Reverse the coding of a variable using SPSS. This technique is useful when you have negatively and positively worded questions on a questionnaire and you need to reverse the coding of the likert scale responses. ASK SPSS Tutorial Series
Alternatively, a much quicker way to reverse-code a variable is to: Transform > Compute Variable then simply deduct the variable from one whole-number above the highest scale-value. So, using a Likert Scale of 1 to 5; one whole-number above 5 is 6; to reverse code, simply compute: 6 - variable name.
This is really helpful thanks. But I have a question. when recode which results to include in the research (in my case) the original one or the recoded ? In my case I had to recode all the items because I rated them from strongly agree to strongly disagree so the highest mean score indicated a negative attitude. so i recoded my items to get a positive mean score but which result shall I insert in my paper?
Hi, Just wondering if I am doing the recode into the same variable do I need to go ahead and change the value labels still?? And do you recommend doing this process first, or would you go ahead and look at your frequencies? Thanks :)
Hi! please may I know if it is necessary to change the value label after recoding, as 1 for strongly disagree to become 1 for strongly agree, likewise 7 for strongly agree to become 7 for strongly disagree ?
main purpose of the reverse coding not to change the lable like strongly agree or strongly disagree .its only change the value like 2,3,4 that is the value of agree or disagree
What are the statistical implications of not reverse coding negatively worded questions in SPSS in terms of the data analysis? Can it negatively affect the determination of statistical significance?
