The 2016 12 inch Macbook I'm typing this comment on is a terrific machine. Sure, it has its flaws, but I love it so much that I replaced its battery yesterday (a messy operation involving nail polish remover to get rid of that stupid glue Apple puts under the batteries). A few years ago, I could use this machine or a 15 inch Macbook Pro I also own to develop an iOS app. Guess what? Most of the time I worked on that app with the 12 inch Macbook! It was so much more convenient, because of its portability. Sure, compiling and testing the app was significantly slower, but most of the time is spent thinking and typing when you do this kind of work. It's not the kind of computer that could be anyone's main computer, but if you already own another, more powerful one, the 12 inch Macbook is a great mobile companion.

Funny they shipped these back in 2015 with 8GB RAM and either 256GB or 512GB SDD the same basic specs you find in today's M1 and M2 Macs, what are we missing Apple ?
You just gotta look. Depending on your location, local selling platforms might be selling them. I just looked for one and found about 5 models for $200. Might cop the 2016 m3 version for my mom for day to day simple tasks
I still have mine I remember I spilled a drink on the keyboard and they gave me a whole new one because they had a recall on their keyboards I was pretty lucky
I still have my base model 2015 macbook in space grey.. was my first Mac OS device. I knew it was underpowered at the time but that led to me finding a good deal on craigslist. Paid about 700 for an essentially new machine. I hadn't planned on doing much more than web browsing and streaming and the display was a big part of why i chose it. Like you said, I thought of it more like an ipad than a laptop. the thing can barely handle running youtube now but still works great! needs a new battery.. original one is totally shot and I've been meaning to replace it. Never had much trouble with the keyboard either but I take pretty good care of and clean my stuff often. Still love the form factor and like I said, really need to get a new battery get it up and running again as a light duty machine.. Current daily driver is an m3pro Pro.. Also Might send the 12" off to my mom once I get the battery sorted out. She has pretty modest needs and could use a new computer.. recently got her on an iphone as well so I think she'd like being to text from the laptop as well.
I just got mine. on Ebay in near mint condition. Gold just like this one. actually has 16GB RAM and the 512gb ssd. Baremetal Arch Linux is far more lightweight and easier on it. works fine
If they could redo this with m2 or m3 or maybe a new chip m3 lite at the 750 650 for education this could take down the Chromebook if they guaranteed 6 or 7 years of updates and more durability compared to plastic Chromebooks which from experience at my school just fall apart no matter how careful the students
Even the m1 would be fine for that price, but doubt they would go that low, maybe $799 at the lowest? Macbook air 12, 14, and upgrade the 15 to a 16 or 17" would be the perfect lineup
I don’t think they will ever bring back this model so please don’t be getting your hopes up. The 13inch MacBook Air has taken this products place as the thin and portable MacBook.
I am watching this on my 2017 version with the 2nd generation of the keyboard which i actually really like. I bought mine on Facebook marketplace two days ago for 330 USD, it is the 512 gb, I5 version. Battery still lasts between 5 and 7 hours on light/normal use. Try finding a 330 USD new laptop that has the same build quality, screen, trackpad and don't forget the sound that comes out of this thing. a very good budget laptop if you ask me.
And it handles RU-vid and everything just fine? Seen comments elsewhere saying theirs get hot and slow when watching RU-vid Trying to decide between an ultra cheap one of these or an M1 air I know the M1 air is the superior PC but i don’t care about having that processing power
It's not a good look when a "tech reviewer" makes this kind of mistake in 2023. If Unix, Linux and FreeBSD is just a blurry blob in your mind, what's next? Windows is a derivative of OS/2? PalmOS is a derivative of BeOS, or maybe of Psion? The Z80 is a derivative of the 8086? The first Mac used a 6800 processor? All of that is about as correct as "macOS is a derivative of Linux". :)
@@navsofour2892 not sure how much I would agree. BSD is not particularly well known for GUIs. There is xfce and gnome, but the MacOS user interface is something else. I myself like fvwm and even could work with twm, but MacOS X does add a lot.
I know it is bad for video editing but will it be good to simple basic still photos editing ? I have MacBook Air 2017 13 inch and it is good to this job - but this lighter version MacBook is really appealing to me - unfortunately in Poland there are relatively expensive compared to 13 inches air 2015,2017 :(
no fan , tiny logic board that dies randomly. try looking for a replacement motherboard! you will get pages and pages of "spare or repair" Motherboards for these.
@@willygantenkproject still good for office apps, youtube and web browsing, try to get the 1.2GHZ or 1.3GHZ for the price, and inquiry about the history of the computer, was any parts replaced? etc.
you can put a lot of lipstick on a pig. It'll still be a pig. The butterfly keyboard and the horrible lack of ports really, really hits hard on the value of this, and I've not touched on the thermals. I looked around in the UK at CEX, they still seek £300 + for these. I think at $100-$150, these might be worth a punt as a very lightweight portable. But its a punt only, and a whole bunch of other junky stuff have more ports, less rick keyboards, and frankly similar or better spec..
