In 1983, I got a high school summer internship at NASA, programming FORTRAN on punch cards. Things have changed a lot since then!

1983 with Commodore Basic (C64), programs were saved to a tape drive.

The problem with using the bureau's statistics is that there's no way to know how much will be outsourced. Were only 6 months from 2025 and the software and cybermarkets are saturated as hell with applicants. I don't know if I buy it. There's no Jobs. Not to mention Tech Lead's new video is eye opening despite his trollish nature.

There are hardly any entry level jobs in SW or Cyber Sec. Cyber sec is even more brutal in this regard.

I remember a 2000 article interviewing various scientists/inventors, asking them to prognosticate about the year 2050. Ray Kurzweil said the 2050 would be here by 2020. :- )

I got my first full-time tech job(Linux support at a web host) in 2010. I was 17 at the time and bluffed my way in with "Working on my A+" and a willingness to work weird hours for low pay.

My first paid job was in 2002 as a ASP programmer and Microsoft Visual Basic now I'm a Fullstack Engineer really excited with everything that is happening right now.

What year? Well... my first "tech" job of any sort would have been in, aaah, 1997 I think. That first tech job was working in a combination of desktop support, network operations (working with Novell Netware III to really date myself) and AS/400 operations. I did that for a few years and then my first programming job (which is really more when I consider my "tech career" as starting) came along in early 2000.

I think a computer is the ultimate engineering device which really got me into tech but after getting into tech, I was mostly working on software which includes AI and other programs.

Think about all the new computer chips, processing power and massive infrastructure that would have to change for all of this to happen. Programmers (real ones) aren't going anywhere. Sure jobs have been lost, but the demand is still there. Likely it will take much more time, several decades even before AI is going to replace engineers to that degree. AI is the new hype and yes there are tools, but they will help with productivity at a much more efficient level. When the economy returns, more jobs will pop up. Programmers should keep their skills sharp and focus on being better. New tech is coming as well.

I've been into tech ever since i was young, twenty years ago now. And I agree with your point, AI should be used as a tool, not as a replacement for jobs. AI should be a copilot!

Im choosing nursing. Yeah nursing is high burnout and stress....but i cant sit behind a computer 8-12 hours a day typing away. Then do it all over again...and again....

Ai is crap at writing good code, the near term impact will be brain drain to AI development to try and make it better. But for now it’s terrible.

AI rarely writes well working code, so you must use your brain anyway. It can't immediately fix an error, its solutions almost never work. I expect AI to quickly solve a problem, but it generates something wrong. But AI isn't useless, Chat GPT and Claude AI wrote some functional for my first Python project. It wasn't from the first attempt, though. It's better to learn documentation, than to hope that AI will make everything for you.

The main thing is that it saves time, especially on code generation from your current context, even when it’s slightly wrong. That’s been my experience anyway.

😮 software engineering is a job won't exist soon and if it does none of the people in the comment section here are good enough that you'll have a job😮 the very corporations you're trying to get a job at are trying to replace you and you're trying to get a job in this field😮 it just doesn't make sense if you think about it like 2 seconds😮 like how is that different from you're trying to get a job as a bus driver and there's a law that the government is trying to pass and the bus companies to make bus driving illegal because somehow it makes them more money 🤑
