REVIEW | Esoterica Tobacciana "Stonehaven"

Wish i can get stonehaven and penzance but they are imposible to get, they are mythical almost.

I get all the sweet flavors you described but I also get a vinegar sourness also.

Smoking some 4 year old Stonehaven right now..first open of tin and sugar crystals everywhere. The taste of this tobacco is something every pipe smoker needs to experience at least once

It is flavored w treacle. I called germain and asked them about the topping a few years ago and they told me this

Great review. This is the only esoterica I have tried. Very much enjoyed. Mentioning ,Dunbar, I love VaPers very much, possibly my favorite. Would be really cool to see a “revisited” series on specific blends, such as VaPer, (st James, Dunbar etc.) English and so on. One month, VaPer the next English 🤷🏼‍♂️

Germain's is notorious for their unique topping that definitely contains anise (black licorice). Very similar to the Lakeland sauce that comes on a lot of the SG/G&H tobaccos. Whether it's listed in the details/description or not there is definitely Germain's topping on ALL the Esoterica blends. Some are heavy with it--Blackpool, Woodbridge, Ramsgate--and with some it's more subtle. This topping is what you are tasting in Stonehaven, along with their wonderfully aged tobacco. Stonehaven is fine, but I still favor Penzance and and my personal favorite, Woodbridge.

Really sad when I got my Stonehaven...I couldn't taste a thing. Like smoking air. Same thing that happened to me with Bothy Flake.

Another great review, Bradley. I tried Margate some years ago, and I was so disappointed with it, I never bought another Esoterica blend (Margate was WAY to light of a smoke for me - I like it as robust and with as much nicotine as possible). I will give this a roll if I can find it. ***If anyone is near Bloomington, IN (50 miles south of Indianapolis), home of Indiana University (go Hoosiers), go Briar and Burley. It is easily one of the greatest pipe shops in the nation. They usually stock Esoterica blends - and many other rarities.

Review suggestion: Germain's 1820 flake review aka penzance for europeans. Would be great if you could compare these two blends side by side

I did notice you didn’t hit this one too hard. Don’t blame you. Jar it up and enjoy it long term. Great blend for sure, especially with some age. I probably should stop smoking mine weekly. 😉💨

I have not had Stonehaven. Last May I was able to try most of the offerings from Esoterica at my local B&M but they did not have Stonehaven. Penzance is great, Peacehaven is nice, but my favorite was Dunbar. Wish I could get some more...

Bradley, you apparently did not do any research on this. As a reviewer, you are supposed to say it is horrible, don't give into the hype. Now you've done it, another 1000 people trying to get some. Oh well. I will have to cut back even more on those rare times I take a precious flake and smoke it. I've not found anything quite like Stonehaven. Glad you liked it, and hope you can find some more.

Hi Bradley. Your review prompted me to try a bowl of Germains Dark Flake, which is the UK available equivalent of Stonehaven. There really isn't another tobacco like this.I have to tread cautiously as my metabolism doesn't like Burley and I find it caustic in large doses. The moisture level is deceptive also as the Molasses topping makes it appear more Gawith than it actually is. I reserve it as a treat and change of pace from my beloved Deluxe Navy Rolls. I find it gives the best smoke in a small bowled Falcon. Kind regards John

I understand what you mean by medicinal, actually, because the Bordeaux wines I like best have an ointment-y/medicinal aspect to them, I believe from the overripe fruit. But it's medicinal "in a good way." I wonder about these Esoterica blends. Is it the raw ingredients, or is it their process that makes the quality so high? Probably both, but it seems Esoterica truly transforms their ingredients into something special. In any case, it was fun to enjoy this unobtanium blend vicariously :)
