I have 1982 Stelling Bellfower, I bought at Gruhn's in Nashville in 1987. I didn't have the courage to set it up since. Your expert information on this and guitars are invaluable. Keep up the great broadcasts. I love your no BS approach, as well.

I really enjoyed this video. Makes me want to get a Recording King banjo. Not to mention that Recording King and I share the same last name.

I check relief by fretting fret 1 and the fret where the neck joins the body. (u can use a capo.) You can then check the string clearance in the middle of the neck. You just want a wee bit there or can get away with almost none of your frets are nice and level!

JP, I wish you much enjoyment with your Recording King Banjo. I am just getting into banjos, but am at present the caretaker to a 1930's Recording King Roy Smeck guitar with Christian style pickup. She is a piece of history for sure.

Another awesome video Sir. My grandson just purchased a Recording King Dirty' 30s with the mahogany back cover and it's a very nice sounding banjo. For his first banjo, to learn to play, it's a great instrument. I also purchased the RD-328 dreadnought guitar after watching your review and love it too. Keep up the awesome videos.

That sounds a lot like my 93 Stelling dogwood ,that I'm planning on selling soon , I hardly play anymore and don't want the wife getting ripped off when I'm gone , The Elite 75 is a good bright sounding banjo that I like ,enjoyed watching your set up process , banjo players just have to tinker.

I burnished the inside bottom plate of some cheap test violins years. back at the suggestion of an old English Luther's book. It changed the tones noticeably. I wonder what polishing flat the inside of the bottom would do on a banjo? Have you tried backing of the opposing adjusters on the low string side to increase bass tones J.P. ?

I tried light strings on my Huber. Aftere 5 mintes they came off and I went back to GHS 180's. I like bamjps that don't sound metalic. My favorite banjo is one I built myself with a full inch rim with a arch top ring that doesn't quite fit on top with no coridnation rods. It sounds like a flat head. It's sounds as good as my Huber. That one is a little too bright for my taste.

Thanks for the great info J.P. that's very helpful! Banjo newbie here. We saw you at the Centre 200 with Ricky Scaggs back in the fall of 2015,,,,what a show!!! BTW, I'm in the process of buying a used Recording King RK-R80, seems like a really nice banjo. I'm getting it and its OEM hardshell case for $700.00 Canadian, I think that I'm getting a deal, would you agree? I've been a guitarist since the 70s but know absolutely nothing about banjos unfortunately. not sure what to look out for. I am ready to start learning how to play the banjo. I didn't want to start off with a junk banjo so I think that I will be well served by the RK-R80. If you know anything about this model and would like to share your thoughts I would be most appreciative. Thank you!

What are the string-gauges on it? 0.09’s or 0.10’s? I use 0.10’s myself.

The first change I would make is the armrest, I can’t stand metal against my arm, I put a nice custom wood one on my old 70s Alvarez banjo.

I've got an El Degas...it's a start and set up is key. I need to get the high G tuner replaced as it slips under tension. It's a tune to itself and play alone tinkerer.... :(

The combination of mahogany , a tight head and a slightly longer scale makes for a powerful banjo. That low D string thumps in your chest.

Excellent info.I have an RK80 which I need to sort out.The top string slips off the neck.A new Snuffy bridge from Mike Smith I think.Only confusion buddy--I'd have been a tad more specific and pointed out to tighten the bracket hook/J--bolt nuts. Also eg StewMac and others sell banjo pots and by that they're not referring to resonators.

If RK not delivering(bearing in mind a difference in tightness perhaps from summer to winter)it may be an idea to completely disassemble the thing and check the tightness of the tone ring on the rim.If too tight ie not a nice slip fit a tiny amount of wood can be smoothed off to accomplish same.

That is a good sounding banjo seeing as it's still green! Don't tap those RR spikes down; they may be seated with crazy glue. Take out the 'B' spike altogether and just tune the fifth string up to 'B' (while under the 'Bb" spike) when you need to. Fill that spike hole with some ebony dust and glue and it will disappear. Nice banjo!
