I vividly recall Reverend Billy back in the early 80s playing keyboard for D.C. blues legend Root Boy Slim. Billy Wirtz would do a warm-up act prior to Slim's entrance, and not surprisingly - he had somehow, (and cleverly) captivated the audience, thus subtley stealing the spotlight from Slim. I attended about a dozen shows during this period, and with each show, Wirtz developed, honed, and polished to a high gloss lustre, an act that became an attraction unto itself. It wasn't long before Wirtz, inevitably parted ways with Root Boy Slim. It was a memorable pairing while it lasted, and a high point (no pun intended) for Root Boy during his post Sex Change Band transition, and Reverend Billy reaped many dividends from their brief association.
