Citroen is famous for building cars that don't fit into conventional moulds. The e-C4, for example, combines traditional five-door hatchback practicality with the style of a coupe SUV, to create an excellent entry-level family car. Then there's the Citroen C5 X plug-in hybrid. It's an interesting cocktail as it mixes shots of estate and saloon car with one part SUV, creating an interesting alternative to a Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake eHybrid or a BMW 330e.
Now Citroen is combining these two genre-bending, but nevertheless appealing, models to create the e-C4 X. Bosses are proudly calling it the first all-electric model to launch in the UK and one that fuses the 'elegant silhouette of a fastback with the modern look of an SUV’.
There are few surprises under the skin as the e-C4 X uses the same mechanicals as the e-C4. So that means it has either a 50kWh battery pack and 154bhp electric motor or a 136bhp motor and a 54kWh battrey. Both have the ability to charge at up to 100kW on a DC rapid charger, meaning a 0-80% rapid charge will take around 30 minutes.
The e-C4 X can travel 222 miles with a full 50kWh battery, Citroen claims - three more miles than the regular e-C4, probably on account of its more slippery shape. Realistically, though, that 222 miles will be more like 200 in everyday driving, and in colder months or on motorway runs around 180 would be likely. The bigger battery and motor are more efficient; together with the extra cells it means the X stretches its official range to 260 miles.
Join Nicola as she takes a close look at the new Citroen e-C4X. Is this on your shortlist? Would you consider a saloon over a more traditional hatchback? Let us know in the comments below.

A lot of car for the money, even by non-EV standards, and probably all the car many families will ever need. I regularly see its hatchback sibling in my locality and they are nice looking cars. Heat pump as standard is a bonus during winter.

I have an E-C4 in exactly the same colour. Despite its low bhp it has no issues overtaking on a country road. Not fast, she says... tell that to the Golf Gti who couldn't shake me on a lively 15 mile dash!! It has really comfortable seats and nice suspension. The biggest plus for me is that it costs just £265/mth on a lease.

I have an ICE C5 Aircross, with the Puretech 1.2 , 130BHP. Cant count the times Ive surprised friends and other road users with its pull. Surprising for the engine. And dont tell me sports mode or eco are ireelevant in this car. There is a marked difference, managed an avg of 44MPG a few times on Eco, although performance dips. Sports mode you definitely feel the car livelier and quicker off the mark, brilliant on the motorway. Well done Citroen. Love them. Will get an electric of theirs one day.
@mikadavies660
@mikadavies660 9 месяцев назад
@HologramJones Whilst I get it... the 1.2ltr ICE is good.... the BEV is so so cheap to run. Previously I had a 2.2 diesel Honda which did around 45 to 50mpg, I used to spend £150/mth on diesel. Now it is just £25/mth on electric!! I have triple checked it, and the bill is itemised.... £25 is a heavy usage month!!
@HologramJones
@HologramJones 9 месяцев назад
@@mikadavies660 yeah some electrics are incredibly cheap to run, there is another channel that deals with the older Ioniq Electric and they only paid £185 in a year to run it. Of course, this requires being clever about tariffs and how as well as when to charge, but still. I would rather have a smaller battery but an efficient one than a massive one that takes ages to charge and be heavier on my bills. I dont drive long distances for a living with the occasional road trip, so I think they are perfect for people like myself.
@mikadavies660
@mikadavies660 9 месяцев назад
@HologramJones In 2014 I had a Renault Kangoo electric. A work van.... Clearly then, range was poor but charging was dreadful. But it drove well. Private cars have all been Mercs... at least a v6 better when it was a v8!! But this E-C4 is really respectable quality. Silent, smooth, comfortable & practical. Efficiency is really reasonable. Charging at home...is without doubt the only way to go!! A full tank for about £7.00 , whilst you sleep.... What isn't good about that. Longer runs (Essex to Leeds)... is a single 30min coffee break. I am never going back to petrol.... However, I like leasing because the technology is changing. And 3 years from now I can see the E-C4 being "old news".... Whilst currently it's a quiet bargain!!

"more practical"? Not without the hatch, not without the hatch.... Apart from that (I would go for the hatch) I like it. I specially like the French and Japanese approach to how equipment versions should be done: instead of making everything you will want an extra, you can simply go for the basic, the Feel, and get pretty much everything you need or go to the shine or shine+ and get everything you might want and not needing to get expensive extras. Most probably, if you get any middle tier Citröen you will be fine. You might miss something you wanted but nothing important enough to make you regret your decision.

Another great review from Nicola. I like the EC4X, if it had a 60kWh usable battery and 150kW charging it’d be awesome. Sadly it’s lumbered with a battery that is too small and charging that is too slow. Come on Stellantis, give us a bespoke EV platform

That's what you get when a car maker isn't truly dedicated to making EV's, and miss the economy of scale. Your request makes sense but would make the Citroën probably £6000 more expensive. And thus unsellable.
@bill_heywood
@bill_heywood 9 месяцев назад
@@David_Polak I’m not convinced. If ever there was a car company perfectly placed to make use of a dedicated BEV platform, it is Stellantis. They own 14 brands, so one BEV platform could have allowed 14 brands to produce credible BEVs and benefit from economies of scale. But no, they are using an ICE platform to produce mediocre EVs across these brands instead, with predictable results

