In this video I review a the lead holders in my art supplies. Some are commonly available and a few are not currently being produced, including my favorite a Teledyne Post from the '60s.

All the red lead holders and the yellow Adapto, were manufactured by Koh-I-Noor in Italy. If you disassemble them, you’ll find they all share the same mechanism. The yellow 5616 has the ability to take leads that go from 2 to 3.2 mm, hence the Adapto name. The red lead holder with the lead grade indicator might also be able to take different diameter leads.

Those Faber Castell TKs are awesome, that black Arc-something is a clear Rotring 600 knock-off, and the Staedlers are probably the most popular with pro artists for some reason, although not my fav. Rotring doesn't make a 2 mm 600 which is a pity so I guess the Chinese version just fills a hole in the market.

Rotring did make a 600 lead holder but I believe it's been discontinued for some time. They are still available on ebay and amazon

I own a Rotring 800 2mm, it is absolutely amazing. It has a click advance system like a regular mechanical pencil and not a clutch. I have had it for 10 years. It was discontinued a few years ago and has become even more rare than it was when I purchased it and even then it was sold in Japan for the Japanese market. Thank goodness for the internet!

I like clips just because it tends to stop desk roll. Lost many a pencil to that.

I have a metal lip on my drawing board that holds pencils. Since I keep my drawing desk at a pretty steep angle a clip doesn’t help. But pencils I keep in my backpack I like to have a clip on.

The silver clicky Staedtler might be easily modified to operate like a normal clutch pencil. I have a cheap lead holder that is the clicky type and recently I took the tip off to look at it. When I put the tip back on it was suddenly operating like a normal clutch pencil. I looked down at the table where I had put the tip and there was a little rubber grommet sitting where the tip had been. It had fallen out of the tip. With the tip on I extended the lead, removed the tip, slipped the grommet over the lead and put the tip back on and the clicky operation returned.

I’ll try that. Thanks!

$50 dollars is 100 more then on Alibaba for 5000 units P.s. you like "drop clutch" pencils over "incremental advance" pencils. Both are mechanical lead holder.

I just counted I have more than 100 Clutch pencils in 2.0 mm :D Lots you do not have: No Caren d'Ache (the first ever made), Rotring, BiC Criterium , Pyramid, Faber-Castell have made at least 5 diff. that I own. I prefer with out clip, so it does not annoy my hand.... and I also have a pencil case no need for clip, but also have room for eraser etc.

The sharpeners on lead holder's cups, doesn't have the super sharp razors that common sharpeners have. That's because one a razor doesn't fit in that tiny space, and two, because the less sharp edge will last longer because of the broader angle. That means, that if you sharpen the lead properly, you can still produce a fine sharp tip, like with any sharpener. It just takes longer and it is a different approach.
@ScottDSackett
@ScottDSackett 2 года назад
The sharpener on the Steadler is best used in a pinch, but it is better than nothing. I typically keep a sharpener in my bag, but have been forced to use the one in the cap. I generally like drawing with a blunt pencil, but sometimes they get too blunt.
@greekveteran2715
@greekveteran2715 2 года назад
@@ScottDSackett Yup, the cup sharpener is there to use it in a pinch when you're far from your main sharpener. It's more difficult to use, but with some experience, it can provide better/sharper tips. As for drawing I agree,however super sharp lead point,has it's place too, (for drawing fine details)!!

It may seem like a knock off, but the one that you have, Scott, (the H-1309) is the best type they have; I got 4 of them (2 blacks, 2 silvers). I would not get the H-1305; the quality of that lead holder is a lot lower.

This was an excellent review for those of us completely new to clutch pencils/lead holders. I'm particularly interested in the lightweight Faber-Castell, because I have tendonitis, and quite small hands, so I think a lighter pencil would be more comfortable for me. I've read that it comes in 3.15mm, which interests me because I was wondering if a clutch pencil would work to hold the broken ends of expensive colored pencils, so I don't have to waste them. The leads range from 2.8mm to 4mm, with my 3.0mm (Prismacolor) and 3.3mm (Brutfuner) leads breaking rather frequently. Do you know if one of your lead holders could be used to hold waxy colored pencil leads? Have you ever tested the idea? I was thinking, if I leave a long piece of lead inside the pencil body, the colored pencil lead can't get pushed back inside while I'm coloring with it. What do you think?
@ScottDSackett
@ScottDSackett 2 года назад
Thanks I’m glad you enjoyed it. Since recording this I’ve purchased several Faber-Castell leadholders to replace the one I misplaced. The lightweight makes it very comfortable to hold. It is a little small for my hands. You made me curious so I broke a few color pencil tips and tried it. It seemed to work pretty good. My main problem was getting the small bit in straight, but it worked. Also the lead is thicker and so it kinda stuck out. As someone pointed out, the Super Adapto is made to also hold thicker lead so you may look at those or the larger Faber Castell. Thanks for watching!
@DreamQuillRose
@DreamQuillRose 2 года назад
@@ScottDSackett Thank you so much! Which size did you try, the Faber-Castell 2mm or the 3.15mm? I'm having a hard time finding the 3.15mm in the U.S. Maybe I'll check out this Super Adapto :)
@ScottDSackett
@ScottDSackett 2 года назад
Okay, I tested a few common leadholders. The Koh I Nor superadapto and the Technigraphic both work great. The Staedler Mars also works but not as well. The lead won’t allow the ‘teeth’ to retract. The smaller Faber Castell will NOT work. The teeth don’t open wide enough to grip the color pencils. I would suggest a Koh I Nor Technigraphic, it is a lighter weight than the Superadapto. Scott
