In this, the first episode of the Flower Class Corvette build, we assemble the hull and prepare the decks for the Pontos brass parts. My Patreon pages are at www.patreon.co...
Well K166 - HMCS Snowberry was sadly scrapped in my hometown of Middlesbrough. Getting back to modelling so these instructional videos are a godsend. Thanks
It's nice to see that "ederly sailors" still indulge in their hobbies. Modeling needs a certain degree of mental maturity, a lot of experience, a steady hand and technical knowledge to build models in "museum quality". Younger people prefer videogames, but seasoned persons are rather rare in this field; for modeling it's just the other way round...
Thanks and the age thing is an interesting observation. If I look at my analytics a tiny proportion (much less than 1%) are in the 18-34 age bracket. I find that most viewers are a similar age to me. Maybe the expense of kits, accessories and materials may also be a factor as well as time: I suppose retirement gives plenty of it to see through a build like this.
Timely, I am about to start this model in a week or so myself. Although probably not doing the PE, just the base kit. Thanks and will be following with interest.
Hello from Italy, I'm building this exact model after a 20 / 25 years hiatus from model kits (minus the Pontos set, I wanted to keep it simpler for my first real kit since I was a kid). I'm very glad I found your video, I'll try to tag along but my full time job doesn't allow for much building time during the work-week I'm afraid. Also the hull in my kit was quite a bit more warped than yours, it felt I needed to be an octopus to put it together and had to order some putty to fully cover the small gaps. I appreciated the lower cost of the kit, especially for a "new beginner" like me, but it comes with its issues.
Hi It’s great to hear that you’ve got back into the hobby after the break and the Flower is a great subject to get back to it. My hull has turned out ok but agreed - it does need quite a bit of work to get right. Stick with it and we’ll get this one done together! 👍
It is so funny, my uncle Martin served as radio operater on the snowberry during all of ww2. He told me once he and a few others were having a smoke on the top roof by the front steering deck whe they saw a torpedo approaching them midship and before they could spring into action the torpedo pasted under them as the corvettes tended to Bob on the water.
If anyone can turn this kit into master piece Steve it's you. Shame that revel still have issues with there kit's.. Would loved to see you build the updated 1/72 flower class Corvette. Looks like it's been discontinued sadly.
I rebuilt one of these kits - the old multi-coloured sprue version! - into a reasonable facsimile of HMCS Alberni once. It was through my work, and a rare charitable job on the part of my boss, so there was no question of a set of metal details being thrown into the bargain. The kit had been donated to an upstart museum and the operator was desperate for someone to save the day and turn into the -ahem- short forecastle version corvette he required. The result was a grade B, I think, as I hadn't the time or resources to build a true museum model, but the client was over the Moon with the results. Imagine the air going out of my sails when I took the opportunity to visit a hobby shop in another town and saw, on display, a beautifully, built, re-detailed, and weathered version of the kit. The owner confirmed the incorporation of a metal details kit, and my satisfaction with my Alberni just sank! I have to take satisfaction in having made one of very few short-bow models out there.
Something I learned many years ago is that it doesn’t matter how good we think we are there’s always someone better or with some new ways of doing something. I’d build a model then go to a model show and wonder why I bothered.
I built the bigger version many years ago. I bought some resin extras and some upgrade handrails. Before the days of ebay searches to find just about anything. I had some parts sent from America for my last built 😄
Good ol' Fridays and Pontos! After flipping my 1/72nd hull about my cramped model desk i can see the wisdom in the 1/144, shame it wasn't 1/200 to scale with your Hood model. A little miffed you are doing the Canadian model but i can still borrow your wisdom and insight for my bigger HMS Bluebell as the differences are not so different. Great start on yours, i'm still fixing up the stern plating on mine! FYI. I found a picture showing the wooden deck panel on a 'Flower' and it was a good four inches higher than the steel plate.
@@TheModelShedthe 1/72 is a challenging kit but once finished it’s an amazing kit. It was my first ship build and enjoyed (for the most part) building.
