One of my favourite days since starting the channel, playing through with my daughter in one EPIC session together was so very very cool. We both hope you enjoy it! Mark
Hi Mark - did you play on the easy or hard mode with your daughter? Im thinking about playing through with my 10yr old and tossing up between the two...
Holy moly! That review score! 😲 Im not a fan of this type of game, but when people talk about it lovingly and rate it so highly, even someone like me becomes interested and wants to try playing it. Thanks for the review! 😊
Monkey Island 1 & 2 were among my favourite games as a young teenager, and I am so glad this new installment lives up to the hype! I wasn't sure about the chosen art style at first too, but it's really growing on me now. This one will jump the backlog queue for sure!
Monkey island is an absolute pivotal moment for me getting into gaming. There were other games I played, back in the 90’s on my Amiga 1200 before the PlayStation and n64 were a twinkle on the horizon, but playing monkey island 1 and 2 (well, watching my mum play it and me trying to help) is really the moment that got me hooked on gaming. Back then it took having to load 3 different floppy disks in a row just to walk to the other side of the room. So so hyped for this game and hearing you wax nostalgic about you playing with your daughter during the intro - just damn. I respect every word you’ve said in this video
@@SwitchUpYt tell me about it! We roared and cheered when we worked out how to SPOILER ALERT FOR MONKEY ISLAND 2 get the beard from lechuck. And then that ending sequence! Did you ever play the Indiana jones and the date of Atlantis? Now that’s another remaster I’d love to see
Playing through the first and second games rn, can't wait to play this. It's annoying that it has to have the backlash about the graphics but that doesn't mean crap to me. Glad that it's a quality game, not that I thought any different. Love me some point n clicks!
As a fan of the Monkey Island games, I'm so glad this game came out. I remember reading somewhere when Timbleweed park came out Ron Gilbert was fighting with Disney on trying to get the IP licenses for Monkey Island. Back then it sounded like there wasn't going to be another Monkey Island game but now we have this game and I've heard rumors that Craig Derrick might be working on a Maniac Mansion remake.
Return to Monkey Island is one of my most anticipated games of all time and so glad to see it reviewing as well as it has been despite the public outcry surrounding the artstyle when the game was revealed. One of your best ever reviews guys and definitely feeling the nostalgia flood in 😎. Picked it up on Steam Deck and has been flawless so far!
@@eastern2687 I think a physical is on the way down the line. Tbh Ron Gilbert and Terrible Toybox have definitely earned my money and respect. Happy to invest by buying games (even digital) so we get more excellent adventure/point and clicks down the line!
One of the first games I played as well back in the day. Can’t wait to go back in time and round up those 30 year olds boys of mine to have a gaming weekend with their mum. 😂
Wowzers Mark, 6+ hours straight!! Is this your daughter's playthrough footage a la the JoJo fighting game? I don't miss AT ALL playing through point and clicks without a guide, but I hope you enjoyed it! The new artstyle looks a lot more cute in motion as opposed to in screenshots.
Love Monkey Island, pretty much my childhood playing the first 2 on Amiga then the rest on PC, would really prefer a big box PC version though instead of digital.
What a great review ... for such a fantastic game. Play it on PC and will buy it for Switch too, to play it with my son! Monkey Island ist my alltime favorite game series since the good old AMIGA days!
Some people just have a honest opinion, i for one think the art is atrocious, your only counter argument is they are stupid? Well you sir must be very insightful, NOT!
@@timhendrix414 ... i think it`s not about another opinion but about the haters to cursed the new artstyle and offend the team working on it in a personal way!
Wow that’s high marks! Is that a new record for you guys? This wasn’t something I was interested in, but I may get it now after your glowing recommendation.
Thanks for staying up late to get this review out. I really like the new art style. I'll be picking this up on Steam. Monkey Island wouldn't be the same to me unless I was actually pointing and clicking. The full on old school Amiga feeling.
@@SwitchUpYt I remember playing Monkey Island 2 with my mates, trying for ages to win that damn spitting contest. We finally found out the answer from watching Gamesmaster!
Do I need to play the other games in the series to understand what’s going on in this one? I never played the previous ones back in the day but this looks really good.
You can enjoy the story without playing the old games, but if you want to understand all the hints and references i would prefer playing the first two games before. also the third game (curse of monkey island) is a great one ...
It's up to you. Play them if you can. But otherwise, there's a scrapbook you can access from the main menu, that Guybrush will narrate and explain what happened in his earlier adventures.
