On April 21st 1918, a blood red triplane crashed behind a sector of the western front controlled by an Australian Gunnery Unit, in the Somme valley. The deceased pilot was the legendary Manfred Von Richthofen. The final aircraft flown by Richthofen upon his death, the Fokker Dr 1 became forever tied to the legend the Red baron.
The Fokker Dr 1 was its self a German response to the British Sopwith Triplane, which appeared in the skies above the western front in late 1916. The Fokker Dr 1 itself first entered front line service with various Jastas of the Luftstreitkrafte in August of 1917. Initially Von Richthofen was not impressed by the Dr 1 despite a glowing recommendation by friend and rival Werner Voss.
When Voss began to rack up a higher kill count, Richthofen reconsidered and the rest was history. The type was also flown by Rictoften’s brother Lothar Von Richthofen, and the Red Baron’s Jasta 11. The DR 1 was also other German aces like Werner Voss , Ernst Udet, and future heads of the Luftwaffe Herrmann Goering and Robert Ritter Von Griem.
The aircraft in this video depicts the Fokker Dr 1 flown by Ltn Paul Hoffman. This aircraft flew with Jasta 12, Toulis Aerodrome, Circa March 1918. As an added bonus you will also see same kit I made in 2015. That model depicts the Fokker Dr 1 flown by Ltn. Johannes ("Hans") Werner, Jasta 14 , Boncourt , circa January 1918.
So join me in this build video of the Revel 1/72 scale Fokker Dr 1 Triplane
And as always Happy Modelling (and stay safe)
