In this video, I make the coziest lounging robe, an 18th-century wrapper. I completely hand sew this using an 18th-century method of bag lining the garment that makes it extremely fast and easy to sew up! making this the perfect beginner sewing project!
I make mine by just drawing out the shapes directly onto the fabric but if you would prefer a pattern I recommend this

‪@BurnleyandTrowbridge‬ have a full tutorial on how to make this wrapping gown and a big shout out to them for showing so clearly how to do this and making my sewing much easier.

I like that this may be something where I don't have to fight with my sewing machine, which I've had for 20 years but which also routinely outsmarts me. Your garment results are excellent. I shared this link with some like-minded fashion history enthusiasts in the hope that you could get more views, likes, and subscribers, because I enjoy your channel and your content!

One of these made with one side wool and the other side cotton flannel would be wonderfully cozy for the winter 😀

I just finished my first wrapping gown sewn by hand, of course! I make it in cottons for coolness and price. It is summer here in NZ and very hot and humid. It is so comfy!

You know what, I will, but you will be dissapointed by the 1 dollar a yard shot polyester taffeta I'm going to make them out of😆

This one was rather fast despite hand sewing 😊 also I tend to hand sew most of my 18th century things

A great combination of fabrics! I've been considering a house robe for a while, and I keep dithering between pattern/style options... Still undecided, I may just have to make more. :D

Stunning. You've made this look easy. I might use one of the treadle or hand crank machines to speed up the process a bit since I'm really old. Please keep making more videos to inspire us!

The sewing is really easy on this one! The hardest part is figuring out how to cut out the piece

my fellow chronically ill and disabled brothers and sisters, you don't have to cut on the floor if you are new to sewing. a free standing table you can walk/wheel around is ok. I use my kitchen table and move from chair to chair. Yesterday I drafted a whole pair of trousers whilst sitting in bed. I invested in a bamboo laptop/bed desk.it's great for the days when by body literally tells me to fk myself.

I cut on the floor because I have titanium in my back and standing around a table and cutting is a no no 🤷 everyone is different and should do what works for their life/body. Also this wouldn't even fit on my table even though mine seats 10

Thanks! I always try my best to be as clear as possible since I have dyslexia written instructions don't always make sense to me. I just try to present things in a way that I would understand what's going on and hopefully so will others 😅😂

Omg, I'm loving your new wrapper! I've been putting off making a new robe but just not motivated as I'm not thrilled with modern patterns. I will be making a wrapper for myself. Thank u for sharing this😊

OMG That's SOOOOO fabulous. I wish I'd seen this before getting a STUPID simplicity pattern and CUTTING IT OUT (for my husband's birthday present) because this approach would have been waaaaay better and so much nicer for the lush fabric I'm using. UGH!

I'm about to make mine, I have made Hanten's for me and my husband which are lovely and cosy (quilted and linen on the outside and cotton lining). I've wanted a long robe like this for EVER though, and as it happens I have gone for the B&T pattern (even though really i'd be able to amke it myself, but I just want to switch off and use a pattern!).

Dupioni is so luxurious for this gown, I'd love to make one in velvet too, but my first is going to be cotton on both sides :)

Were these worn in the 19th century/Victorian era? I saw something similar to these being worn in the house to relax in by a woman in a show that was based in the Victorian era (the story took place in 1897).
@sewthroughtime
@sewthroughtime Год назад
19th century robes were typically a different shape but at the turn of the century and coming of the edwardian era fairly similar garments start to be worn again

has anyone tried this tutorial? I can't work out how to turn the garment out once stitched. The instructions say to sew right sides together along the cuff and the centre front. then fold garment in half and stitch the side seams and arm seam through all four layers? then turn it out through the neck hole, but when I turn it out the sleeves don't turn together but separate attached by the arm seam and I can not for the life of me figure out what I've done wrong.
