I’ve always viewed Supergirl as a character that had the potential to be a way more compelling and popular character than simply being Superman’s little cousin/girl Superman. Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow gives me hope that authors still care about their characters
It seems strange to me how in depth the feelings of loss and loneliness are explored in some characters like Batman who lost two people he loved and yet Kara who lost her parents, home, everyone she knew growing up, entire culture (Like we always talk about how we can never again experience holidays the way we did as a child but for her that's REALLY true) as a teenager are just glanced over in many of her stories.
If I had a nickel for every time Implicitly Pretentious mentioned trauma, I'd have $12.75, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened 255 times.
“Even in an indifferent universe, caring still matters.” My favorite Neil Gaiman novel, Anansi Boys, talks about stories, and how they shape the world by shaping the people. When Tiger owned the stories, they were all dark, brutal stories about how hard the world was, about fear, and how survival through force was all that mattered. When Anansi owned the stories, they were about being clever, and being a trickster; about getting work done without working as hard, but ultimately about hope and joy. I feel like we’re currently fighting a war about whose stories are true: is the world a hard place, where we should fear those who aren’t part of our tribe, or does caring and love extend to those who don’t look like us, or benefit us?
Kara has so much potential as a character! I hate it when she is written as just... Superman, but a girl. Good Supergirl stories dig into her unique traits and experiences
Just binge read Woman of Tomorrow this past weekend and almost shed a tear at the “you’ll always be my baby girl” line from Kara’s father man this was one of the best graphic novels I’ve read in a long time
I always like Supergirl because of her more intimate relation to Krypton. Clark, despite being kryptonian, will always view the tragedy of Krypton as an outsider while Kara had a life there.
I've always found the potential of Kara as a character very interesting. This story is just perfect in that regard in my opinion ! Like you said there is an harmony between "emotional realism and it's apirational perspective". Not to mention it's a story about Supergirl *without* Superman, it's truly *her* story, something I really appreciate because it allows Kara to be something else than just a young girl who don't want to be regarded as Superman's cousin while also wanting Clark to be proud of her. It's a touching story about her loss, about a more mature yet still broken Kara. She heals by trying to help someone else healing from a similar pain in a journey where they bond and help others overcome their suffering in some way or another. Also the art is as beautiful as the story itself omg !
Can't agree more, honestly it's the Deluxe Edition story I'm waiting to be announced already. The art alone is worth that large format, let alone the story. I think my only problem with the story ended up being when Kara said she 'hates superman' when she was on that anti-superman planet, but that might've just been a knee jerk reaction, since I've had some ups and downs with Tom King stories and characters I already liked, and I feel Supergirl wouldn't really think/say that...but maybe it was just the state she was in or something. 😅 [Ups: Superman-Up in the Sky, parts of Heroes in Crisis, parts of Mr Miracle, his Batman run, Vision. Downs: Strange Adventures, parts of Heroes in Crisis, parts of mr Miracle, and some smaller parts of the Batman run, but honestly it gets way too much hate imo] But the rest of the story was great, and I felt like some moments really hit home. Personally, I like a more optimistic/perky Kara, silver-age style/less 'anger issues' style [idk why writers really want to give Kryptonians anger issues as their 'key flaw' so often...I mean even Clark gets that a lot🤔], but I know that's kind of fallen out of fashion, maybe even as far back as the DCAU version. But still, I'd say as far as Kara stories go, this one is up there as one of the greats. 😁
@@wafagdplqs4421 They really do 😅 I get it probably comes from a place of hightening tension in super-family stories. Give the character who can decimate buildings in a single punch anger issues, see what finally lights that short fuse of theirs! Super tension abound! But I also think it doesn't fit most of them, really. Especially Clark, it feels like good ol 'embodiment of hope' midwest farmboy Clark Kent wouldn't have that kind of issue, given his usual demeaner, especially in the face of daunting odds. Kara's a give or take, if she's silver agey, then it really doesn't fit either. But if it's a moderny angsty Kara, then maybe. Power Girl.....maybe. But she always hit me as more of a kind of proud/almost sassy kind of superheroine, than angry. Conor....okay yeah, maybe Conor. 😅tho it does depend on his era too... it's very odd how they all get hit with it at some point though...
