Retrospec Harper Single Speed Bike Unboxing & First Impressions

This is a difficult time for a lot of different reasons, but if you happen to be looking for a new bike, between tariffs and the pandemic, bicycle inventory is low and demand is at an all-time high. After having two bikes stolen from me back in July, I've been on the lookout for some replacements that will do the job at a reasonable price. Just when I was ready to give up, and wait it out, a Pre-Black Friday email hits my inbox from Retrospec, announcing a price drop on one of their entry-level fixie city bike the Harper with coaster brake. With the bike theft still fresh in my mind, the thought of spending $400 on a bike that might get stolen again, coupled with the incredibly unbelievable low price of $176, I decided to give it a shot and see what kind of bike you get at that price. In this video, I unbox my matte gray and orange single speed, assemble it and take it for a short ride and give you my first impressions. In future videos, I plan to perform some gravel bike upgrades.

Mine came in this afternoon and my order was placed late last week. Set up was straightforward and all the necessary tools were included in the box. It feels solid enough, but I'm positive that I'll be upgrading the pedals, chain, and crank later on down the road. The tires and grips seem decent enough, but those will be getting upgraded as well. All-in-all, the bike is fine for $219.99, so just keep that in mind when setting your expectations. This bike is like a modern-day Toys R Us bike versus a Walmart/Target bike, if that helps 😀.
@jyoungspins2200

I think the bike is pretty solid for the price. I’ve put tons of miles on it.... and never had an issue until recently when the chain kept locking on me and would come off... but that’s after nearly three years of riding without having an annual tune up.

One of the only people on the internet making content on this bike! Great stuff! Curious as to the sizing of these bikes... I've seen mixed answers. Some saying they run big, others recommend to get the next size up. Does Retrospec's inseam sizing chart seem to be worth using as a guideline? I'm close to 6'3" with a 34" inseam, and I'm thinking the xl might be a little big (getting the single speed w/o coaster brake)...
@DIWHYDOTLIFE
@DIWHYDOTLIFE 3 года назад
The height of the bike is good, but my issue was the length, my knees felt like they were too close to the handlebars. I’m 6’ and got a L, the bike fit when I added a lay back seat post. If I were you I’d go with the XL as you can drop the seat if it feels too tall.

@@KiingWaqas the Mantra looks to be very similar to the Harper with the exception of upgraded brakes, seat, grips. The frame and tires look to be the same, and it’s a single speed so I wouldn’t consider it trail ready out of the box. I plan to do some upgrades to mine in hopes of riding off road and I’ll be posting videos showing the progress shortly. Greasing the seatpost and stem isnt silly, its absolutely necessary... otherwise in a year when you want to adjust of remove them, they'll be frozen solid... Another observation, you didn't check if the wheels are true, and you didn't check the hubs, headset, and bottom bracket... pre built wheels are pretty good these days, so likely they were true... BB is likely a cartridge, so in that case it should be OK... however at that price, most likely these are loose ball hubs, and they always come way over tightened, and need to be adjusted, otherwise you'll quickly ruin them... you need a set of cone wrenches for that... Same for the headset, the odds it willl be properly adjusted out of the box are pretty low... you need a headset spanner tool and a big crescent wrench for that...

This video was very helpful, but I’d like to offer an unsolicited bit of advice: The music was very distracting and loud compared to the volume of your voice. If you’re going to play music in the video, it would be helpful to viewers to make the volume VERY low or to not overlay the music over when you’re talking. Obviously you can run your channel the way you want, but since this is a public channel and the comments are open, I’m assuming you’re wanting to create videos that are helpful and interest others and want other people to leave comments, so just my bit of advice. Toning down the music while you’re talking or turning it off completely while you’re talking and overlaying it on parts of the video where you aren’t talking might be best!

@DIWHYDOTLIFE
@DIWHYDOTLIFE 3 года назад
5’8” is right on the edge between M and L. The bike is plenty tall but a touch short lengthwise. If you went L you’d have to drop the seat way down and you may feel like your riding a little high. On the other hand you could get a M and the height would be perfect, but you may feel a bit close to the handlebars. I say get a M and you can always add a lay back seat post if you need to extend your reach a bit.

