Those old hymns ushered in the presence of God into the service. I too miss that kind of worship. People weren't ashamed to lift their hands and praise God. Today we are more concerned with titles, and numbers, and the size of th church. Nobody is being saved, we are just church hopping.

I know not everyone knows about these types of hymns but these are the songs that carried "our folks" over the years. I'm so thankful for this posting. There's only one church in my city that I know of that still sings "common meter." This takes me WAY, WAY WAY BACK! Thank Yaaaaa---

These are the hymns that brought us through hard times, I still sing them and refer to them often. They are the songs that help us, speak to us and minister to us. Hymns of preparation for preaching, praying, and keep you in the Spirit of worship.

After Sunday morning Worship service, I intentionally went into Intercessory prayer on behalf of marriage between a husband and his suitable helper "a virtuous wife," our children, the body of Christ, lost souls those outside of the Ark of Safety, those bound and captive to all types of addictions, disenfranchised, less fortunate.....As I prayed, God is asking America "Why are there any poor, sickness, disrespect, hatred, divisions, greed, political corruption and selfishness among My people who I (God) created in my Image! For I am a God of "love" Jn. 3:16!♥️ Almighty God is the only God who is Able to change the condition of man and woman's heart! 2 Chronicles 7: 13-15 Sin in our world indicates we "all" need a Savior! His sheep knows His voice and a stranger we shall never follow! Hallelujah to the Lamb that takes away the sins of humanity!

when i was a child, jim crow was still firmly in place. it didn't look like it was ever going to leave. church was the heart of the community. it was the place that you went to, to relieve stress and release your troubles of the world. the choir would get you started, and any choir that could not get you in the spirit of fellowship, well. they would get you up and on your feet and make you feel the spirit in your soul... and the preacher would come in on that last song. when you left there, you knew that you could go on. just another day that the Lord has kept you. these gospel hymns like this are what brought you through the storms. i didn't understand it then. i can appreciate it now.and these songs take me back there in my mind. that's why i love them so much.

I'm 20 but love these I remember going over my great grandmothers house and some days we talk about all the things we have gone through in life and we'd end up singing These old hymns miss them days miss you granny rest on I'll see you again one of these old days.
I agree! I'm 23 as well, and also a church musician and singer since I was 3 years old. While the contemporary stuff is...ok, it doesn't EVER make me feel and understand like these old hymns do! My grandmother used to teach them to me, and I love hearing these hymns on youtube, cuz I never hear them in the church anymore...it's like "hymn" is a bad word or something! People need to stop being ashamed of the traditional, and know that God blesses theough this music too, not just new stuff!

I know if you find a Primitive Baptist Church in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi or any other state that is apart of the National Primitive Baptist Convention, INC USA you will most definitely find them singing like this. Especially on Communion Sunday mornings. This coming from a Primitive Baptist minister. We stil giving God the glory in this way. Always have, always do, and always will......PRAISE GOD SAINTS!

churches has forgot these old gospel hymns that ushers in the presence of Jesus, deliverance, healing, & etc with tears in your eyes from the 1st verse... singing gratefulness on your lips and a moan that will bring out a war cry from the pit of your belly...

What? You are from Greensboro? Me too! I grew up in church at Oak Springs Baptist Church in Stokesdale. Then I joined Cedar Grove Baptist in Terra Carta (Greensboro). I visited alot before joining, while Pastor Settles passed. I also grew up hearing Pastors Graves (St. James) and Bishop Wells (Wells Memorial COGIC). It's a small world!

cornellus berry, you can obtain traditional gospel songs like this online such as youtube, iTunes or amazon. nothing like the old way which is spirit filled. i can appreciate these songs because the ones who created them were telling a testimony or spirit filled story. nothing like really feeling the spirit. be blessed

Everyone is so caught up, tradegically to new contemporary/secular sounding music and has nearly forgotten the songs that actually have meaning and truth. Down home back to basic gospel music needs a swift come back.
I find no comfort in the church music of today. it sort of leaves you with an empty feeling. I so hope they young can pick up our music before it is forever gone out of the memory and consciousness of our people.
