Flash Comics No. 20 Conservation Episode 7: Trimming Tengujo, reassembly, press, and final results.
In this video series we evaluate this golden age comic book--Flash Comics #20, from August 1941--for conservation and submission to CGC. In today’s video I trim the excess Tengujo, reassemble the comic and replace the staples, give the comic a final press, and show off the final results!
The materials and methods I use are archival and are reversible. If done properly, they do not result in a purple restored label from CGC.

How easy you made it look with the staples and I know from experience it’s often a struggle. I still insert my wraps one or two at a time for the most part. Impeccable work on a gorgeous book, Dr Paul. Can’t wait to see it back from CGC.

another great job , Dr. Phil ! you're preserving that book for probably another 200 years ! i just bought 2 Adventure Comics , numbers 54 and 75 , both books still have wonderful page quality to them . as i've said before , DC really did use excellent paper for their printing of their books !

Dr. Paul I might have asked this in the past. Can you recommend a comic book cleaner who wet cleans books using your methods? Thanks for your instructive channel. Your conservative techniques really appeals to me.

Hi Michael thank you for the kind words and vote of confidence. Not many cleaners and pressers do this sort of work professionally, because it's so time-consuming it is very difficult to charge a reasonable fee and make a reasonable living. For most comic books the economics don't work. It takes a special comic book to justify the expense. Try posting on our FaceBook Comic Book Conservation Group some pics of your project and ask there if anyone is interested in taking it on. You could also check out Kenny Sanderson on Instagram or my co-host for the Comic Book Conservation live show Phill over at Phantom Restoration. They both do amazing work.

James, welcome back! Thank you for the kind words. I know about the feature of the Capable Staple Tool. I specifically don’t use it because I like the arms of the staple to keep a natural bend and when I’ve used it in the past I tended to end up with the arms being straightened out and looking unnatural. 👍🏽

All American, DC had a higher grade of paper then MJL..War time paper had different grade of paper.Near the end of the War some of the companies went to one staple.

Have you ever had a non brittle cover fall apart in a wet bath? A few pieces (corner pieces) separated from the book, good thing I am trying a practice book

Not really. I’ve had a few spine splits early on in practice but not corners falling off. How long are you in the water bath?

About 15 .minutes no chemical, and it was during a gentile agitation, should I have just moisten before going for full wetting?

What video has direction on how to mix your hydroxide solution. I see plenty where you add that solution to water and triton for wash, but I can't find guidance on how to prepare the 25% hydroxide concentrate

Sorry MT i've covered it lots in the past but you are correct, not recently. It's very simple, and the reason we use the super-saturated solution is that it's difficult to get incorrect and you don't need any special equipment to make it. It's technically 1.6 grams/liter, but as long as you add the calcium hydroxide powder to the water, shake, let settle, and still have the white precipitate at the bottom, you have enough. Better to use too much than not enough, so i tell folks to use 2 grams per liter, which is about 1 cc if you have metric measuring spoons or 1/4 teaspoon if you have imperial measuring spoons. Miscut pages and misaligned art are pretty common in golden age comic books. They were considered disposable entertainment.

By any chance do you offer these services to fans? I just picked up a copy of Flash 139 (a book I’ve hunted for along time) for an insane price. The book has some damage and I do not trust myself to try and restore it 😂😂😂

Dr Paul. I notice you didnt use srp during your final pressing. Do you use it sometimes. Or not really.

Travis, I tend not to use it if I’m using humidity. I’ve found for healthy books high humidity allows a nice press with less reversion, but if you use SRP with high humidity you can get cockling. So I don’t use SRP anymore if I humidity books prior to a press.

MT, i always use the least invasive method that i expect will yield the desired results. So i very rarely use hydrogen peroxide on comic books. I only use it on severely stained books and then only at 0.5%.
