Nigeria's agricultural sector has suffered years of mismanagement, inconsistent and poorly conceived government policies and lack of basic infrastructure, yet it accounts for over 26.8 percent of the nation's GDP and 2/3 of employment. It is no longer a major exporter of cocoa, groundnuts (peanuts), rubber and oil palm production which Nigeria led the world in is now mostly from obsolete varieties and overage trees. Nigeria's oil palm production is stagnant at around 180,000 tons annually and 25 years ago it was 300,000 tons. An even more dramatic decline in groundnut and palm oil production also has taken place. While Nigeria is one of the world's largest producers of palm oil, it still remains a net importer of palm oil. In this episode of Earthfile, analysts argue how Nigeria should increase its production of oil palm, encourage importation and the need to share information in the sector and highlighting the potential for boosting the nation's economy by concentrating on the enterprise dynamics.

Discovery of crude oil was a blessing, and a curse at the same time. Hundreds of Billions of $$$ has been made. But oil also destroyed Agriculture in Nigeria. I hope we're beginning to see a resurgence of Agric sector. Germany is in the process of banning fuel injection engines. All cars in Germany will soon be electric cars. When that happens, other nations would follow suit. At that point, crude oil would be less valuable. As oil revenue begins to dwindle for Nigeria progressively, I hope the nation would reclaim the glory in Agriculture it once had. Agriculture won't succeed in Nigeria without good roads. So the govt needs to build our roads, or built railways for transporting food all across the country.

Brothers there is a major reputation problem with palm oil production and you have an upper hand compared to the Eastern Asian producers: 1) Palm Oil is native to your area not an introduced species like Asia. You dont have Orangutan blood in your oil... 2) You can build an environmentally friendly industry in the native habitat which will win the PR campaign and you will sell your oil with premium price. 3) Use the image of job development and empowerment for the local communities particularly women. But you need to industrialise your system. Use the techniques from the Sought East Asian companies.

@@nkeanyifarmers-ruralfarmsp4534 Never grow the date palm from the seeds. The plant coming out of the seed is not like the mother plant and at least half the trees are male. You need to buy "Tissue cultured plants" or pups. You can buy them from different sources like Italy, UK, Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia. But I think Iran would be one of the cheapest options. Egypt might be easier as its closer to you.

I strongly advocate for economic awareness in this organization to get to the summit in oil palm production. We have to take our pride of place now. Many communities still feel oil palm growing and production is a tall order. It is easier as it has grown digital. Spread the oil palm gospel now and grow richer tomorrow. God bless us all in our strides to oil our purse and grow

Ve had dreams of farming since lil, hopefully can still get inexpensive acres of land to pursue. Nigeria needs to learn to move away from quick money no 1 wants to put in work only concerned 4 now now. We ve lost focus 4 future unlike our 4fadas who r always thinking n working 2wards a long term/time commitment, always looking to d future n making good plans 4 it. Yes is good to reap profit right away wen money's n work's been put into good businesses but nowadays we all just never look to or make plans to a promising future. Instead of us investing in ourselves, our children, fams, ppl & of course our beloved country by producing n buying locally, we prefer to sit in a corner doing phone work importing n consuming stuff dat has zero to nothing benefits nor contributions to our economy yet we continue to shout government I mean no1 says d govt ain't d source of all evil dat caused dis havocs. Fact's they contributed 97.9% yl we d ppl r also to blame. Just pray from now on God to grant us d will/spirit, strength, knowledge n understanding + a lil patience as we working hard now to nurse n return all our riches n booming economy n so much mo'better status back 2 us fast. Surely God ll bring back our glory: courage, wealth, riches, happiness, joy to our forever blessed glorious nation we in. All Africans my bros n sis Invest in ur country God bless each n every1dat agrees/agreed with me to moving 9ja/Africa 4ward. Western countries have tried every way to destroy palm oil production(and other Asian and African produce) by first requiring it to be label as tropical fat to discourage its consumption. Now that is not working they are using environmental labelling to stop its export to western countries. African must remember the major world consumer of edible oil and other produce are the two largest Asian neighbor China and India, their fast development in this century will provide opportunity to break the stranglehold of western exploitation, the only thing that need to do is not listen to their lies and work together to break their control of pricing that serve only the rich nations in the west.
