REVIEW: Has my opinion changed on the MEAN GIRLS musical? | Savoy Theatre, West End

I've been fairly open with my opinion on the Mean Girls musical but I always said I wanted to wait to judge the musical live. Now that it has opened at the Savoy Theatre in London, I finally went to see it. Has my opinion changed on the show with the changes they've made since Broadway?

So one of the things I really loved about the Broadway version of Mean Girls was that all of the characters had their own genre of music that they sing to Cady's version of music was Lion King inspired. And Asha became more plastic her songs started to sound like everyone else's. And there's a moment where she's being vulnerable with Aaron that the African inspired music comes up again. And even in the and during I See Stars her song was very well Blended between her original sound and with everyone else. Janice was a lot more Punk and Damian was the classic Broadway. When it comes to the Plastics Karen's Melodies were very small and subtle while Gretchen's was typically fast paced when with the Plastics but on her own her songs were slower and meek. And I feel like that represents her frantically trying to win Regina's approval but on her own she was very sad and I could express her pain. Regina's songs were very seductive and almost snake like.

I can thank the mean girls musical for giving us Renee Rapp and I think that makes it worthwhile

I agreed with a lot of what you said, I feel like it's a three star show with a five star cast. The cast elevate this show incredibly. I saw this quite early in the run and there was a great energy and enthusiasm from the audience which improved the experience as well (even if I didn't always find something as funny as the rest of the audience did!)

Was interested to hear your thoughts on this, I'd been really looking forward to seeing Mean Girls and I enjoyed it but nowhere near as much as I expected to and probably wouldn't rush back. Probably not helped that I'd come straight from seeing Hello Dolly which I loved. Also agree about the price of programmes, we struggled to even find the price listed anywhere at Mean Girls! Also we've been to about 4 touring shows recently where they had sold out of programmes which was disappointing.

re your programmes video - Newcastle Theatre Royal (which get all the big touring productions) produces its own programmes for each productions and they range between £4 - £8. I often get these rather than the £12-£15 glossy touring brochure. I dont know if other regional touring venues do this?

So did enjoy it. I think agree with what's been said about it not being that sincere. Like Damien is great and he's funny but there isn't anything else to him apart from being either inferred or confirmed to be gay and as i went on I was feeling conflicted about the Karen characters, like could she be ableist in the way these portrait as being stupid, like i know she's playing into a 'dumb popular girl' troupe but still with some of the these she said you could associate with being dyslexic or something else.

Yeah but the thing with all of these is that they're all criticisms that can be levied to the film too. They're all valid and come from the fact that all of the characters fit a certain stereotype more than a real people.

Couldn’t agree more. I was so excited to watch it. Went with my heart fully open. I didn’t like a lot of the music change and cuts. Roar and stop should have been kept, that’s all.

It Roars is still in it? It was only cut from the film, the stage show still has it. Unless you're talking about a different song?

@@EllieTalksTheatre it was completely changed and it sounds like a new song. I left feeling like I should have like it more. 😭