For the price, I don’t think it can be beat. If you’ve ever climbed a hill in high gear you’ll quickly learn to just stand up and let your body weight do the work. I actually prefer climbing in higher gears vs spinning it out in lower ones. That said, I am considering adding a 3-speed hub so I can take the bike off road, if I do that, I’m gonna make a video out of it and I’ll send it to you.

@DIWHYDOTLIFE 3 года назад
I actually just purchased a Shimano Nexus 3-speed hub for this bike. I'm going to do a video in a week or two on installing it so we'll see how it goes. My goal is to convert this bike into a gravel bike that I can take on one of the many canyon trails in and around San Diego, nothing to aggressive. If the 3-speed install goes well and I like the gear ratios, then I'm going to put new tires, handlebars and pedals on this bike as well. The bike is definitely manufactured in China, and if I had to guess, it's probably being sold as several different brands both in the States and other countries, so I wouldn't get too hung up on ordering from Retrospec as there is likely a bike company in your country offering similar if not the same bike just under a different brand.
@sagarchokkakula

@@DIWHYDOTLIFE That seems like a good plan! Well sadly, I stay in Oman, and the stuff you get here is prehistoric. Either I need to pick a regular single/multi-speed and covert it to a coaster brake with 3-speed hub or ship something. @DIWHYDOTLIFE
@DIWHYDOTLIFE Год назад
FreeFifty is always a good price! Luckily most after market parts like racks, fenders, etc. are universal in design and can be made to work with almost any bike. That said sometimes it is a bit hit and miss ordering parts. Something’s just won’t work, that’s where product reviews can help you reveal a products success rate. A low rating can often say a lot about compatibility. Worst case you can usually return it, although some items are too inexpensive to even bother with, you’ll definitely want to return something pricy that you couldn’t get working. Best of luck and let me know how your upgrades go!

As long as there aren’t any big hills, the Harper is a great option. The single speed keeps the price down and there’s a lot less ‘stuff’ that can break, so they’re very popular around campuses. If you do end up going with the Harper, I would very much appreciate it if you could use the link in the description? This will let Retrospec know you watched my video and give me more credibility as a content creator. Thank you and best of luck!

I would get a L, bikes are like shoes, you can only put up with the ones that are a little too big.

you can do without the selfie stick while riding. Have someone film you while riding and add you voice later.

Safe recommendation. I did almost eat it a couple times. I now have a 360 cam so shooting selfie stuff just got immensely easier.

How is the bike holding up?
@DIWHYDOTLIFE
@DIWHYDOTLIFE 2 года назад
Unfortunately I’ve been riding on-road much more than I’d like so the knobby Continental tires are wearing faster than expected. Also, adding the front rim break was a big improvement, just having that coaster break was holding my riding back. Check out the live video I did of the break install. No complaints otherwise.

It’s a good looking road bike, especially the oat color. Unfortunately it appears they only have the 45cm XS size available so we may be too late. Retrospec might be discontinuing it. Unless you’re looking at a used one, in that case I would say it’s probably a good road bike for a beginner/intermediate, that’s kinda Retrospec’s sweet spot. Affordable and surprisingly good. I’d love to ride one if you happen to know where a size 57cm L can be found let me know.

don't buy from them they have horrible customer service. they never respond to you. I bought a bike from them and decided to cancel 15 minutes after i realized that a bought this brakeless bike. 3 days later the bike was in my front door. now i had to go all through the work and return this.
@DIWHYDOTLIFE
@DIWHYDOTLIFE 3 года назад
It sounds like you placed the order a bit hastily. To be honest, I made the same mistake. That said, you can’t make a bike without brakes, that’s a death trap. It likely is the coaster brake model which I’m learning to live with. Hopefully their service department will do the right thing and work with you to get it returned. Let me know how that goes, I don’t want to promote a company that won’t take care of an honest mistake. Thanks for the comment.

Hard to say exactly without a speedometer but I would say 20 miles per hour is pretty achievable. Add a hub gear (my other video) and you can go 5-10 mph faster.
