These videos on reverse circulation are brilliant and pitched at exactly the right level. I know nothing about plumbing but found myself telling a plumber what needed to be done to fix it, which took a bit of convincing. I was able to track down the exact location of the issue prior to him coming and a non return valve was the only feasible option. Like others we’ve had several people here in the past claiming it’s motorised valves and then giving up when that didn’t resolve things. Very happy to have the situation resolved without continually being fobbed off.

Nice video Rodger.Always always ask the customer for as much info as possible before doing any work.. how old is the system?when did this issue start? etc.An hour spent sussing something out before opening up your tool bag is worth a day fitting something that may not solve the problem.

Thanks Roger, the bit at the end about the valve on the cylinder return is an absolute gem! I'm not a heating engineer, but like to understand how things work. When we had a plumber in, to replace our boiler, I asked them what the valve was for and they shrugged and said they didn't know, but best not to touch it! Worrying considering they were registered gas safe! I'm really enjoying this series and look forward to future episodes. Please can you consider explaining the different types of system, gravity fed etc. and Y-Plan?
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 3 года назад
The whole Gas Safe thing is a barrier to entry and a lot of talented and knowledgeable plumbers got fed up with renewing it so they dropped out. Now it has created specialists who fit boilers and don't want to know about the rest of the system. I can't say I blame them because the rest of it is hard work and there is very little money in it compared to the boiler installation.

@@SkillBuilder Totally agree , Ive been fitting central heating systems since the mid eighties after gaining my plumbing craft and advanced craft in domestic heating and gaining experience out on site. I stopped doing gas work in 2015. This is my main problem with gas courses as entry into the trade , it teaches you nothing about what happens after the boiler. A lot of new entrants must be learning this from scratch in customers homes, a frightening prospect. PS i remember reading your articles in installer magazine , i think it was called Rogers pipelines. Always a good read and often involved you ranting about something or other. Those were the days !

I've just had a brand new boiler in a new build house with reverse circulation, it took 4 people 2 weeks to suss out, but once they realised what was wrong it took less than 10 minutes to fix it. This was on a new combi boiler, the radiators were getting warm when the heating was off, and the hot water was running cold throughout the house EXCEPT for the bath taps on the middle floor.

Dam spooky. Last time the plumber was here looking at the issue I have ‘upstairs stat on upstairs rads hot - down stairs stat off downstairs rads warm’ your video was on the same evening. Today the plumber returns and fits a load of non return valves and tonight you cover it again. Like I say spooky.

Roger. I am a complete plumbing novice and I have been suffering from radiators getting warm when the water is on but not the central heating and went out and purchased a motorised valve with the view of replacing the motor first and see if it cured the problem. Before I did that However, I have also been having issues where the central heating has not been coming on even when I turn the thermostat up. I therefore decided to replace the Drayton Digistat SCR in the airing cupboard and so far this seems to have stopped the radiators getting hot when water is on. Have you or your readers ever come across this as a fix? Great channel and please keep up the good work.

Sometimes when the cylinder is calling for heat the water takes the route of least resistance thus leaving the radiators with poor flow. A simple gate valve on the cylinder return can eleveate this issue. I find a bollofix valve can cause noise in the system
@phillipbull3673
@phillipbull3673 3 года назад
Yes yes yes Mr Roger .... lockshield gate valve on the cylinder return and run it all the way back to the boiler ! Would be nice if modern boilers had a cylinder return on the boiler after the pump which would alleviate reverse circulation altogether, thus not needing a non return valve on the heating circuit...
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 3 года назад
I like the idea of a separate cylinder flow (Viessman) so you can run the heating at a lower temperature than the hot water.
@phillipbull3673
@phillipbull3673 3 года назад
@@SkillBuilder how does it regulate the temperature differently to the heating primary flow, are there two heat exchangers in the boiler running at different temperatures?
@mikes4163
@mikes4163 3 года назад
I've given up having DHW and CH running together. The reduced flow on the radiators is problematic and because they cool the water it's harder for the tank to get up to temp - so you can be in this twilight zone for hours. If the boiler is dedicated to DHW it only takes about 30 minutes to top the tank up (our DHW is only on twice a day) and in a reasonably well insulated house it's not a problem being without CH for that long. (I actually run the morning DHW 30 mins before the CH is due, so no problem then anyway - the boiler can run full blast on the CH.) The 3-way valve is wired to just be one way or the other and not use the centre position. This is the second house I've done this and no problems over a combined 10+ years of operation.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 3 года назад
That is good comment. It is easy enough to give the DHW a head start. Personally I would not bother with wiring it for priority.

