Video Description -
Hi all! Today we are talking about the Godox V1 Round Head Flash/Speedlight. Before I say anything else… I think this is one of the most compelling on camera flash/speedlights on the market right now.
The Godox V1 (AKA Flashpoint Zoom Li-On X R2 from Adorama). This is an interesting thing, I recently looked at the Godox AK-R1 round head accessory kit and the Godox H200R (the round head flash attachment for the Godox AD200) and I am enjoying the whole round head thing.
I recently did an overview/unboxing of the Godox V1 ( • Godox V1 Round Head Sp... ) where I went over some technical specs, what comes in the box, and physical features of the flash.
I have used the Godox V1 for a few weeks and have some final opinions on the flash. In fact, I have some examples at the end of the video on who the Godox V1 flash is best for, and who it’s not a good fit for.
Over all, with a round head speedlight the light has a much softer and appealing look. Speedlights with the fresnel style quality can be a big harsh unless otherwise diffused or bounced. What I have been noticing is that I take much less effort to make the light work for me in practice. Your results may vary based on the photography you are doing, but when looking into any of these flashes I look to what I use it for and what I imagine the general user might use it for.
I like the compatibility with the Godox AK-R1 round head flash kit.
I like the quality of light and how easy it is to achieve excellent results.
I like the way it can interface with my cameras TTL information.
I like the compatibility with the Godox ecosystem of flashes and triggers like the Godox XPro.
I don’t like the lack of continuity between battery types with Godox - but that's not as much of a comment on the speedlight as it is Godox as a whole.
And you have a bit of a tradeoff with the round head and the power output and distance that the flash is effective in.
Probably most annoyingly, with one attempt that Godox had made trying to make the physical button layout easier, they built in an ergonomics problem - which I go over in the video.
Compared to flashes in its weight class, it is an answer to the Profoto A1, which this does not directly compare to... but it is rather a more affordable interpretation thereof at around 1/5 the price. But there are no round head flashes/speedlights in this $260 price range - so not much to talk about there. As far as regular speedlights, we can look at the Canon Speedlight 600EX II-RT ($470) as a name brand example and the Godox V860ii ($160) as a comparable Godox model. Sidse note - I think spending the money on the name brand doesn't make sense when looking at the functionality.
Long story short, I think this flash is an excellent in this price range. It makes sense among the Godox line of flashes, and when compared to other name brands, it is very strong competitor based on function when considering price.
Full disclosure - my partners Fotopal/Eachshot sent this flash to me for review. They are a retailer of some products I already own and they liked the way I did some reviews on products I purchased with my money. They sent me this flash for review - but my comments and feelings on this product are entirely my own. And this uncompromised approach to reviews is and will always continue to be my fundamental requirement wen working with sponsors of any kind.

I appreciate your honest presentation. Simplicity is the key because you have to be comfortable with yourself before your art really shines. The mystery of not knowing is left to being creative without worrying about machines. Years of shooting film with teach you to use your mind's eye. Digital can fool people if they choose to buy lots of stuff which never creates art or the artist. I think you are a brilliant young man. Godox should give you a big bonus or camera at least

I can confirm the overheating issue (in summer) and the event aptitude. The wheel and hot shoe part seem cheap and flimsy, but otherwise, the V1 is GREAT. The locking system is fantastic, the modelling light I use for in between video and the battery blows my mind. Yes, it is a bit weak, but I shoot events at high ISO anyway, for the ambience, so the output is very good. I’m just afraid it will fail without warning some day, so I might consider purchasing a second unit

Picked this up recently, don’t have the same forehead issues but that may be more to do with the ergonomics of my camera or yours. However, this is a great upgrade to a traditional speed light, extremely versatile much softer light and the accessory kit is a powerful reason why you buy it. Good job Godox, I have an AD200 too and for more power this is perfect but for general use this is perfect.

Thanks for the video. I have doubts about the V1, for Nikon, just bought. I can't get the option of the three lines to appear in the zoom, I can change to any value of Zoom with the wheel, but never the lines. In the Xpro when changing the zoom value it is not transmitted to the V1. I think that if I don't see the stripes I can't transmit it. Is it a fault of my V1, of the Xpro? Am I missing something while driving? If someone can help me with this, in case I have to return it. Thank you so much!

I liked my 685's until this came around and finally purchased this. Great for dark shooting as it has a focus assist, so the camera is not hunting and missing those shots. Now, I'm not sure why but this V1 will not auto power off, when the camera is turned off, while my other Godox flashes would. Checked all the settings but doesn't seem to have a sleep mode. Hopefully they can update firmware for this eventually.