Thanks for another great review! To be honest, I've never been a big point & click adventure player. They usually need some sort of narrative hook that draws me in, kind of like Telltale's The Walking Dead games or their take on Jurassic Park. I know those have a bit more button-y kind of mechanics, but structurally they feel point & click to me. Still, 95%... there has to be something special here. I'll add it to my wishlist and maybe consider it on sale down the line.
I don't remember that. I do remember in Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (can't remember if from full game or demo) that there's a cheat code you can enter to change Indy into a 3D version of Guybrush from Curse and when firing a bazooka, the ammo is a rubber chicken.
I remember playing the first game... then I got the 2nd one..couldn't play it until I got an upgrade on my computer a year later. I hope the game is atleast as good as I remember..
The game looks great and I definitely want to play it, but I'm so busy with Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Disney Dreamlight Valley and Bear and Breakfast that I'll have to get it some other time. And just like Bear and Breakfast, it's cheaper on the Brazilian eShop (about US$13).
The only bit of your score I’m not sure of being unbiased is value. £25 being a 19/20 for vfm?? You’d normally score a game of similar length about a 15/16 maybe with a caveat like “the ideal sweet spot being £x:xx” But I forgive you, for your love of the series Mark 😁
@@BehindTheAddiction It was in an interview that Ron said he views 1 & 2 as canon - but you’re right it’s mostly all in that scrapbook as well in some form. Certainly Curse is.
I don't buy games at full price almost ever. I may need to break that rule for this one, especially after seeing that piece on Stan's suit. Remember: We'll surely avoid scurvy if we all ate an orange.
I wish I had waited until it had gone on sale. Unfortunately i found after the end of second chapter, it went down hill. Just relying on nostalgia. And this is coming from a life long fan.
@@bottishg being bad or good is subjective and of cause what I said was my opinion. Same as someone saying it is good. However as I have played the whole thing I feel I'm justified to have an opinion, have you finished it?
@@bottishg quiz cards? You mean the trivia cards? Didnt you collect them all and answer them right the first time? Oh well. Did you manage to get all the multiple endings at least? The editors note at the end is the only thing that saved the game for me, to be honest.
The thing about the value score of this game, is that while I personally don't usually find much replay value in heavily story focused games, I have very fond memories of replaying Curse of Monkey Island repeatedly in my youth because the story, characters and presentation were just so charming and entertaining that even when I knew exactly how to solve all the puzzles and could basically run through the game on auto-pilot, it was still a fun time, kinda like re-watching a favourite movie. Based on everything I've read about this entry, it looks like the same deal
I have always wanted to experience Monkey Island for myself, and with such a terrific sequel, now is a perfect time to do just that. And even if there is a tiny bit of bias due to being a fan of the series, I have always trusted that SwitchUp seal of approval when it comes to having a fair and honest review.
Monkey island 1 on the amiga 500 was my childhood. Still in my top 5 till this day. Can't wait to give this ago. Might have to be pc for the mousy mouse though. Maybe we'll get a physical. Hopefully there's insult fighting, there has to be! :D
Perfect review, unbelievable you only got the game earlier today, played it, reviewed it and managed to edit the video and then upload it. Ive already purchased on the PC as I feel thats where it will be at its best, cannot wait to start playing it.
Wow what a score! Knew it would be good! So looking forward to this game. Spent hours on the previous version on my Amiga 500 back in the day, Sure monkey Island 2 had 11 disks! Tempted to wait for a physical though so it better hurry up or I’ll break 😂
Love the art style of this one! I'm not a huge fan of point and click adventures, but the humour and charm of this one has me thinking of giving it a go!
Absolutely loved the originals so was completely bowled over with excitement to hear this was out! I totally agree.with you on the art style it looks amazing and perfectly straddles the old and new, I am already smiling watching your review spotting locations that I recognise and its also great to hear some of the original voices (not sure if all of them are back) but Guybrush's voice just made me smile hearing it again! I rarely spend this much on a switch game these days but I will one hundred percent be getting this.
This was the genre that got me into gaming. My first one was Simon The Sorcerer 1 back in 1995 and then I played everything I could find , Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, Discoworld, Sam n Max etc. I'm so glad this is good. My only concern is the duration but that depends on how fast you solve the riddles.
I went through major discourse about visuals and art styles of video games being subjective. Well, some people still thought they knew better to the extent of harassing the creator.
