There's a very handy tool from Fiskars which allows you to pick those weeds, roots and all when standing up. Much faster and saves your back and knees.

Hi. So the first run you did with the tines is actually called dethatching. The second run you did with the blades (you called verticutting) is actually sacrifying. You only really need to do the second one. Verticut is similar but raise the blades just for the grass, not into the soil. Also look into compost lawn spreaders. Thank me later 😂

Stuart, an avid subscriber but with an unfortunate contradiction to your video. Not a negative point on you because I thought the same having followed the directions on the back of the weedkiller boxes that talk about starting in MArch and the growing season, that I believed it was. Firstly though as has been mentioned by some others, do yourself a favour and get the Fiskar tool. It's a game changer both in terms of time and the thanks from your back the next day👍. Now to the chemical weedkilling. You refer to weedkilling being done a month or two earlier. Yes, some manufacturers talk about starting earlier BUT that is in optimal conditions and the VERY earliest. They don't tell you that unless the external environment and growth is exactly right, it'll have little to no effect!! I spoke to one of the major manufacturers having spent a couple of hundred pounds on the chemicals and treated the lawn in exactly the correct method, with the strongest of doses that was recommended. I'd say

I wouldn't have thought more seed was necessary on an existing lawn, just bare patches. I know what you mean about chemicals not working as tried loads of the bottled stuff you attach the hose and spray (as it's easy) with no joy. The granules work though, but must be spread evenly or actually causes scorch marks. I did this once with a well known brand but ran out half way through and couldn't do more for a few weeks. After a while you could clearly since the difference, with the half I'd done looking lush, healthy and green and the rest still yellowish.

I have really enjoyed your content, as iam a carpenter. However the last few years I've really been getting in to nature as it's so beneficial to our mental wellbeing. A note on lawns, they're Barron sterile inventions, thought up not lobg ago. Dandelions are a very important wild flower, not weed, just stop and see how many bees are on them at this time if year, a great early source of nectar. I recomend watch joel ashton wild your garden on RU-vid for more info.

I fully agree with the compost as grass nutrient. I use a landzie compost spreader to save time and effort and I highly recommend it. The other advice I would give is that instead of rye grass (probably the worst grass seed you can use really) you go for bent grass. You will see the rewards offered by a grass that looks after herself and that is perfect for stripping…With rye grass you will always lose the battle against weeds, in particular poa…

About 5 weeks ago, I actually did get out there and give the lawn a first cut, a few days later I applied some lawn feed / weed-moss killer. Most of the moss has gone black now, and the grass is super green. But I need to now do what you're doing in this video and scarify the whole lawn. It's got a LOT of moss in it, so when that's gone I can spread a bunch of lawn seed. My lawn is about half the size of the part you've done in this video, so hopefully won't take too long 🙂 thanks for the video

Wow - the 'raking compost into the lawn' trick is a real game-changer for me. It reminds me of how we used to do it in Zimbabwe. We even used a top layer of tobacco a few times as well (yes, seriously - waste tobacco was cheap because there was so much good quality tobacco being cultivated).

Can't early weed kill and rehab your lawn in spring (which is a yearly thing you should do if you actually care about your lawn). Scalp it as low as you can, scarify it, overseed it and you're good to go. Best thing to do is stay on top of it through the year. Also Fiskars make a super nice weeding tool that saves you having to be down on the floor. If you stay on top of the weeds and you keep the sward nice and thick with a yearly scarify and overseed you shouldn't really ever need weed killer - moss killer, maybe, lawn sand, but never weed killer. You're definitely best off cutting the grass super short before scarifying, btw - if your lawn doesn't look like somebody has been through it with a plow when you're done you're probably not doing it right, it'll recover in a few weeks even if you really strip it, even without seed (but you still need seed). In re compost, if you have an uneven lawn get some with sand in it because it'll fill in the depressions and won't rot down and will help with drainage.

To kill the weeds mix 50% glysophate (Round up)50% water in a Jam jar. Paint a little of the mixture on to each weed head of the weed. Leave for 10 days and the weed and root will be dead and will not grow back. Be careful not to spill or paint the existing grass as it will kill it as well. I has to be easier and more long lasting than the knife method good luck

Good job but verticutting is usually done with a vertical blade and not into the soil. The scarifier should be used deeper, cutting through into the soil. I like to go about 10mm with a scarifier, that leaves a nice channel for your seed to work into. Also get yourself a compost roller, they are great for spreading a nice even layer and any larger material is left inside, this can then be chucked into your compost pile.

I really like the simplicity of just adding compost. It would be really useful if you could show us how the blades of the scarifiers compare. And if you could indicate how far down we should get the machines to rake out that thatch so as to get the balance right between being effective and scalping the lawn! The vertical scarifier sounds like it does a different job to the larger motor mower scarifying blade. I have an electric scarifier with two types of fittings, one being solid metal prongs and one being a wire-type structure, and I suspect you may be using the same (not sure). You were lucky to find some sun ☀️! PS, any tips for getting rid of the multiple ants nests that seem to have moved in? Last year I fought them off through the summer, but they won the day, especially the nasty brown ants 😢