@angelisone
@angelisone 4 года назад
If the V1 has the ATG Auto2 HV port socket, no overheating & no shutdown, then it will be considered a fine speedlight. The major plus of the Nissin MG80Pro is no shutdown & no overheating. But has no Auto2 & no HV port. And the drawback is priced in close to Canon 600EX II-RT & Nikon SB-5000.
@martindevlin6747
@martindevlin6747 4 года назад
ref your comments re overheating, the flash operates on an output count and not on a thermal sensor, switching the flash off and on again resets the count and allows you to continue shooting. By comparison to Pentax flash guns (I shoot Pentax) I can buy two Godox V1's for the price of one Pentax 54 gn unit add €70 and I have a remote control unit to boot. The accessory kit has the potential to open up a whole range of possibilities for anyone wishing to expand the possibilities of flash photography.

In this product, godox eliminated GN number and instead directly provided its power output, I guess it is 72watts or something printed on top of its box. I had seen it in the store, while I was buying much cheaper manual slave godox flash for my rear light to bring gel colors rim light effect on portrait shoot. I avoided expensive flash and went purposely for a manual one.

@SeeItLoud
@SeeItLoud 3 года назад
Hey there Jon, thanks for reaching out! I definetly think that the V1 is going to be great for weddings or any events really... short of having an external strobe with light modifiers... the V1 fills an important role with mobility while still have some options for modifications based on your application. Hi there Romie, I have heard that when you are close to the flash, that short distance can cause issues with the Godox flashes and wireless triggers. Hi there Gaurang, glad I could validate the decision you had already made 😃 And I didn’t know that about Adorama, I’ll have to make note. The roundhead does NOT create a softer light it spreads the light more evenly which is nice for more coverage in modifiers but do not confuse one thing we the other. Also the LED is more of a focus light than modeling because this does NOT at all reflect how the flash light is going to show on the subject

How do you know it doesn't have the distance factor?
@SeeItLoud
@SeeItLoud 4 года назад
Hi Pete, the reason I say that is because of the diffusion built into the flash. The round head emits light less directly than a standard rectangular flash head. I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing - it’s what makes the V1 an awesome flash giving great results without having to fuss with it that much.
@SeeItLoud
@SeeItLoud 4 года назад
If your question was more along the lines of what tests I used to determine that... I did not do structured tests, but it became apparent during some of my test shoots. Specifically, I did an indoor event and attempted some candid shots from across the room and the falloff of light was pretty severe at distances that say... a v860ii would be fine working with.

I’d buy GODOX flashes if I didn’t already have $1800.00 in my 4 Nikon sb700’s, Phottix Oden11 radio trigger system with a transmitter, 3 receivers, 32 AAA Eneloop batteries. I really want the GODOX ad200 Pro, but I’ll lose my butt selling off my current gear. So, ...... 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

Did it need TWO seconds to START UP? Have I seen that right? At 4:31? And, just for you multipractic, photography is not just a hobby, not for most that will buy V1.

I’d say it takes that long to boot up, it hasn’t been problematic for me, however. But anytime you have to turn stuff off and on a lot... those 2 seconds can add up.

Haha definetly know the feeling - ya I was a little ham fisted here but I have UV filters on all my lenses so the expensive glass is always safe from minor scratches or anything like that. You can rest assured I do my best to protect the expensive stuff from my ample clumsiness

I disagree with one of your points - If you're doing a lot of or all off camera flash, this is not for you. I think that's who it's for mainly.

Hey there NEO, my main contention is that the benefit to ease of getting high quality results with the round head are most achieved when riding on camera. When the flash is off camera, it’s still just as easy to use, but the results become very comparable to any other flash... so because it’s $100 more than the v860ii - I would recommend against this flash and say just get a cheaper flash. And if you want to mainly do off camera flash... you have the AD200 for just a little bit more. Granted you’d still need a way to trigger it so it would be more expensive... maybe $350 total for ad200 + flash. But I’m willing to have my mind changed and am interested in hearing your point of view - what about the V1 makes it best for off-camera flash?

Agree with you, Neo. I think if you're going off body with a speedlight, being able to use the AK-R1 kit instead of a much more expensive kit like the Magmod is a benefit. I hear what Kyle is saying about quality of light but depending on the modifiers someone wants to use I don't think you really come out ahead by going for a cheaper flash.