@@bill_heywood the are "just" 4 years behind the market. but they might catch up with their IBIS battery system. the concept is the best on the market (if it would be on the market). don't know if they will find a way to fuck it up or not. but the concept of combining a battery module together with a 3-phase inverter is really great. perfect for scalability, upgradeability, mixing different battery chemistries, 2nd life, reparability. for me, it is clear that i will only buy a battery module based car, which rules out tesla etc. completely. if i buy an EV, then probably a 2nd hand EV. that means i then do not have a battery warranty anymore. if the battery has a defect, it is better to exchange one faulty module for 2000€ than the whole battery for 15.000€

Nice one Nicola, I quite like the new e-C4X and following this review it may well have quietly crept quietly onto my test drive list when I decide to change my car. I do wonder though if Pink Floyd licenced the 'ticking' of the indicators from the track 'Time' from the album Dark Side Of the Moon. If you've not heard it part of it sounds like the... err.... Citroen indicator sound. A decent boot and a pillow like driving feel is quite familiar to me, my car feels like I'm driving around on a mattress, super comfy when your stuck behind a bunch of traffic on a country lane that seems to be the norm these days.

I was looking forward to a new review of this car as it received the updated 54kwh battery with a new drivetrain. But it seems you tested the “old” version with 50kwh. Or does it lose so much you end up with 46?! I truly hope not. And if this is the older version, please follow up with a comparison to the new 54kwh reallife range assessment! I love the looks of this car more than the regular hatch, but i still find the net ranges of most EVs including this one, under par of what i think is worth the transition. So my hopes are on the new drivetrain! Thanks!!

I found in overestimated how much range I really needed. Convinced myself I needed a 300m car. Furthest I drive is my mum's at 100 miles and my dad's (divorced) at 150 miles. Regular trips are a 15m commute. 200 to give leeway for winter ❄️. would have been fine. Sort chargers out number and reliability wise and even longer trips can be done on less precious battery materials.

I have eC4, my first ever Citroen. Probably all round the most comfortable car ever had in regard to my chronic back pain. Cons: Biggest downer is the app, worse than not having one at all on occasions. Really don't like the piano black, within minutes of cleaning it looks filthy again. Stellantis must have the worst winter battery drop off of all makes. Losing well over one third of range with miles per kWh dropping from 5.1 to around 3.7. Living where I do and crossing into Km zone weekly, find the display unnecessarily complicated, verging on dangerous to change. Usually have to pull off motorway to change mph to kph and back safely. Would I have another. Yes. But possibly petrol. 😢 ec4X: I'd say it's a "fastback saloon"

@@rcajavus8141 here the Tesla 3 is from £43000 to £58000 and EC4 £32000 to £ £38000 depending on trim, power etc. If price had been that close I would possibly have nudged towards the Tesla even with lowest trim and even though I don't like the looks. Met a guy who went with Tesla despite disliking the price and the looks. He decided to go for used and spent £few hundred on some professional vinyl detail which really made the car look good. It's maybe an option next time around. The seat and suspension comfort is my biggest deal breaker though. Tied with budgets.

Nice review and a lovely car for the price especially considering that in November 2022 sweeping changes were made to the Car Tax system. These changes mean that from 1 April 2025, electric car drivers will be required to pay for car tax, the amount you pay will depend on the age and original price of your car. Older EVs registered before 1 April 2017 will pay as little as £20 per year from 2025, but electric cars registered after this date will be charged at the standard annual VED rate - based on current figures that would mean an annual rate of £180. However, owners of electric cars with a list price of £40,000 and more will pay the premium rate, which will cost an additional £370 based on today's figures. We all know that EV’s cost more than their ICE counterparts! So be warned you will be taxed for being green and so many electric cars will fall into the higher rate of tax.

Smaller batteries, leave less of an impact on the environment, quicker to charge and lighter on your electric bills. Also, cheaper on the overall cost of the purchase. I have seen somewhere a Citroen exec, mentioning this as a reason for the batteries on the Citroens being relatively small in comparison to others. The reason why was well their Oli concept is keeping to this size of battery. Also they are more efficient, like with the original Hyundai Ioniq Electric (check out Bjorn Nyland's tests of both). As usual, very good foresight from Citroen, thinking ahead, rather than following the crowd. Most people dont live on the motorway, so they dont need massive, heavy batteries and for that even with this car, there is planning your journeys accordingly (however, I agree that infrastructure in the UK is not at the level of European peers, not impossible though).

smaller batteries yes, but lower prices also please. this pile of manure costs 44k euros in Croatia, where Model3 Tesla costs 43k euros brand new...

@@rcajavus8141 Yeah until a Tesla leaves you stranded with a broken battery and no warranty not to mention the shit build quality that gathers water inside the door seals. Yeah Tesla is brilliant. You'll find the the manure there in less than 3 years.

Great EV. Wish they had a nicer cockpit display. It's like retrofit '90s looking. Peugeot get the nice one's I guess.

They’ve obviously copied the styling of a Polestar 2 without the driving performance or the actual hatch!

They copied nothing, just added a sedan boot to their hatch c4

EC4X? You couldn't make it up.

The e-C4X a bit more impracticsl than the e-C4. Why did they make it without a hatch? Why on earth... Oh yes, to make it impractical, to reduce the number of cars they need to produce, maybe? Maybe not? Whoever knows...
