I am not surprised to hear that these are excellent performances. This orchestra is the latest incarnation of the one with which Skrowaczewski recorded his exceptional Bruckner cycle and still has a number of players from that era. Incidentally, Inkinen will be wrapping up his time as Chief Conductor after the 2024-25 season.
Better than Dohanyi/Cleveland? I once flew to Severance Hall in Cleveland in the 90's from San Francisco just because they had this on the schedule and I wanted to hear them do it. People though I was out of my mind in Cleveland when I told them. They knew of no one who flew from San Francisco to Cleveland in Novemeber on vacation. I loved it. Fall foliage and all that.
I guess I would be more of a line guy, were I of any appreciable talent, so I find the timpani use throughout his recordings in this series exceptional. Reminds me of the timpani use in Jarvi's smokin' Mendelssohn series with the Tonhalle just issued.
6:10 Hopefully not: they could still record a disc of the Symphonic Poems. That said these do not lack in great digital recordings: Kuchar, Mackerras, Harnocourt and Rattle all have done magnificent jobs. And the concertos as well! Keep 'hem coming! Edit: and the Czech and American Suites. I'm probably forgetting some other stuff too.
Hello Dave, I have a question. Do you have any composer that you fell frustaded because they composed not so much and you want more! Or do you feel thankful because even If them composed a small group of works, they at least exist and that is it. Thanks for the video Dave!
Great question. If I could start a list: Franck, Janacek (for his orchestral works), Dutilleux. On the other side, there are composers that composed so much that they are ignored by people just not knowing where to start, like Villa-Lobos and Milhaud.
@WyldRage It would be great to have more Duparc. There must have been more in him than those 16 songs, 14 of which are masterpieces. There's too little else and he was too self- critical. If anyone invents a time machine, we need to go back and wrest the 8th from Sibelius ' hands. Of Sullivan, I wish we had Thespis and the Sapphire Necklace.
