Reuse and upcycle those empty chicken feed bags

The chicken feed that I buy comes in bags made of woven plastic that can't be recycled. What to do with them? Reuse them and upcycle them into all kinds of things around the chicken run and the garden. Here are some ideas.
What ideas do you have to reuse the bags that your chicken feed comes in?

And today I found a new use for an opened out feed bag - I painted a big poppy to put at our gate to comemorate ANZAC day tomorrow.

I would love to see a wholistic story of your garden and your chickens (and whatever other growing/nurturing projects you have). For example, how did you begin, how do the different projects interact with one another, your philosophy, etc. This would be a very ambitious video, I know, but very interesting!
@chickensinmygarden
@chickensinmygarden 4 года назад
My goodness, yes it would be a major story. And as with any story that relies on nature, every season is different, every year is different - we started with a bare field and now have enough shelter to grow things that wouldn't survive then. There are a couple of shots of those early days in my video Don't feed the sparrows. The dim dream-like sequence filled with birdsong is our place as it is now. Now we have fruit trees and vege garden and a strawberry patch as well as a big wild area of native New Zealand trees and plants. Plus chickens! 🙂

When we go camping we use the bags to haul our fire wood in them and it makes it a cleaner way to load the wood up.

I make flower sacks with my extras. From the top to bottom I cut straight down the middle & either sew or staple down that open side then fill with potting soil, lay flat on table and make X slits in different spit down bag then plant some flowers let sit in shade a few days for roots to take and in top back make a hole to hang on nail and water good . I love them.

Timing Plus! I just finished my first 20kg bag of chicken feed. Had previously only bought 5 & 10kg's of feed. Used all those plastic bags to double bag (suspected) asbestos from the bottom of my back fence to comply with govt guidelines for responsible disposal at the tip. ($150 to drop in special asbestos skip). I need more bags now that you have given me all those ideas, eat up chickens!

wish I lived next door to you, you have a beautiful garden and lovly chickens, and all that fruit, yummy, my chickens finally accepted the new comers but it was rough going until I realized the older chickens did not like to be crowded with the newcomers to much so I had to add another roost, and boom the pecking screaming etc, reduced dramatically.

@@chickensinmygarden I had gotten a plastic tarp to put over the chickens run to provide a dry spot for their food when it rains and to give them some extra shade during the hot summers here. These are all great ideas. I have many of them stocked up and use them also. I have laid them on the ground to smother the grass in a new garden area. I bought black contractor bags and I would like to attach/glue/sew them on top of the bags to also black out the grass. Like a home made silage tarp. I wondered if I could sew them together on my old sewing machine with a basting stitch. Any ideas? Well wishes for you and your family. Thank you for the video.

You have to pay a fee to recycle grass clipping though the city. I have more than I have room for. But I use my feed bags for weeds, small sticks, surplus black walnuts, broken flower pots and all the rubbish that comes out of my garden if it is not just grass clippings I can put in my weekly bin for no extra charge. I am also a wood worker so I fill up bags with small cut off pieces of hardwoods with no bark and burn in a small wood stove since camp fires are no longer allowed at most state and natl park campgrounds. The stove has a cover and grate to keep sparks from coming out and is very easy to cook on and roast marshmelows too. An American tradition. But with a little care fish and chips can be done as well.

Great ideas !! I have a chicken who appears to have Sour Crop ? I have never seen it before but researched online so i am guessing it is the problem. Her crop feels like it has water in it. Have you had this problem before ? Glen, Sth. Australia.

@@jasminflower3814 Sad to say she didn't survive. It was heartbreaking... I have no chickens now. I have been researching anything and everything to do with what it could have been. I have two trees in my garden that I am suspicious about because of their toxicity. One is a Narrow Leaf Ash, the other is a Chinaberry Tree. My worst fear is somehow they ingested some part of the tree and it has caused this problem. I have had chickens before and never had any problem... Perplexed to say the least.
