I never forgot this speech scene in the movie. It takes incredible courage to stand up in the company of both your friends and your detractors and say what’s on your mind coming from your heart.
This scene right here, it made Revenge of the Nerds stand apart from other college movies. The film may have been a comedy with gross-out elements to it, but it had an agenda and a heart to it. Self acceptance is the key to maturity, and Jeff Kanew the director and the other actors were serious about it’s underlying message. They cared, they put their hearts into it and meant what they said.
John Goodman's performance is underrated and should have been nominated for an oscar. I know that sounds stupid but that speech in the locker room was awesome performance
Aren’t these the same “nerds” that filmed women in the shower without the women’s consent? Yeah..,you go on be proud of being a nerd. But the jocks, who’s only “crime” were just being assholes. NEVER COMMITTED AN ILLEGAL CRIME! Fuck the woke crowd, but this movie isn’t anything worth being “proud” of! 😂😂😂😂 Go on NERD...ask ANY women if she wouldn’t mind being filmed in the shower without her knowing!!! I dare you! So fuck off nerd. I’d rather be a jock in this weird universe.
Look at their reactions. Almost all the jocks and the coach continue to look at the nerds with disgust... except for Stan. You can tell he's actually thinking about what he's done and how it cost him Betty. There's a sense of remorse, and even a little bit of shame there. It's a moment of real acting in a movie where you wouldn't expect to see that kind of thing on a deep level.
Kind of reminds me of the Emilio Estavez character in ‘The Breakfast Club’. A jock assaults and humiliated an underclass man and then later is deeply humiliated himself for what he did.
'Those bastards trashed our house" Ogre looks away in embarrassment and shame, Stan looks like a guilty toddler who drew on the wall. Burk on the hand smirks proudly.
yes and no. im not sure narcissist bullies can deal with shame emotion. they appear to short circuit. they are special aka retarded and must be managed as such. retarded: meaning they've just been getting advice from the wrong people.
You know that Anthony Edwards (Gilbert Lowe) must've been freezing his butt off. You can see and hear it. Not only was he wet but cold too. I'd say this was the best scene out of the film. When I was in school back in the 80s and 90s, I was considered a nerd. Not a smart one but a nerd nonetheless. I got picked on a lot because of the way I looked and dressed and I was in special education classes all my life so that didn't help either.
Fantastic movie ending. I had to watch this again because I felt Freddie Mercury was a bit of a nerd himself. Yet, what a hero! And this movie captures one of the best songs to come from Queen and Freddie's genius. And yes -- just saw the movie "Bohemian Rhapsody" and am just completely in awe about Mercury. Love the choice of music here. Indeed... I am a nerd. And I identify with these guys despite the dramatic antics.
Stan's expression of guilt (2:15) has a backstory that didn't make it to the final cut. In the original storyline, Stan tried to conceal a secret from the AlphaBeta fraternity; he had a brother who was a nerd. If you've seen the DVD extras and deleted scenes, you'll know this. There's a scene where Stan's brother calls to ask him a favor; to which Stan quickly reprimanded him and told him never to.call back again. If I have the exact details wrong, forgive me but you get to.the point. It all comes full circle in Nerds Part 3 where Stan says he always wanted to pursue other things (reading books, getting good grades) but was forced by his parents to achieve more superficial pursuit; being popular and choosing an effective venue to feed that popularity, sports. A fun little trivia for all ROTN lovers like me.
I remember reading somewhere that in the original script Stan was supposed to be a closet Nerd and his expression was that of shame and guilt. In Nerds 3 or 4 Stand finally comes out as always having been a Nerd and embraces it
I know this is just a movie but being a guy who grew up wearing glasses. This movie was really important. When Lewis makes his speech it reminds me of all those times i was put down and made fun of
The original sub plot for Stan was very interesting. The sub plot had Stan as a jock, as seen in the movie, but to keep in with his Alpha Beta fraternity brothers, he had to hide the fact that he was actually...a nerd. He would hide in his dorm room wearing his glasses and studying, only to be dragged to frat parties and get drunk. Falling behind in his grades, he was paying nerds to secretly tutor him and to keep his true nature a secret. It's also why he was adamant in kicking the nerds out of their dorm so as to have his own room to hide his glasses ant text books. The Pep Rally scene is really the only subtle indication left of this sub plot. Prior to this, the football coach made his speech to the Alpha Betas about getting redemption after getting their _"asses whipped by a bunch of goddamn nerds."_ Being with his frat boys at the time, Stan had to keep up the image, and trashed the Tri Lambda frat house. Ever wonder why at the Pep Rally, Stan never jumped off the float, picked a fight with the black Lambdas, or fought for his girl, or made a threat to get the nerds? When Betty rushes to Lewis, Danny Bourke is seen on the float in the background gesturing to Stan as if, _"Are you going to let these nerds get away with this?"_ It were the speeches of Gilbert and Lewis, that Stan's true feelings were revealed. When Gilbert and Lewis were talking to the crowd about _"being laughed at and made to feel inferior,"_ Stan was the only Alpha of the main three without a look of anger, frustration or contempt. It was a look of uncertainty and reflection. By the end of the speeches, he had a look of genuine sadness. It wasn't because Betty left him. It was because he wanted to go down there and join them, but knew he never could.
