Just who in the world are the Basques and how did they manage to get their collective revenge on Spain after hundreds of years? Today we will be discussing the genesis and evolution of the Basque nation, how they came to be under the rule of various European powers, how they came to attain a recognizable status worldwide and how they fell into infamy in recent times.
Let me know your thoughts on the Basque peoples and their involvement in various events in world history, including those in Latin America. Thanks for watching!

@igorzkoppt
@igorzkoppt 6 лет назад
The Basque country (it's called that way in Spanish and in French) was originally much larger: Gascony (essentially the south-west of France) comes from Vascony - Vasque and Basque is actually the same thing. The separation of Gascony from the rest of the Basque country occured centuries ago, but point is, it covered an area much larger than depicted here originally. The Gascony was assimilated and the Gascon language took over the Basque language (people didn't speak French there until relatively recently).

Here's some info about Gascony and how it's name evolved from the Ducate of Vascony, Wascony and eventually Gascoigne/Gascuña or Gascony: es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gascu%C3%B1a And more info on pre-Roman Aquitanian language and it's relation to Basque language: es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idioma_aquitano Both Castilian/Spanish and Gascon languages basically evolved from the roman dialects spoken by Basques on both sides of the Pyrenees

You missed a fascinating twist, which helps to understand how the Basques managed to keep their culture, and why autonomy is the mahjor goal, not necessarily independence. In the Castilian-dominated Spanish kingdom the Basques were seen as the most loyal allies of the king. They were allowed to govern themselves after their own fashion. The Spanish kings swore under the tree of Guernica to respect their liberties. This changed in the 19th century, because the Basques stayed loyal to the losing side in the war of succession. For dictator Franco the traditional Basque liberties were a threat to his central control. The Basque fight is also a fight to get back the traditional autonomy they had during previous centuries.

A place in the US with an interesting Basque connection is Florida, and it is a recent one. There used to be several locations along the peninsula from Miami area up to the Ocala area with facilities to watch the game of Jai-Alai. Which was dubbed the world's fastest ball game (or something to that effect). If you've never hear of it, check it out, super interesting. I think these establishments were happening places in the 70's up to early 90's with gambling involved, but I'm not sure I haven't researched it. Jai-Alai was popular during the period of greyhound racing which has also died out. To my knowledge, outside of the Basque country, Florida was the only other place where this Basque sport was popular. Also, I noticed the large proportion of Basque descendents in Colombia. If you open up a phone book from Medellín (if you can find one in this day in age) you will notice A LOT of Basque last names. A dead giveaway of a Basque last name is if it ends in aga (Chavarriaga, Saldarriaga, Arriaga, and so on). Colombia seems to have received a sizable portion of Basque immigrants who left Europe in the late 1800's. Which implies they actually have Basque ancestry.

@ RA you clearly don't know what you're talking about. The North of Navarre (from Pamplona/Iruñea onwards) has a strong Basque cultural identity and Basque is still spoken in that area. In Roman times, basically the whole of Navarre was known as Vascony, including some parts of NW Aragon, and N of La Rioja. es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasconia The pre-roman tribes in Biscay and Guipuzcoa (autrigonians, caristians and vardulians) were transitional tribes of unkown degree of admixture in between the Celtic and Basque cultural ranges. The Kingdom of Navarra has its foundation on the Vascon or Basque nation strugling in between the dominance of the Emirate of Cordoba and the frankish Carolingian Empire, Basque language and culture being a basic substrate of the Kingdom's origins. Up untill the Castillian conquest of the Kingdom of Navarre in the begining of the 16th century, Basque was spoken in more than 2/3 of the Navarran territory, starting a rapid decline after the conquest.

I read that much Basque DNA is in England, Scotland, and Wales. My mother's family is from Jersey which was populated by Normans of William's army, who wedded the daughters mostly of Anglo-Norman landlords from the main island of England. However, just before William's conquest, many Basques were displaced from their/our land. It appears that they/we joined William's warhost. My family's name from Jersey originated as a Basque town called "Pinel de Bray". BBC sponsored a DNA analysis of all of the male Pinels still residin in Jersey and found the male DNA to be consistently Basque, which means that my mother's father's DNA, in spite of his Anglo/Norman traditional heritage, was Basque. After we came to America the name became "Pennell". Members of the family had a wooden-shipyard in Maine, that gave parties attended by US president and celebrities of movin pictures.

I learned in that book among other things, the Jesuit order was started by Ignatius Loyola, or Ignazio Loiolakoa, and Francis Xavier were Basque. It's my understanding that my surname Ogas is of Basque origin, as well as my grandmother's maiden name of Uranga.
