another VHS tape? If it's broken or have resistance it might also cause the unit to stop. Haven't worked on it for some time but I believe the counter was digital? Do you see the counter advancing without problems? If the unit is having trouble reading the tape or the counter stops advancing it might think there is a problem and stop the playback. After that you're looking at voltage problems. Do you have the service manual? I looked and don't have it because I did not need it otherwise I would send it to you. Unfortunately I can't find it anywhere free on Internet. I do see it available here www.servicemanuals.net/en/PANASONIC-AG450-Service-Manual I am not affiliated with this company but I have purchased twice from them successfully.
@babulsgg
@babulsgg 2 года назад
Thanks for answering! I've tried multiple tapes, all FF and rewound with the same problem. Its as if the tape gets stuck in one place, stays there and then retracts the tape. I can forward cue past the stuck section and then it goes for a while. Yes, the counter is digital and only seen in the viewfinder. If it was a power supply problem, then other functions would also not work. The manual suggests oiling the tape spindles, but they move freely.
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 года назад
@@babulsgg Hi again. When I say voltage problems I don't mean just power supply and why the service manual is necessary. Different sections of the circuit could be having problems like a bad chip or chip getting a bad voltage input, etc. The sensors are controlled electronically. I say this if all mechanical problems that are normally the culprit have been eliminated, which seems to be the case from what you are telling me but of course hard to diagnose without having the unit in front of me. Let's not forget that this unit is now thirty years old so the capacitors are passed their expected life span which could lead to voltage problems, spikes and so on.

I want to use my camcorder at longer periods of time but the battery life doesn't last more than 2 hours or less. So I had a creative idea to go battery-less with this mobile power supply with outlets and I can plug the camcorder in it, tape it to the camcorder and go anywhere with 8 hours or more. The only thing is the ac adapter is too bulky and the wires are annoyingly long. Is it possible there is a small ac adapter with the same volts, hz and watts that can keep the camcorder powered on?

Hi Nayan. First of all it's important to understand that a camera like this is just a VCR with a lens. When VCRs shut off it's because they detect something wrong; a protection mechanism. When you opened it and replaced the belt, if you did not align the position sensor or disrupted it, then it would cause the unit to shut off. Of course, there could also be a voltage problem but you would need to diagnose. I would start by making sure the mechanism is not blocked and verify the position sensor (you might need the service manual) and go from there. Thanks for watching.

Do you think its possible to put a hd digital sensor in one of these?

Hi Paul. Could you elaborate? Do you mean for recording in HD?
@paullewis9473
@paullewis9473 2 года назад
@@RetroRepairGuy yes either to memory card or direct to pc via lead. I don't really know anything about optics but I'm assuming the lens is better than say a gopro or a cheap hd camcorder?
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 года назад
@@paullewis9473 The lens is not bad but I don't remember what brand it is but it's a 8-80mm TV Zoom Lens. The CCD is 1/2 inch and capable of 400 lines of resolution so you can't get HD from it, however you can easily record directly to a computer or laptop using a USB capture card like this one which is very cheap ($19) and has a S-VHS input so you'll get the 400 lines. Here's an affiliate link it doesn't cost you anything and there's even an extra 5% off amzn.to/3qlJv4e You could then upscale the footage to HD using different methods or very simply in Adobe Premiere. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

hi, i have a camera very similar to yours. the problem is that it plays the tapes but when I switch to record mode immediately on the CRT screen there are numerous noise stripes. looking at the recording on a VCR you notice that the audio and video are distorted. do you have any advice? I thought about replacing the capacitors around the recording head. thank you from Italy
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 года назад
Hi. Part of my family is from Italy! This is seen in the monitor as soon as you hit the record button on the VHS camera? Just to rule out interference, you are using 75 ohm cables? And try another monitor. After that is ruled out the camera's could definitely be bad caps. The best is to look at the service manual and follow the signal path and start with those. Could also be a solder joint that is broken or cracked if the camera was ever dropped during its life time. You can do a Google search for the manual, normally these old service manual are available in PDF somewhere. That's about as good a diagnosis I can give without seeing the unit so hope it helps. Thanks for watching!

@@RetroRepairGuy thank you very much, I will try to check the welds and in case to replace the capacitors, even if the identification of the components is very complicated. however I have seen several videos of your channel, you are really very good at explanations and video editing
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 года назад
@@comicsmovie6803 Thank you very much for the compliments. When you say the identification of the components is complicated. Is it because you don't see them properly on the board or you find it difficult? In this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Hf8DBlH95nE.html at 10:54 I explain about the identification. Also you can then order and get more information from Digi-Key and they have an Italian website www.digikey.it/. I am not affiliated with them, I have ordered many times from them and they have great service and quality components. Let me know if you need any help identifying any components. Also as I mentioned, try to Google for the service manual as it will often provide a detailed list of the components, their value and voltage.

@@RetroRepairGuy thanks, however I mean that it is difficult to find (for me) the corresponding voltages of some components and in case of valid substitutes (not considering that sometimes here in Italy they have exaggerated prices)
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 года назад
@@comicsmovie6803 Oh OK, I understand. But remember that voltages do not need to be the same. Only the microfarad. You can go above as high as you want as long as it physically fits. As for prices, did you check out Digi-key? So far their prices are great and they ship internationally.

The Reporter Camera that I refurbished in the episode I got for really cheap on eBay (less than hundred with shipping) I was really lucky. As for what I use to film the show; I mostly use a Nikon D3200 but with a modified firmware to increase the recording quality.

What is alternative of rubber renue here in india cant find if shipping from us its very costly hope u advice best i want clean my Panasonic vhs Camcorder
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 года назад
Hi. Rubber Renue cleans and has a chemical that helps rejuvenate the rubber. However, it is perfectly safe to use the same alcohol for the heads to clean the rubber surface. The only problem is if the rubber is very old and hard the Rubber Renue makes it "gummy" again. However if the rubber is too old no chemicals will help it and will need to be replaced.

@@vintagelover3873 Thank you again for kind words. No this is what I am saying, just use the alcohol it's the next best thing. I don't know of other products and automotive products that rejuvenate rubber is not the same as it leaves a residue and rather conditions the surfaces and adds protection.

hi i have a JVC GR-C1E how much do you think it would cost to restore it ?
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy Год назад
Hi Simon. OK first of all I'm extremely jealous! Anyway, very hard to estimate but does it work or have any problems? If there is troubleshooting the price would go up. I'll give you a large ballpark figure. The guys I know work at an average $35-$45 per hour. If you take an example of the one I just restored in this video, the power supply caps that were not standard value, belt, shipping etc. roughly $40 in parts. I did not recap the interior of the camera on this one and it was displaying an image and still put in 6-8 hours. So that would come out to $250-$350 (Canadian Dollars $180-$250 USD). And again, no troubleshooting, just cleaning, recapped power supply and belt(s) replaced. That's why it's not always worth it for older component unless you are doing it yourself or in the case of something you want to keep, like a BTTF camera! Thanks for watching!
