We were asked: “Has there been anything in Highland Dress that has been retroactively changed because of historical finds?”
Very interesting question! To put it another way - has any part of kilt fashion been discarded after having been in use for a considerable period of time?
Historical and archaeological study of Scotland and the other gallic nations never stops. It stands to reason that we know more now than we did twenty, thirty or one hundred years ago. The kilt as national dress has certainly been modified over the years, and accessories have come in and out of fashion. However our basic feeling is that the core of Highland Dress has not changed all that much. The lads elaborate in this video clip.
BTW the definition of retcon is….”Retroactive continuity, or retcon for short, is a literary device in which established diegetic facts in the plot of a fictional work are adjusted, ignored, or contradicted by a subsequently published work which breaks continuity with the former.”
