Unboxing and setting up the Moviestuff Retro Universal 2K film scanner. A revolutionary modular design that yields frame by frame 2K quality at high speed scanning (15fps).
You can set auto exposure, an off-set to auto or manual. Some of the old cams would "double expose" adjacent frames, causing a flicker, but easy to edit out. The 2k cam does a great job- I capture to have room all around to compensate for stabilization in post without losing image content. Neat used at the end of editing- fantastic.
I’ve had to call for various reasons- the owner, Roger answers or will call back even after hours!- I’ve purchased from him for many years- he is the best.
My 2nd grade teacher had written at the top of her chalkboard, "there are no stupid questions," so here goes... I have one of the early Cinemates. An early selling feature of the Moviestuff machines, was that the entire film image, even data between the sprocket holes and far off the side of the gate was revealed and could be captured. I notice that in your demo, the picture is narrowly cropped to 4:3. Is it still possible with these new machines to capture the "entire" film surface, including the image between the holes?
Correlation of quality of the transfer is not tied solely to pixel number. One of the crucial factors is luminance range, or contrast. Films contrast has always been difficult to attain when transferring. To overcome, a larger sensor (with larger pixels) is needed. Like 1M 1" diameter pails won't capture as much as 1M 6" diameter pails- it's about photons. I believe the sensor is 1.25 which is very large, hence keeps the contrast high and noise low. I also stabilize and then use Neat to clean up the grain.
Is it possible to lock the auto iris so no flash frames occur? The first few frames of new scenes have brighter images while the exposure adjusts. If one setting is locked in that can be eliminated. Also, films could be scanned at darker and lighter settings to get better results on overexposed and underexposed films. Dynamic range could be extended? Thanks for the review. It is just what I wanted to see.
Sorry for the delay in response-extreme personal issues-- The exposure can be locked- but amateur films exposures are all over the place- you may find the lockdown becomes counter productive. Easier to simply go back in editing and eliminate any frames you don't want for cleaner scene transitions.
Thanks for posting Ed Very useful - One thing I notice that the unit has two operating speeds - Have you tried both and is there any advantage running at the slower speed or is this purely to help PC's that would struggle with the faster speed?
Some may need the slower speed for their hard drives to keep up- especially if you are trying to capture the images at 2K- using .tiff images. That is why SSD's are well suited- or raid systems.
Hi, thinking about purchasing one of these to replace my Sniper HD. Slightly concerend about the camera cardboard shim problem. Is there a fix from moviestuff?
Unfortunately, no- however, since, I decided to place the shim at the lower part of the vertical shaft that is fastened against the base- totally hidden, and allows perfect axis alignment. I wouldn't consider this a big issue, I'm sensitive to seeing the focus is perfectly constant across the frame, and doesn't fall off at an edge. This little quirk can be overlooked- it is a nice piece of equipment.
Hi you need a two outputs video card or two video cards installed. Then you must to configure in Screen Configuration from Windows two screens. And thats all.Your screen will be double size and when you move your mouse can move anithinn between both monitors.Bye!
@@GabrielLago1 hi thank you for your reply. the problem is that on the new version of the software, there is no preview. Instead, I have map pixels, so even with the system of two screens, I can display the image in large on the second. I hope I have been understood. Good night
Is 2K equal to 4 megapixel, and 4K equal to 8 megapixel (quality) DSLR camera? Also, why do they run them so fast when converting? Cameras have less noise, better photo with lower ISO setting, when operated slower.
Noise is not due directly to speed, nor just the pixel size- if you have larger pixels, akin to larger buckets to catch rain (photons), more rain (light=image) you will accumulate over the same amount of time, hence, less noise, more image. This unit has a large sensor to accommodate the large pixels and the number necessary to create the 2K image and still run the film at a respectable speed.
Hello Ed Deet I also have ghost images, can you tell me the version of your EDUIS software. Also, my retroscan software does not have the trueview function, so I cannot display large on a second screen, as I saw you do. I need your help, to better focus before capturing. If you could pass me the software with trueview that would be better. thank you in advance
The “ghosting” was not a function of focusing, but of the “frame blending”- in Edius, go to “speed”- “field options”- then check “use nearest neighbor”- that will eliminate the interlace frame. The retro scan original software of truview was never very helpful- all you can do is use a larger monitor and get very close- my biggest problem has always been getting a uniform focus across the frame. Hope this helps.
iris peris ---I do have a couple, but haven't thought of putting them up- also have the Moviestuff Cinemate 20- just didn't get around to putting it up for sale- I don't have any films to sell.
Hi Brillant coverage! I started to save old films and I mainly have 16mm Reversal prints color and B&W along with standard 16mm and Super16mm color neg and reversal. Prints and Originals. I also have 35mm. B&W and Color Neg and positive. Filmrescue is established to save movies from the tip right now. I worked out that our goverment for me to see my films saved would be 120 years before they could be scanned because of the back log. Im 75 now so I must start to save films of my own records of about 4 million feet and for other camemen like me. I was to buy a used Rank Cintel from California but discovered there is only one guy that could fix them so it was uneconomical to use the Rank Cintel even if it was free. My main concern before I buy a machine from Rodger is how does it handle Eastaman Color Neg Super 16mm and Reversal color original Film? Have you tried using it for 16mm at 2k?
There is an add-on unit for sound- really can’t tell you much about it- I personally run the sound film through a projector (if magnetic)- or use the optical scan program (free ware) which works super.- then sync everything in post.
Here’s a link to a sample- I’ve run it through some processes- stabilize- color- grain reduction, etc- but without a good scan to begin, you can’t achieve great results. Hope this helps- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5QdAjT-wxXg.html
Thanks for the kind remarks- greatly appreciated-- just posted a follow up hopefully our will enjoy even more-- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M8vuRZ-_bYU.html
This is real true film scanner 5 stars , not china toy Wolverine for 300 and400 dollars made from plastic as one time trash - toy garbage , that robs honest consumers. Shame, shame, shame!!!
Wolverine would not be so bad if it was sharper, 2x the sharpness would be good. They don't hold up too long, but for the $, if they held up for 25 to 30 reels and were sharper they would be a viable option. Here is one I scanned on a Wolverine. (It broke and ate up film at about 20 reels.) nsfw vimeo.com/252008257 I've got about half a million feet of fantastic underground films to scan. Too bad Epson does not make a 4k - 16mm sound scanner for 3999.00
For the price, the Wolverine does a decent job. It;s wrong to try to compare it to this unit. You do need to take the file created by the Wolverine and recompress it. The easiest way is to upload to RU-vid, which does a recompression.
@@vdopath What do you expect at a $375 range? Do you think everybody has $6.5k to spend on this...? I think at 375, the quality offered by Wolverine is quite good for an amateur use.
@@jma6412 I AGREE. I JUST PURCHASED A WOLVERINE. IT WORKS MUCH BETTER THAN THE OLD BOX AND MIRROR SETUP. IS THERE ENOUGH MARKET OUT THERE TO PAY FOR THE RETRO? I'M THINKING ON IT, BUT IT WOULD HAVE TO BE WORTHY OF PRICE AND MAKE A PROFIT. YOUR OPINION ED?