@@NichoMania2it's probably just a phase lmao. But like you said, it depends, it can be pretty understandable some character have anger issues and even then, it also depends which era of the character you're talking about.
@@NichoMania2 even dcau clark had anger issues like darkseid killing dan turpin, wanting to end darkseid life in a justice league episode, being very distrustful and angry at what lex was doing in justice league unlimited. also clark and kara being angry at what Cadmus was doing in justice league unlimited. even in the epsiode for the man who has everything, clark was really pissed off at mongul for giving him that horrible gift for him. there's nothing wrong with superhero characters getting angry about a situation that they dislike. what superman can't hate lex or darkseid for doing horrible things to people?
YAY, Sal for getting recognized by a big time RU-vidr! (Love you, Sir) Great essay, Leo. That hit really hard. That was an amazing character dissection along with your awesome insight.
Can't wait to see James Gunn make a movie of this or whoever he assigns as director. Definitely going to be one heck of a ride and odyssey to watch for Kara Zor-El. It's the kind of great stories we need for the new cinematic DC Universe.
It took months of Sal and Tiff raving about Woman of Tomorrow to get me to read it. And I must say, it really stuck with me. Tom King writes a lot about trauma but this one is a true standout.
If done right I could see the Supergirl movie being an absolute masterpiece. I'm not sure who would direct it but with Gunn's experience on GotG and GotG3 specifically I could see him maybe doing it, i mean Superman Legacy can't be the only movie he directs.
I think it's interesting that Tom King has come around from being one of the people who doesn't get the Superman character/family to someone who has written two of their best stories. (This and Superman Up in the Sky)
I feel that, though I also hope it comes with a big Mr Miracle retrospective. I'd love to see him react to old Mr Miracle and the various takes authors had on him, from the original pivotal Jack Kirby run, through Englehart, and into other Fourth World books too, all to lead up to Tom King's, just to get a full perspective on the character. [I have some likes/dislikes for the Mr Miracle miniseries, but I'm glad it brought the character to the public eye again. 😁Let alone there's still some great moments and writing.]
"woman of Tomorrow is about trauma" Of course it is, its a Tom King book 🤣 I love his comics, and the art by Bilquis Evely, my god it's beautiful. I'm so happy there is such a unique brazilian artist in the game
Supergirl/Kara Zor-El is what got me into reading DC Comics and watching their movies and vice versa, her whole character is somewhat powerful, inspiring and very relatable. I've even related to her a few times when growing up, couldn't believe that a comic book, fictional character actually saved my life when I was going through the worse time in my life, High School had screwed me over mentally with the amount of bullies I had to deal with on a daily basis before I snapped completely, went through a deep depression, refusing to go to school, couldn't even get out of bed, couldn't even eat or drink... My anxiety was getting worse around that time as well so I was put on medication before being home schooled finally, but through that dark time, I read up on comics about Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow made me realize that Kara Zor-El's character somehow saved my life without me realizing it, I read her comics when I was going through the trauma of dealing with my anxiety, along with my own dad going through it as well, it was the worse time for both of us... But Kara somehow kept me going, it was like she was there with me, telling me to "hold on a little while longer, it's going to be okay, you're stronger than you think" With her own trauma of losing home many times, I relate to that, I've moved from home to home with family a few times, having to say goodbye to the friends and family I've met and never see them again, it was another reason why I relate to her so much. So I say again... Supergirl saved my life... I only wish I could thank her if she existed in person, to tell her how thankful I am of her saving my life through a dark time of my own.
