Clean air is something we probably don’t think about unless there’s an allergy sufferer in the house, or there’s wildfire smoke hanging over your town. But air purifiers have the ability to scrub pollen, mold, pet dander and dust from the air, in theory making it easier to breathe.
I’ve tried a few air purifiers (most notably I’ve had the opportunity to review nearly all of Dyson’s line, plus Molekule too) and for the most part I find they’ve been able to cut back on my husband’s spring allergy attacks, as well as scrubbing that aforementioned smoke from the home when it starts to seep in.
I recently got the chance to test out a new and perhaps more sculptural air purifier option from LG: the LG PuriCare AeroTower. This tall drink of water is both a fan and a purifier. In this review, I’ll talk about what the device is designed to do, what my experience has been with it and if I can recommend it to you.
Unboxing and set up
This unit is perhaps comically large. It stands almost four feet tall and weighs in at 27.6 pounds. Though it is huge, LG has clearly gone to a lot of trouble to make it both look chic and to help it blend into a modern space. Its conical shape has a wide base that tapers to a split-V.
The LG AeroTower is supposed to easily cover rooms up to 818 sq. ft.
Getting it unpacked is a challenge, but when it comes to the set up, you really just snap on a base plate (designed to keep the unit from toppling over I presume) and plug it in. There’s a small remote control included in the box.
A filter is included with the tower, and you’ll need to remove it from the plastic and install it into the base of the fan.
What will LG PuriCare AeroTower show you?
The LG PuriCare AeroTower has a small color digital screen that will display:
Overall air quality i.e. “Good, Poor, etc.”
Air Quality reading (PM10/PM2.5/PM1.0)
Fan speed (1-10)
Temperature
UVnano status
There’s also seamless touch controls on the top of the unit that will control power, speed, let you change fan modes and rotation.
Particulate matter:
Particles and allergens aren’t all one size; some spores can be microscopically miniscule while others can be microscopically large. The LG PuriCare AeroTower is designed to detect and capture three levels of particles, but it won’t tell you what these mean: It’s on you to understand the readings. The unit will capture and rate Particulate Matter or PM as follows:
PM1 are extremely fine particulates with a diameter of fewer than 1 microns. (Wildfire smoke would fall in here)
PM2.5 (also known as fine particles) have a diameter of less than 2.5 microns. (Dust)
PM10 means the particles have a diameter less than 10 microns, or 100 times smaller than a millimeter. (Large dust particles)
Filtration & purification
The LG PuriCare AeroTower has a UVnano feature which is designed to kill bacteria and airborne nasties that get pulled into the purifier by bombarding them with UV light. It’s not something you’ll be able to see working, it’s something you can just trust is going the extra mile to circulate clean air back into the home.
The fan-purifier also has a true HEPA filter which LG claims captures 99.97% of fine dust and allergens.
LG doesn’t say how long the filter should last, but the small display screen on the unit will tell you when it’s at end of life.
Use on-device controls or included remote
You can control the action of the fan-purifier in three ways: using the included remote control, using buttons on the device, and using LG’s ThinQ app.
The remote control is very small and streamlined. It has all the important controls to adjust fan speed motion, to set a sleep timer, and also to adjust the information it shows on screen. The same touch controls are also on the top of the device.
Using the fan
Any time you use the fan, the purifier is automatically operating. If you only want purification, not blowing air, you just need to dial the fan speed down.
The fan has 10 speeds and three airflow modes:
Noise level: very quiet
This fan and purifier is ultra quiet. On Speed 1 it makes hardly any noise and there’s no discernible breeze from the device. Even on level 5/6 it’s not distracting or annoying and on Level 10, while its more noticeable, it’s certainly not unpleasantly loud.
App connection: LG ThinQ
One of the draws of this device should be that you can use your smartphone to control it and view air quality readings. I will say it was a nightmare for me to connect the AeroTower to the LG ThinQ app.
Before I launch into the hours I spent trying to resolve this issue, I will say this: You absolutely don’t need to connect to the app for this device to work. Using the aforementioned remote and on-device touch controls works just great.

You have to separate the 2.4G band from the 5G in your WiFi settings and then connects the phone to the 2.4 band. I recommend delete the app and reinstall to remove the error message in the app’s memory that must be keep repeating and causing the glitch. If your WiFi router keeps the two bands together as they call smart signal, the app will not be able to connects to the 2.4G. This is an issue with all apps that needs to connect a device to the 2.4G and your router merge them together. I have the same air purifier and other appliances connected to the LG ThinQ app and my iPhone Pro 13 and also my iPad Pro never had any problem connecting right away. The problem is when you tried to link it for the first time you had the router managing both WiFi bands together and that’s messed up with the app ability to find the 2.4G.

I have the Dyson tp09 and I have to say that the fan is pretty bad compared to a normal 3 blade fan aswell. I'm looking to buy the LG aero tower just because the design looks amazing. Makes my Dyson air purifier seem like the outdated one lol

I’m glad I’m not the only one who said this about LG ThinQ.. it’s beyond on belief how clunky & how poorly it functions; especially when they’re obviously competit with companies like Samsung who BLOW them away with Smart Things App. I personally have found it annoying because I mostly buy LG TVs & have had a few LG devices/appliances. My hope is that the LG TV’s HomeDashboard IOT functionally works better with this air purifier. I only went with this purifier since it got a crazy mark down to $299 & I like the ascetics. Great video though, i enjoy your content when I come across it! I suppose it finally time to subscribe! Haha

I love the fact that it dosent blow that strong air flow. I suffer from dry eyes and I cannot have a lot of direct air flowing on my face. I guess each consumer has to buy a product depending what their needs are. This product is perfect to me. I do not use the app. The remote control is enough.

Same with me, literally was one of the reasons I just ordered one yesterday, plus I have central air so air blowing on me would just be a negative.

Nice review, I personally have had no problems with set up. Maybe they updated the software? I have this and the Dyson and I must say that this is actually quieter than the Dyson, but it does lack the airflow directionality that the Dyson has.

I couldn't help but notice the design similarities between this Korean air purifier and Lotte World Tower in Seoul. I wonder if there was some influence there - intentional or subconsciously?

I was close to pulling the trigger on the LG site as they offered a $249.00 USD discount bringing it down to $300.00. You superb review changed my mind. My assumption is the price reduction is a lead in to drop a new updated model. I shall wait, per your “Spot On” review, for you to review the hopefully improved version. Thank you so very much.

Nice to find a review of someone actually talking about the effects they’ve experience with using a purifier. There is another video I just watched that blew my mind with all the info on these. “How much should clean air cost- Thomas Talhelm” he shows how to make diy ones for fraction of the cost with the same efficacy as the expensive ones. Very informative!

I thought I’d follow up with another warning for those thinking about buying this…….. I went with this LG Aero Tower since I thought the aesthetics looked much better in my living room. I’ve been using it for several months now; I think it works excellent, the app surprisingly works well & I like the modes. I’ve also played around with some air quality monitors to test its effectiveness at cleaning the air in my room. All that said, I’ve been trying to locate a replacement filter since purchasing the purifier, since I like ti have extra on hand. I have yet to find one and RU-vid reviews have stated they haven’t been able to find replacement filters either. I’m talking about searching online & calling many small retailers all over the country! I dk if it’s legitimately backordered or if LG just quietly discontinued the replacement filters; which would be unacceptable since it’s an expensive product still being sold at major retailers as well as on their website. Meanwhile, I have a $150 GermGuardian in my bedroom and never have issues finding filters for it.

Wow. That would essentially brick thousands of purifiers and make them useless. Wow.
