I would rather use Wonder Clips/Clever Clips instead of pinning, then you won't get holes in your PUL. Also for anyone nervous about sewing in zippers, I love Wonder Tape, a two sided wash-out tape. It holds it all in place while you sew.
Wish would would gave the finish size of the bags you already made, that would of helped me out really like the size of the blue one with the tree and the one you made on camera. This is so cool
Thank you so much for taking the mystery out of doing zippers!!! I had been struggling with them and your tutorial was very encouraging. I made a bag tonight. While I had trouble with the oil cloth I did manage a decent bag and inserted a zipper! Yeah, it's a success in my book.
Just FYI PUL is hospital grade. It does not melt in the dryer even on high heat. I have been drying pads with PUL in the dryer on high for over a decade and the PUL has never been damaged in any way.
Yes, I figured that out as well a while after I made the video/ I have been washing and drying the bags I made at high heat for 2 years and they are just fine.
Hi Felicia, I'm pretty new to sewing and have decided to try making these bags as an easier project. I'll be practicing with some scrap material before I invest in the PUL. I am hoping you can please answer a few questions I have before I begin. I would like to end up with about an 8"x8" bag, if I cut the fabric 9"x17" and use a 9" zipper (from stop to stop), should I end up about those dimensions (I understand my sewing skill, or lack thereof, will determine some of this). Also, do you have a recommended stitch I should use for this? I was thinking a straight stitch with a short stitch length, but I really am not too familiar with various stitches and the best uses for each. Thank you so much, your video has given me the confidence that I can do this!
I purchased 120 9 inch zippers on Amazon for $14.99. Another option for the inside is Ripe Stop nylon fabric. It is around $5 yd and is water proof too.
Did you ever make them and how did they hold up if you did? I have a mattress protector that has PUL and it lasted a few years of frequent washing, only has a couple small holes in the PUL I believe from my dog. I think the bags would hold up well! I'm going to make some with PUL remnants I ordered for about $9/m after tax!
Im loving your video, thanks for the info, the snack bags look great and im making some now but no zips. Please dont feel bad about not using organic cotton as all cotton is processed and theres nothing really enviromentally different in the biodegrading purpose. They both take ages to rot and have to be heavily processed to be recycled. Alot of manufacturers put things on labels to make it more sellable and to keep up with up to date trends. Watch stacey dooleys "blood sweat and tee shirts" documentary to really see how cotton is produced. You are totally right to say use what you already have or try to buy from charity shops/thrift stores as this will end up in land fill when not sold.

The bags actually hold up really well. I made a ton of them and they get washed inside out in laundry bags weekly. The biggest issue I have had is that my step kids who go back and forth between houses leave them at their mom’s house and I suspect they just get thrown away because they lay in used lunch boxes for days on end with leftovers in them. I have discovered I can also put these in the dryer. It doesn’t seem to overheat the PUL.
Definitely cheaper to get the zippers online rather than the fabric store, over $1.45 for a 7" and $2.50 for a 10"". I buy mine through Amazon and pay about 0.25 per for 7" 🙂.
Anabel Martineau I made some that were really small , probably around 4x4 finished size for snacks and then some closer to 6x6 or so for sandwiches. I think it depends on what kind of food you want to put in them. My kids don’t eat sandwiches so the smaller bags are great for them.

Yes, I do wash them inside out. They have held up great. My problem is that my kids loose them , but they have been washed by hand or in the washer for a long time now and they aren’t falling apart.
@@FeliciasWorld I was definitely anticipating my kid losing some as well, heh. Such as life, I guess, lol! Do you put them in the dryer as well? I'm wondering if the zippers would catch on the PUL
Does the PUL lining ever get caught in the zipper? Some other videos suggest top stitch the exterior fabric through the liner right below the zipper. Didn’t know if that’s possible with this pattern or not. If not necessary, would save a step. Thoughts, please? Thank you.
I haven’t had any problems with the PUL getting caught in the zipper at all. The PUL is much thicker than the cotton so I don’t think the zipper teeth grabs it.
I usually sew on a Bernine 750 and a Bernina 880, but I think in this video I may be using a Janome machine..Probably the 12000. However, you don't need a fancy machine to make these bags
Hi I would try experimenting with cereal or cracker bags from boxed cereal. I make dish scrubs and reuse the produce netting I get from onion and garlic bags. It feels so good to reuse!
Sorry, I don't have that any more. If you look at Brani's comment above, she purchased a boatload of zippers dirt cheap on Amazon. I have had great luck on Etsy.
I use them for carrot sticks, sugar snap peas etc. The keep up fine. Also, I put goldfish and crackers etc in them. Its just for school lunches so the food stays in there only for 4-5 hours usually.