As a young boy my grandpa had a whole wall in his guest bedroom made for vhs movies. I watched revenge of the nerds 1&2 when I used to visit him. He lived right next to a major university and he would drive me by the fraternities at a young age. My older brother was kind of a nerdish guy all through middle and high school . He was in the band and wore glssses. I love these movies so much. I just caught the ending the other week and this speech has been stuck in my head
this MUST happen we as nerds NEED to unite and make it clear that we are all over the world and no matter what is done nor said to us we wont back down we will stand our ground dont we dont follow the jock we dont change to fit in this is who we are we dont hurt others!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its ok to be different as long as you dont hurt others intentionally or unintentionally
Lewis then cheats on Betty in part 2.. then ends up stop being a nerd and married to Betty in part 3 only to become a nerd again. Stan becomes a nerd too and hooks up with a nerd chick.
Bishop Z your comments during mass were well done and well thought of for this day of Mass. Truly you are " The Shepard of the Lord" May this Mass guide us to a better understanding of the gospel and to the future of the church. Amen and congrats on your many years in the church...
I was a nerd skinny child of a minority descent in a small white town. I was bullied by many, and this video is quite realistic if you look at the story. I remember the "star" athletes would bully me, and even one wanted to rough me up, and I remember him stuffing snow down my throat, and then after, he told me "don't move", he didn't want to bully me anymore, but didn't want to let people know that he was embarrassed at his actions. So after I stopped fighting, he stuffed more snow down my throat, and just stood up and walked away, not saying anything. I remember him looking at me afterwards with shame, I felt "well, oh well, that's the way it is". Girls would protect me, the popular ones, which made me kinda laugh "Hey, why are you picking on Shawn, he didn't do anything to you". Yeah, then the bullying kind of lessened. I felt it funny that the girls would feel sorry for me. I felt "hey, I guess I'm gonna be picked on for being skinny asian and very nerdy". I did do things to solve the skinny weak asian: I went to the gym a lot, and in university, its funny that things kinda change: all the jocks in the class became good friends with me, as I was a cool guy, and even though I was weaker in the gym then them, I loved working out and sports, and would never give up: that - any real gym bum or sports fanatic will read as a guy that has a never give up mentality. It also helps that I took a sport more suitable for my physique - martial arts, and got real good at that. In university, with regards to frat parties, I didn't join a frat, as a nerdy engineer. However, I was invited by my greek/white friends to go to frat parties and, yes, clubs that only let white people in (this existed in Canada, it wasn't an open rule of course, this was a while back). I remember several times, some girls made comments like "shouldn't you be in the library" or "you don't look like the type that belongs here". My frat friends would look at me and then the girl, they'd seen in my eyes I didn't take offense, and then go on to say "Hmm, hey, don't judge him by his appearance. Shawn is our friend, he's cool.". I think they then realized that I must be decent as I got public respect, real respect. Also, I remember sitting down at a table, and people having a smirk, and about to say shit, then a couple friends (who were tall, handsome and strong europeans) say to the table "Hey, everyone met our friend Shawn? Yeah, he's our buddy, he comes in to this club, I don't give a shit that they don't let asians in here, he came in with us". Then, the table realized something, they realized maybe minorities were cool? I was let in because the guys basically knew the owner, and were well known in the community. It didn't take long for everyone to realize the guy with the glasses was a decent guy, and made more friends. I guess this is what reducing racism is all about. Anyways, I had my own crew: international students - and that was the best, people from all of the world who wanted to have fun, and learn from others. I ended up traveling to asia and living there or 12+ years, until covid forced me back to Canada. Now things have changed a lot. A lot of the racism that existed before doesn't exist now.
Oh man those poor featured extras... "Um, yeah... We some people who look like they get called a spaz or a dork... Okaaaay, PERFECT, you guys will do.. Sooooo, umm, I need you guys to just stand over here and look over here. That'd be great... Greeeeeeat" (I picture Bill Lumbergh as the head of casting)
I know most people think this movie is just a stupid college comedy film and in a lot of ways it is. But by God everybody is so likable and it has such a universal message at this point that I dare those people to watch this again and not see more to it than they first thoughts
The real MVPs? The line of Tri-Lams. They don't move once from the moment they come out. They hold that line between the ABs and the Louis/Gilbert. Same with UN Jefferson. That's bad a$$!