Had similar problem with BG. Intermittent fault on boiler and “gas fitter” diagnosed sludge build up in system requiring £650 system flush. When I reminded him that the fault was intermittent he still couldn’t grasp what I was saying. So I kicked him out and cancelled the BG monthly scheme. Local gas fitter diagnosed faulty pcb. Sorted!

They get money for every power flush they sell. Everything can be cured with a powerfulsh. My sister had the same thing. Guy came to do the annual service, "You need a powerflush". System was three years old and sealed.

Thank you for the really useful videos. I had reverse circulation on my downstairs radiators. This was resolved my fitting a non- return valve. However the issue now is that when i have both the Heating and Hot water on at the same time, the downstairs radiators are not warming up? Any ideas what it could be? Could it be there is too much resistance because of the non return valve?

Hi. I’m pretty sure the hot water from my boiler enters my cylinder from the 22mm pipe in the bottom of the cylinder and returns it from the 22mm pipe in the middle of the cylinder. Is this possible? Every f&e diagram I look at has it the other way around.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder Год назад
It is just as good and in some ways better because the coldest part of the cylinder and the hottest water means you get greater efficiency. Some say that going in the top with the flow means the top of the cylinder heat faster and you can get away with half a cylinder of really hot water.

2 2 port valves solve this and 2 pumps ?
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 3 месяца назад
I think not, the circulation the wrong way through the heating return won't be closed off by the heating zone valve. Have another look and get back to me if you think it will work. You need a non return valve in the radiator circuit.
@mcphee1888

What if your boiler does not have a motorised valve or a hot water tank but your rads still get warm whilst running hot water?
@effervescence5664
@effervescence5664 3 года назад
Diverter valve in the combination boiler works the same way as a 3 port valve with a cylinder. If they get dirt in them or occasionally lose their way (as is fairly common with some Worchester Bosch models) you'll have the heating flow pipe start to get warm when you run hot water.

Question for you Roger, the move able lever on my motorized 3 way port valve is moving freely with no spring so it doesn't return back to the auto position, in your opinion is it time for drain down & renewal of full valve? Its a siemens DVA3 I think.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 3 года назад
If you turn the power off and it doesn't spring back then it needs to be looked at but if there is power on it you would expect it not to return. If it doesn't move back it may simply have become unhooked.

I'll take a look, the last time I swapped it for new was when it was stuck on heating the hot water, this time its the heating thats getting all the energy all the time. I'll report back my findings! Thanks for the advice

@jordanlamb6102 3 года назад
@@SkillBuilder lever valves are a ball valve not ballofix valve. Ballofix valves are isolation on hot and cold services upto 65 degrees also says on the side of speedfit plastic ones not to be used on heating. Ballofix valves used on heating end up leaking out of the screw. Lockshield, gate valve, lever valve butterfly valve never a ballofix plus unless you use full bore one it will upset the balance of a system
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 3 года назад
@@jordanlamb6102 I take your point completely and maybe I should have used another term instead of ballofix. The idea of the ballofix in this case is to restrict the flow so the full bore is not required. I don't like gate valves because they seize up so a butterfly lever valve where I remove the lever is probably the best option. Oh decisions, decisions.
