Today I am going to do my first review of the Grayl Geopress Water Purifier bottle. We bought this bottle five months ago and, I wanted to do a review because before we bought it, we had a lot of questions and were not sure if it would really work and allow you to filter and purify water while traveling. And these bottles are not cheap.
In theory, it sounds great. With this bottle, you can filter water anywhere and always have drinking water - without the need to constantly buy water and carry it home from the supermarket.
Since we bought it, we have used and tested it it for several months in Italy and Brazil. So I think I am in a good position to tell you whether the Grayl Geopress water filter bottle is a good travel gadget for minimalist travellers -or if the money is better invested in another water filter.

Thanks for going into how to use it. I bought one and never noticed the fill line or the arrow on the cap. Really good review!

Thanks for explaining the need to loosen the top cap. It works faster when pushing the plunger down and will help to avoid a brain aneurism . Also you should pre-soak the filter itself for about 10 minuets. Merci pour votre avis!

There are so many different opinions about filtering (hotel) tap water. But I am like you, I am extremely sensitive towards chlorine etc. I was able to buy a reduced Ultra Grayl because I am often traveling from Germany to the US and I really have a problem with the American tap water. Plus I dislike to use the versions with a straw, after a while it starts to smell... So I think the Grayl will do a good job!

Well in Canada that bottle cost $139 in Canada on Amazon it cost you that much and that’s just for the water bottle and pieces itself by each individual piece the filter itself cost $50 in Canada I looked it up on Amazon like it’s totally ridiculous but a lot of people say it’s worth it

24 ounce bottle is better design than 16 ounce. I costed it out based on price of new filter and it came out the same per ounce as 5 gal bottle delivered to house, and much cheaper than buying 16 ounce bottles, especially at airports. Also, not good with water with tannins.

The question I see from most, Is it worth it. Well the real question is, is it worth the cost not to get sick? Also with the cost of a water bottle from $2-4 it will pay off in the end. The other plus is less plastics out there 🙂
@MaggiFuchs
@MaggiFuchs 2 года назад
Totally agree about the plastic and the health aspect. Obviuosly there is no proof if their claim of filtering all those things is 100% true, but at least I never had any problems after drinking the filtered water - so for me, this is absolutely worth the investment. :)

I have this same one. Taking it to west Africa but now looking for a pitcher set up. I usually boil the water first then filter and am now looking at a zero water pitcher as best option to remove particulate.
@MaggiFuchs

I know some people bring coffee filters to remove the biggest solid particles to keep the filter clean longer.

Nice video. The end part was a little confusing though. You said there was a smaller version and then finished by saying you wished there was a smaller version. I'm deciding which to buy. That one really is big and half a liter I think it a fair amount of water. I wish I could know before but I think I might be happier with the ultrapress and a spare container or two.
@MaggiFuchs
@MaggiFuchs Год назад
Sorry about that. 😅 By the time I made the video, they made a smaller version, but it had a different, less practical lid without the extra opening. However, I believe in since then they are making the smaller version with the same lid I have. Overall, I still wish the whole thing was a little less „bulky“, that’s probably the word I should have used, but it still serves us well on many trips, so we are still very happy with it. :)
@rizipt
@rizipt Год назад
@@MaggiFuchs Makes perfect sense. Yeah the bulk is the part I don't like, the weight doesn't matter. I think I'll get the small one because it will feel better in the hand. Thank you.