This is the only game I’ve preordered on the Switch and couldn’t wait for it to release. I’m around 7 hours in and absolutely love the game! I remember playing the 1st and 2nd on the Amiga and this is a fantastic addition to the series. I’ve actually just gone and bought Monkey Island 1&2 on the Xbox Series X (emulates the 360 versions) so I can replay through them again! The only point and click adventures that come close to Monkey Island is the Broken Sword series 👍
The artstyle looks horrible, they actually destroyed the core of Monkey Island going with this abstract graphics. Ron Gilbert should apologize to the fans cause this is just unreal
@@dist221 apologize? 🤣🤣 maybe you shouldn't overrate your own taste?! 93% (steam) and 96% (google) of the players rated the game positive, not to mention the reviews!
@@bottishg Maybe you shouldn't trust the dogpile at Steam but instead listen to what the real fans think. Ron got alot of well deserved criticism because of the pinocchio graphics. But if you rely on these sites, 20 percent dislikes the game on metacritic
@@dist221 ... haha yes the "real fans" who give zero points only because of the graphics 🙈🤦🏼♂️ ... no thx ... but who cares, most of the results on metacritic are positiv too 😎👌🏻
so glad this one does the series justice. will definitely hold off for the physical as I've just started Crysis. which it will be if it crashes one more freaking time. 8 hard bug outs so far. hmmm....
Picked this up as soon as the preorder went live. Huge fan of the series but I've not played the originals in years. Should I cut short my playthrough of this and play through the originals again on my new steamdeck first? 🤔
I'm glad that you enjoyed it and I'm sure that fans will or at least some will. But I just can't get over the weird art design that and I'm not a big fan of point and couch adventure games. Maybe I'll pick this up in a year or two when it's like 50% off.
I had ‘pirated’ copies of the Monkey Island games on the Amiga back in the day. I’m glad this is not on 12 disks. Can this publisher develop Speedball 2 for the Switch also? 🙏
Alot people do, including me. It's just shameful, but I guess Ron gave up on the series along time ago. He should still apologize though, like Rockstar games officially did with the GTA trilogy
this is a retcon than NO long time monkey island fan wanted, we wanted a continuation of tales of monkey island and most of us agree that curse of monkey islans is the best looking game so at least i an made that it is no decannonized. ron gilbert fights like a cow
Hint book?!? NOOOOO!! … Easy mode?!? NOOOOOO!!! This isn’t the Monkey Island I grew up with! Will I buy it? YES! Of course YES! Always loved this series. Art style looks great.
I preordered it Mark but not had time today so I will play tomorrow. I played original games when they was on Floppy’s or whatever the old hard plastic and metal do you remember what they was called now? Remember Simon The Sorcerer Mate? 😋
95%? Really? You might as well ditch the review system completely and just say you liked it because you were wearing rose colored glasses. I've listened to the voices and that does NOT sound like voice acting worthy of Monkey Island. The delivery is wooden and Guybrush just sounds wrong. Can't stand the art style. Cal arts is lazy and cheap. Just look at Curse of Monkey Island, the level of detail and everything. There's also some wokeness in it where you become the Queen of Bermuda. This one is a hard pass for me.
Another great review SwitchUp!!! Always enjoy your videos! I feel like this is not for me but.... that is what I thought about Voice of Cards and I am enjoying it now. I will wait on this one. I am picking up Diofield Chronicles this week... to add to my back log... ugh....
But does it run on the Amiga? Shockingly both OS3 (classic) and OS4 (PPC) are still seeing releases. There is even a chance this game could run on OS4.1 considering shaders are supported on relatively modern AMD GPU’s through OpenGL.
Playing it at the moment and the new art style takes about 5 minutes to adjust to. Very talented visual designers and the style really works for what is basically a zany storybook tale. Thank you for your review and not spoiling anything. Although I never thought there was an actual 'secret' to Monkey Island (beyond it being a mysterious fabled place we get to explore in the first game). The second game bypasses the island itself, so I assumed there never was any intention to 'reveal' any secret. And Big Whoop (an obvious joke and irrelevant treasure) just added to that feeling. So...........................it will be interesting to see what Gilbert has devised.
Fun fact: the first video I ever watched on this channel had Monkey Island music playing - I hit the sub button within two seconds, and have been glad I did ever since. ❤️ Great review btw, I agree 100%!
I can't tell you how happy I am to see this is done right. I played the first, second and third games - loved them all (Curse is my favourite) - but didn't like the rest. This looks like a great return to form, can't wait to pick it up
I'm glad you enjoyed it, but this one's definitely not for me. I've just never enjoyed point and click style games. They've always felt more like a chore than anything.
The original Monkey Island games are some of my favourite games of all time. However i knew I still had to wait for a review from you! I'm surprised they haven't ported the other games in the series to the Switch. Seems like an easy wait to make money!
