My fave album of '74. More bonus swill! Tala's Arf! Can't decide what's more amazing: that ' was so odd yet also a newcomers should start here album, or the band(s) he assembled this era and their ability to play FZ's type of music and do it so well. Thanks Pete!

I think ' (with maybe Overnite Sensation & Roxy) was the "gateway drug" to Zappa for many

As an aside, Cool tee shirt Pete. I used to look at that photo from the back of "Rides Again" when listening to the album. I wish they would make a new one before someone passes away. Surely they can come up with a solid 35+ min. of new good music.

Your timing is impeccable Pete. My beloved 3rd pick. How can anyone overlook this guy. He can also play a bicycle! If anyone doesn't believe me, go ask Steve Allen. My Brother is getting this. To me he is hilarious, and has always challenged my reality.

A good program, would be favorite for favorite secret weapon musicians that don't play guitar bass and drums and don't sing. I think that Ruth Underwood was Frank's secret weapon on every album that she played on.

Wonderful musician (aka Ruth Komanoff). Wiki lists no less than 34 FZ albums that feature her. Also some nice work on George Duke's I Love The Blues She Heard My Cry & Liberated Fantasies (proggy fusion). And a couple of great tracks on Billy Cobham's Inner Conflicts ("Nickels And Dimes" & "Arroyo") and Alphonso Johnson's Yesterday's Dreams. She also played with a band called The Hamilton Face Band, a late 60's/early 70's psyche band. Only heard the debut - some well played/pretty weird stuff - well not weird compared to Zappa but...(some of it sounds Zappa-like)... I think Jeff Beck's 'secret weapon' in the early/mid 70's was Max Middleton, and Joe Vitale was Joe Walsh's (besides his drumming/backing vocals - he contributed great flutes & synths)

I have it. Very nice boxset. The blueray quadro is very strange. Joe Travers did a good job again.

One has to kinda stand on your ear for this guy. In my opinion, one of the hardest, deepest players ever.

@@grafixwv5125 I always bought FZ 'selectively' (much easier now that I only buy/download in mp3 format & can buy individual tracks a la carte). There's a lot to like - and a lot to skip - for me personally when it comes to Frank. The stuff where his guitar is prominent will always be at the top of the FZ pile...Also Dweezil has done some really good Zappa work. Given the new Belew/Vai Crimson tour might be interesting to do a future national Vai/Belew/Dweezil Zappa tour...

A top three Zappa album for me. I can never decide on the ranking order. Might have to grab this box set. Thanks for the review, Pete. Appreciated, good sir.

What I like about Frank Zappa, just like Bob Dylan. Frank zappa was never afraid to take risks. While some band and solo artists would stick same formular.

Pete, thanks for the shout out to Ruth. Astonishing musician who gets recognition but not enough in my opinion. According to Barry Anderson's interview with Ahmet Zappa, Frank did a quad mix. Is it his on the Blu-ray?

I feel like Zappa's guitar playing and instrumental music are undeniably great. But I totally understand why people don't care for his songwriting. Zap was like the class clown who didn't know when to stop being a goofball and write something heartfelt.

Zappa Store: "Arguably the most popular album in the Frank Zappa catalog. Apostrophe(‘) has consistently been a best-seller. It was Zappa’s first Gold Record Award in the U.S., peaking at #10 on the Billboard 200 chart. The “Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow” single also made the Billboard Top 100 Hits chart, peaking at #87. The success of Apostrophe(‘) brought along a new awareness for Zappa and through the years, the album has been a go-to for most when discovering his music"...Also comes in a 2LP version + 'expanded' 7" disk. I'm thinking this is for 'hard core' Zappa fans but then again, how many 'real' Zappa fans are not hard core? I'm actually one - the Zappa stuff that I like I LOVE (mostly due to Zappa's guitar) but there's also A LOT of Zappa I can do without (the 'weirder' experimental/orchestral/classical/lyrically puerile stuff). I once roomed with two friends who were Zappa fanatics & basically owned (and constantly listened to) everything he ever recorded. So I have a mild case of PTSD stemming from that when it comes to FZ - but this is a great album & easily one of his best/one of my Zappa favorites. Yet I don't feel the need to own this. I'm sure it's a great package & well worth the $'s (seems to go for about $100/$65 for the vinyl set) if you're one of the aforementioned hard core Zappa-ites. The live stuff is most likely the money here - "That's Ruth"...BTW great James Gang (Joe Walsh) shirt!

For me, Zappa's music covers the entire spectrum from stuff that's absolutely amazing to stuff that's unlistenable dross. His prowess as an instrumentalist is pretty unassailable, but his songwriting leaves a lot to be desired in my book.