You may want to try the b-Free by Katadyn - super light weight and travels nicely.
@MaggiFuchs
@MaggiFuchs Год назад
Hi! I have been looking at the Katadyn filter before, but it’s just a filter and not a purifier. Since I mainly use it for tap water, I really like that the Grayl removes everything (heavy metals, chlorine, etc.) and “neutralizes” the taste of water. I believe the Katadyn can’t do that?
@goingawayguide
@goingawayguide Год назад
@@MaggiFuchs @Maggi Fuchs the Grayl removes chemicals like chlorine; the Katadyn and other filters ike it remove the things most risky in the backcountry - protazoa, bacteria, and some viruses (some filters make no claims about viruses) - since that is the main use, chlorine isn't really an issue hiking. I think the main downside to the Grayl is its use is for just 300 L, the Katadyn is 1000 L - there are cheaper options that are lightweight, especially when survival is on the line and you need water 5 miles from your car. For you, I think what you chose is a good option! I take the BeFree more for weight since I already have one, extra filters, and I can toss in my suitcase when traveling abroad.
@goingawayguide
@goingawayguide Год назад
also, if you're looking at the chemicals, a lighterweight option is RapidPure (a company out of Boulder, CO) their filters attach to a straw in your water bottle and they remove chemicals too (so purify); the filters work via electroadsorption, removing bacteria, parasites, viruses, parasites, chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides, and microplastics, as well as filtering out sediment. Each filter is good for 100 L; probably because they're lighter weight than the grayl (and different technology). I haven't used one yet, but a few friends started using them when they travel, so I have it on my list to check out!

Maybe use a Millbank bag first to prefilter and extend life? Then the smaller Grayl becomes more viable for me, decanting into a bladder.
@MaggiFuchs
@MaggiFuchs Год назад
I personally only filter tap water while traveling, and so far, I am quite happy with the life of the filter. However, I heard of a few people that they prefilter dirty water with coffee filters before they put it in the bottle to extend the life of the filter.
@teresianordenling

Would maybe a Katadyn BeFree filter be a better choice for you considering the lightweight and compact features? Ps. Love your packing/gear videos!
@MaggiFuchs
@MaggiFuchs Год назад
Hi Teresia. Thanks for the suggestion. I have been considering the Katadyn Filter in the past, but I ended up choosing the Grayl bottle because it also purifies water. I mainly use it to filter tap water, and I really wanted it go get rid of all the chorine and other things that a filter would not do. Have you used a Katadyn filter while traveling? What was your experience?
@Mram1031
@Mram1031 11 месяцев назад
Katadyn Is only a Filter while Grayl is a filter AND a Purifier. They are not apples to apples comparison.

Thanks so much for your review -- super helpful! One question in case you're still keeping an eye on this thread... can you use the bottle without the filter portion, in places where you don't need to filter the water??
@MaggiFuchs
@MaggiFuchs Год назад
Hi! No, I don’t think you can use it without the filter portion, because I believe the lid would not fit on the outer shell, it slides into the filtered part… 🤔 But I personally just reuse Coca Cola bottles or anything I get while traveling when I don’t need to filter my water. I find them much more lightweight and I don’t have the problem that I need to clean them thoroughly after a while. I just grab another one. :)

you can get a one way valve from grayl so you can put soda and other stuff in the top without ruining your filter, which you still need attached
@Lee_Proffit
@Lee_Proffit Месяц назад
If you are sure that the water is totally safe, you can just fill the Grayl via the outlet on the top. The filter has a one way valve so leaving it in place is not a problem (just adds a bit more weight)

Can I drink it like a cup by just opening the top? I don't like using the straw thing if that makes sense. Or do you have to drink it by the straw to get the filtered water?
@MaggiFuchs
@MaggiFuchs 6 месяцев назад
There is no straw in this system. So yes, you could screw off the whole top and drink from the inner „cup“ (the outer one is used for the dirty water). But drinking from the opening is not so bad either. Since the water is already filtered by pressing, it‘s like drinking from a waterbottle.

I don‘t know how more I could test a bottle like this than traveling with it full time for months in countries where you cant drink tap water like Italy or Brazil. That‘s the best test that I can offer, since I am no chemist. :) (Edited for Typo)

Ah, and in case you are interested: In the last 8 months since I published that video, I still travel full-time, brought the bottle with me to many more countries and it still seems to be working fine. At least I drink a lot of tap water and the purifier (not filter) seems to be working fine since I did not catch any funky diseases. :)