“Even in an indifferent Universe…caring still matters” I’ve come to view Indifference as a sort of Placebo Plague. As the saying goes, “One bad apple spoils the bunch” and just so does indifference often brew indifference in others. Why bother caring if your peers don’t care? But it’s caring despite the commonplace indifference that leads to others caring; a cure to the poison of indifference brought about by people treading the harder path to make it the path of least resistance.
Not a long time comic reader, just some guy who recently got into Titans and then fell into the DC hole just before turning 20… these videos have been awesome for me.
this is one of my all time favorite videos. I watch it like 2 to 3 times a week and every time I come back I am upset that it still doesn't have 80 billion views
I'm just 2 minutes in but Holy shit. I never new that about Supergirl. I always thought she was just sent to earth to protect Kal-El but her rocket ship got lost, so when she finally arrived Supes is already doing his Superhero-ing stuff and was put on the Kents farm to mature
It's german ! I finally get it know that I started learning it, you end your videos with german ! God, never change you pretentious bastard, this video was absolutely amazing and finally understanding how you end your videos broke me. You're one of my favorite youtubers ever I swear to god.
I like the look of the comic book in what appears to be from about the 1920s. In other stories of Krypton, Kara is older than her cousin, Kal, but because of differing effects of space-time distortions on the way to Earth, Kal arrives at an earlier date and becomes ‘older’. So the 1920s look may be accurate. I wonder whether the artist and author created this on purpose.
And this is why the Super family (specifically Clark and Kara) are the GOAT Superman (Clark Kent) - The last son of a dead planet sent to earth; an alien growing among humans YET became one the most human out of all. Willing to risk his own life to save another. The Symbol of Hope. Supergirl (Kara) - The last daughter of her "planet" being able to endure all this hardship and YET still finding hope for a better tomorrow, hope to inspire, hope to become better. Best ending on a quote than no other than Superman: "Dreams save us. Dreams lift us up and transform us into something better. And on my soul, I swear that until my dream of a world where dignity, honor and justice are the reality we all share, I'll never stop fighting. Ever."
I love all your videos! Supergirl is one of my favorite characters for literally every reason you mentioned. I am also curious about what your thoughts are on the new Superman show; so far I really like it, and I think it is a very true story to the Superman mythos!
I love this comic so much, I just remember I wanted the full volume when was release and forget to look for it until today because of this video (just buy it now), this is easily one of my favorites if not the most favorite of all Supergirl stories, absolutely love the artwork, the story and the characters, easily my favorite version of Kara Zor El, hope James Gunn and his crew respect this comic with the adaptation and hope does a good job, as long they adapt it well and not changing into some agenda driving political pile of crap like Marvel and DC are turning all their properties. This is a great story about Grief, broken people, acceptance, and more important FORGIVENESS, a story that wear its heart in it's sleeve with proud, the art of Bilquis Evely with the magnificent colors of Matheus Lopes just pop the beauty of each panel so much, I really hope the adaptation capture all that and people finally get a GOOD Supergirl live action adaptation that live up to it's potential....although I would have love to see this story rather been made in animation, something like SPIDERVERSE, it would be one if not the most beautiful animated film ever.
I know that you usually just cover DC content but I think you'll really like Emesis Blue and can make a pretty long video on it, explaining the characters pinpoint
I really appreciate all the videos you have made. I found your channel last week and have been binge watching all of them. Though I am surprised that you haven't made a video on the Batman: The Brave and the Bold. I think there are few episodes that are really well done even though the feel of the episodes are more campy and more silver/golden age comics.
I am old. I long outgrew my angst-ridden teenager phase. Old and tired of the grit and cynicism that we pass off as depth. In reality as in fiction, there is beauty in seeing people do the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do. These are the heroes that stand the tests of time because they withstood the tests in their own lives.
I wonder if Implicity Prententious will make a video on Martian Manhunter's origin or the Viking Prince comparison made in JLA in relation to learning to be human
I hate to be that guy, but is it okay for you to use that interview? Do you need to get permission to use it, or can all RU-vid videos be reused? I mean, you did say where it's from, but is that enough?
