Retroactive Changes to Highland Wear?

We were asked: “Has there been anything in Highland Dress that has been retroactively changed because of historical finds?”
Very interesting question! To put it another way - has any part of kilt fashion been discarded after having been in use for a considerable period of time?
Historical and archaeological study of Scotland and the other gallic nations never stops. It stands to reason that we know more now than we did twenty, thirty or one hundred years ago. The kilt as national dress has certainly been modified over the years, and accessories have come in and out of fashion. However our basic feeling is that the core of Highland Dress has not changed all that much. The lads elaborate in this video clip.
BTW the definition of retcon is….”Retroactive continuity, or retcon for short, is a literary device in which established diegetic facts in the plot of a fictional work are adjusted, ignored, or contradicted by a subsequently published work which breaks continuity with the former.”

Not sure if this is relevant but when I was a boy in Scotland I remember there still being a "Highlanders wear kilts, Lowlanders wear trews" thing. I think it was a hangover from the army but it's basically gone now. Everyone wears kilts, especially younger people, even at weddings in places like Orkney and Shetland where it was pretty much a local-pride thing to not wear a kilt just 20 years ago

I love my pith helmet. Have thrown it on my head while in my kilt before, but only in the house for fun. Never thought to go anywhere with it on

Plaid broaches were not traditional. The evidence we have is that twine was most commonly used. Broaches were most likely a victorian romanticism

Many's the time on a hot afternoon in August at a Highland Games in the Southwest, I have longed for a pith helmet.

+USAKiltsOfficial *The Prince Carlie is incorrect for re-enactments of dinner-dress scenes prior to the Napoleonic Wars.* I get how fabric mills provided for a Weathered subgenre o' the Tartan in the mid-20th Century.

If the pin is a sword should it point down or point up?

It's really up to you and how you want to wear it, but typically they're worn with the point facing down. Think of it as you wearing the sword as opposed to holding the sword.