Off to a fine start. I watched another build of this kit a few years back, and I believe there is an issue with the quarter deck sitting too low. I believe it was the deck wasn't flush with scuppers on the sides and stern, but with my memory, I am mostly wrong. Looking forward to your build as I was with the Hood.
Talking of the Pontos instructions, I generally view them on my laptop or iPad, the one ig advantage of which is that you can zoom in which can be very handy for working out which way to fold some of the smaller pieces.
In addition, any changes / improvements will be incorporated in the on-line instructions. But the idea of putting the Pontos instruction in a plastic sleeve is also good (some people aren't comfortable with electronics). I've found Pontos sheets to be extremely fragile and easily abraded.
Hi mate. Great videos spent many a night watching them as I've recently been given the HMS Snowberry model kit and have been watching your videos for tips. I'm looking at paints and I actually want to make this model as close to HMS Clematis as I possibly can as my great grandad served on the ship. Would you by any chance have any tips as to find out which colours to use to replicate the colours of it when it was in service in WW2? Also, a brand that you prefer? Any link you can share would be fantastic. Hope it looks half as good as yours Tha ks for the videos. Keep it going!
thanks Sean. I suggest you go over to sovereign hobbies where you’ll find information about colour schemes. Flowers carries different colours so you need to know what applies to your particular build. If you get the RN colour names from sovereign you can match them to your your own paint range or use their own colourcoats range.
I agree about the boxing of Revell box kits. Terrible design and hard to open. Impossible to store the kit while building. Revell...what were you thinking?
@@TheModelShed a quick search of scalemates shows braces in the 1/72 kit so it does look like your suspicions about them being artefacts from the reduction are correct 👍
Hi Steve, just starting to watch this build for a second time. Can I ask please ask, did you do a review of the Pontos set for this model because I can't seem to find one on your channel.. Best wishes Vic.
did these ships not have a steel deck? not wood. the cruel sea movie, has a flower class in it, it does not appear to have a wooden deck. (excellent movie)
Hi. You’re right the Flowers did have steel decks but some had limited areas of wooden deck particularly ahead of the 4” mounting. The Snowberry certainly had this but probably not the wooden bridge decks which Pontos supply.
Hi, Steve, I continue to watch your videos, I haven't bought a corvette yet, but I'm planning to add a German submarine to it for completeness. That is, the fact that he threw depth charges. By the way, why don't you respond to an email sent to you by email?
Hi Sergey. when did you email me and what address did you use? I’ve checked my folders including the spam folders and I can’t see anything. please could you resend to themodelshedchannel@gmail.com
I miss the Hood build already but this is a good replacement. Do you plan on doing any "canning" on the hull plates? I know smaller ships like destroyers, mine layers, etc. had pretty rough plate work. It was further stressed in action. Looking at photos of K181 it looks like someone took a large hammer to it. Regardless, this should be a really interesting build. Watching intently!
I'm going for an easy life and doing her as Snowberry Nick. I'm hoping that Revell and Pontos have done their homework and it will build accurately from those kits. Who knows there will probably be a few inaccuracies along the way.
@@TheModelShed I decided I hated white ship came base and halted my build for a while. I'd prefer to find a none western approaches scheme to apply to the Revell ship, but haven't found time todo any research yet. (I still have the 1/72 scale version in the stash, but that needs a lot of resin or 3D printed extras, which I'm currently reluctant to spend given I don't have the display space).
Hi Paul yes I thin the 1500 50% with mr hobby lacquer thinners. It dries to a lovely satin sheen at that ratio which shows up errors better than the grey which is a bit more Matt.
@@TheModelShed Is there any reason why you don't use Mr Surfacer 1000 as a primer as I think I will use this for the hood build. I have never used this product so need all the help I can
Further, Steve. I’m not sure if this photo of what I am referring to will post. i.pinimg.com/736x/28/8e/2a/288e2ac3e7e2f02a76255da455dee8d5.jpg. So, it seems the steel deck was not featureless, but I do not have model in hand. Just planning ahead. At 1/144 I could at least scribe some seams. I have no plans though.
