the difference when adding your own force break is crazy, hope they change the force break for production runs but even then a very nice looking board and not too hard of a fix yourself. nice to see

Hey Alex, I've been wondering for a while: what are your favorite tweaks to the Cherry Nixies switches? Lube + film, only lube, spring swap, or completely standard?
@ImOnMy116
@ImOnMy116 18 дней назад
Just one point of reference, but I feel like I saw him recently run some nixies that were just lubed and spring-swapped (not filmed). Fwiw, it’s all preference imo. I don’t like the stock weight of the springs (too heavy for me), and I enjoyed the ever so slightly more muted sound that came from using poron films (deskeys). Best bet imo is to just test out some switches prepped different ways for yourself!

I think its Sound kinda average for a 320$+ keyboard, even the Dune65 sound better and take less effort to build. The Reverie weight is nice tho

Look great. Sound really not impressive. The sound seems short and flat but not that muted, low pitch but doesn't seems to pop. Kind of clear but not bright enought on the clackiness. It doesn't thock either. $320 is overpriced imo. It'd have more incentive to buy the limited edition. But well... Limited... Kind of hate the fomo on any product tbh Edit: maybe try another switch lol

The board ships by default with a PC plate which will give you a better sound all around in just about any top-mount board, it's kind of a shame they sent Alex the prototype with an alu plate. Due to the design, I think this will be one of those boards where plate and switch decisions will vastly alter the sound profile. Honestly I think it sounded really great once he fixed the forcebreak (which hopefully will be resolved for the gb?), even if the exact sound profile he ended up with is not my particular preference. It sounded good enough for me to know that the board is quite capable and that pairing a PC plate with switches that match my preference will probably sound spot-on Doesn't feel overpriced to me tbh, especially when you consider the amount of CNC'ing involved on that bottom piece and weight. Plus designing in and including a whole separate daughterboard for the USB passthrough But ultimately it's up to you to decide if the board is something you want or not, and that's the wonderful thing about being constantly bombarded with so many choices in this hobby, isn't it
@komikath
@komikath 18 дней назад
@@leftcoastfunk it does come down to preference. what i'm judging is at this clip first and foremost. 2nd, u've said it yourself. its not on your preference and need more adjustment => the current config is not great to begin with and Alex felt that way too. So by that we r already on the same page. I said imo it feel overprice being mid in this demo and i'm not alone. U don't have to try and justify that when there are board that at a lower price range that sound better. Hell for the same price range, dune65 currently sound better in several different config and demo. The usb hub is not new either. nor it is hard to design given the space to do so is abundant. That being said, plate and switch will be u trying to alter the signature sound of the board, if the board is bad enough, u aint be doing much. That's what i'm concerning. But hey, can always foam it up n have it sound nearly the same as most of the $50-$150 line up since that's trending right now i guess.
@leftcoastfunk
@leftcoastfunk 18 дней назад
@@komikath Not entirely sure you read or at least interpreted my post the way I intended if you think we're starting off on the same page regarding the sound. Did you watch the entire video? I think the keyboard sounded great after Alex fixed the forcebreak, as did he (I believe the words he used were "very nice", "pleasant", "way better", and "super happy with the way this sounds now"). Gotta watch to the end :) He's also experienced enough to know it will only get better with a PC plate - which is the default config as shipped Anyway my biggest point was that there's actually a big difference between "the board doesn't sound good" and "it sounds really good, just not quite to my preference". After building my fair share of boards I've learned that if a board CAN sound good, it will be able to sound good after I get my hands on it, even if it's different to match my preference. Maybe that doesn't make sense? Like, I know for a fact I'm not going to use the same switches as Alex did, and I would never have envisioned using an alu plate for this board in the first place anyway - so I know before I even start watching that any version of a build I do WILL sound different than his in some way I don't see how changing plate and switch is "altering the sound signature of the board" so much as it is fine-tuning it to your preference. If that were the case then high-end boards would only come with one plate option and would be pre-built with specific switches. If a board just sounds like crap no matter what, then you're right changing plate or switches probably won't do much. That said I've also had boards that sounded good on video, then when I built them I absolutely hated the sound - then I tried different plate and switch combos and absolutely fell in love. Had nothing to do with the inherent sound signature of the board itself Regardless of all that, you can only take a video demo of a board with a small grain of salt anyway because it is almost guaranteed to sound different to your ears when it's in front of you in your room, on your desk, with your switches in it. In no way did this board sound the kind of bad that makes it a complete write-off Price-wise, maybe Dune sounds better in the right config, maybe not (though I personally find it quite ugly). Maybe the Void sounds better in the right config, maybe not. I've seen reviews for both of those that sounded good, and also some that didn't. So in that respect it's pretty difficult to say one is "better" than the others. They are each so different in their own rights Last but certainly not least if you're elbows deep in this hobby space, there are going to be many boards throughout the years that you buy simply because they speak to you in some way. Be it the sound, the feel, the uniqueness, the rarity, the aesthetics, even just the name...whatever. Regardless of the reason, not ALL boards have to sound like the best keyboard ever made in order to deserve a permanent place in my collection or daily rotation because sound isn't the only reason I have them. All of my boards sound and look and feel VERY different from each other and I love every single one of them so much more because of that, not less. I've never felt like I'm "justifying" anything, because when you collect keyboards you've moved past "I need something to type on". Anything past the first keyboard is something that you don't "need" but rather something you'd just like to have. This goes for any type of collectables, really, so who are we to judge why someone wants to get that specific pair of sneakers or a certain Pokemon card or whatever? If it's something that they like and brings them happiness, then justification becomes meaningless. Sure I have boards at a lower price range that sound amazing. Just like I have boards at a higher price range that sound amazing. Just like I have boards at both lower and higher price ranges that don't really sound as amazing - there are other things I like about them all which ultimately keeps them in my collection Cheers, and thanks (legitimately) for the engaging discussion 🍻

But it's so fun to buy keyboards and then completely forget you bought them and then have a surprise show up at your doorstep randomly one day :) It's like having a secret admirer but it's yourself lol tbh most group buys aren't toooo bad these days. I'm mostly all for them because they allow small designers/studios to get really cool boards out to people where they wouldn't otherwise be able to do so due to the overhead costs involved. We get sooo many more options as consumers because of groupbuys. As long as the runners of the GBs are using reputable vendors who know how to properly manage things and communicate - and are carefully screening their manufacturer for reliability and communication - then I'm down Thankfully though we are seeing more and more in-stock, or semi-stock/pre-order situations going on these days with drastically reduced lead times to customers, even if it's not every sale or vendor that can do it. GB doesn't have to be a huge hurdle if you mix things up between in-stock and gb sales :)
