Great video, I remember visiting BRML Springburn in 1989. MC metals had just moved in after the yard in Shettleston was closed. They were cutting up classes 08, 25, 26 27, 31, 45, 47,81 and 85s. What a sad sight. The full area has changed now. That half of the works and scrap yard is a Tesco and car park. The high flats at the west side, Sighthill are away and at the east side, Red road are all away and st Rollox closed last year.

Sad scenes but all part of the story. You’ve got some unique footage there with the MC 20 dragging the 50s. That scene at the end with the DMU is brutal!

Cheers bud, yep it was a good day, I wrote and applied for permission to spend the day with them filming. They were great and accommodating. Sad but historic.

In case you`re wondering why the 20 at 1.57 has its nose roof ripped open i can now tell you. A few weeks before your visit a group of us had visited MC Metals to purchase spares for a class 20 we owned at the time. A 20 was found there with compressors that were in excellent condition. To access them the scrappy suggested taking off the nose roof which he did with a JCB with a pincer fitting allowing the compressors to be craned out. So now you know. 😄

Brings back memories of my visits to Vic Berry scrapyard in Leicester.. I was not allowed to wander about while they were working but I visited three times and have 3 loco side numbers one of whitch I paid £25 for the other two I got for making a video for Vic..All gone now and blocks of flats cover the land which were originally part of the sidings of the Great Central railway. If you want to see it it's on my You tube site.. Cheers. Thanks for sharing.

I visited in August 93 and when asked was told yes you can go round and take photos but none for magazine publication. I've loads of photos of this place and so many memories of that day rip everything that died there and rip mc metals

It's heartbreaking to see. At least 20189 escaped from the carnage and is still on the main line.

Agreed, I think a few of the cabs exist. I am pretty certain someone bought the cab from Ajax.

By the sounds of it, class 20189 is the last surviving bit of MC metals?

50046 was the one class 50 that should have been saved. Legendary loco. All the films of 50's on RU-vid now heavily feature Ajax. And what is a 33 doing in a Glasgow scrap yard? Did someone think it was a 26 or 27 😁

Can any parts of these beloved Diesels be bought privately ? I want the front section of a Class 37 with instruments (if any) for my personal nostalgia ?

All of this got smashed up and scrapped long ago. You would be better off buying one of the remaining examples intact. Probably cost you 60k to 100k though. Or 5k to 10k if you just want the front end cut off.

What a sad story brought tears to my eyes watching all those wonderful locos going to waste just to end up with Class 66's The only people who got rich from the railway was the scrapman

And then just like that it ended in 1996. A good stock of valuable scrap waiting at Bescot was pickled by preservation instead.

Hi Harry, There is a scrapyard in Newport within the docks where most of the ex railway stock is going to be cut up at the moment.

EMR Metals in Kingsbury have done a lot including coaches and the early Eurostar units. It just depends what contracts are being tendered that year as to whether they have any stuff in. EMR are an excellent scrap processor.
