Review: Nikkor Z 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VR S Lens for Nikon Z system 

I just received mine 2 days ago and went to a wildlife reserve in Belgium (Grotte de Han) with a lor of different animals. This lens, with the Z9 and sometimes the 1.4 TC is a lighter solution than my Sigma 150-600, even if sigma is faster. So, after one day and 2000 shots, I'm convinced :-)

It is an amazing lens. Got it in January and used it in Yellowstone in winter.

finally, a review on this lens. I've had since February. Excellent lens and will be shooting the moon eclipse on it tonight!

I shoot birds and dogs a lot so this was very helpful. I've been thinking about the 24mm to 200mm but for the extra I would have so much more versatility. I would be trading wide angle for reach and they both look sharp but for my style of shooting I think this might be better. Thanks again

Hello Both, I am just waiting to get my hands on one. Ordered it start of December 2021 a month before I even thought about the Z9. Now I have the amazing Z9 but no lens. Just would like to see how fast focus is and how quiet it is. It would be amazing if it arrived this week as I am on a shoot all next weekend. Thank you.

I'm a bit back and forth at the moment given I really want the 200-600mm when that eventually hit the floor. Given how much of the same range they cover, I'm a bit uncertain how it will be owning both the 100-400 AND the 200-600... Given how many who claim the 100-400 to be a sharp lens there has to be something to it. I will either be pairing it with a Z9 or a Z7 II.

It would have been very handy to see what the F stop and focal distance was on each shot, especially as the 100-400 is reported to be soft at the long end.

Nice vid and guidance. I am surprised you did not also bring the ZTC20 with you to gain extra reach. Most of the hides are too elevated - I often struggle to find places to shoot in London WWT from low level vantage spots -- most often one is looking down at ground level action -- but as a member I will be returning soon with my 800mm to hunt for the spots. There are guided walks into the marshes which can be good. Did you find the twitchers/bird counters welcoming at London WWT -- some in the past seemed to despise photographers with long glass - or perhaps it was me!! Shooting entirely silently helps, but the hurumphing is clear one is not wanted by them in what they claim to be their domain (the sot they claim unofficially as their place).

How good is the 100-400mm image stabilization for video handheld? I have Z 5 + FTZ + Sigma 100-400mm and it's really difficult to keep it steady. My Nikon Coolpix B700 is actually pretty good at that.

I have a problem: I use Nikon Z9 with NIKKOR Z 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6 VR S lens. Firmware C 2.00 LF 1.10. Custom settings: a1 AF-C Focus; a6 AF activation Off(with out-of-focus release disabled). The shutter release priority is set at Focus. When the lens is set at 400 mm, the AF-ON and Shutter are pressed concurrently. The camera won't fire. But when the lens is set at 100 mm, the camera can fire. Please TRY with yours and see if you have the same problem. If you do have the same problem, please report to the Nikon at your country!

Nice review but I am wandering this . The 200500 also get good reviews. Would the Z 100-400 be worth more then twice the price? (For get weight)

Another Nikon Z lens that we won’t actually be able to buy in the UK. I wish Nikon would actually send us more of the existing line up. The 24-120 f4 and the 105 macro are impossible to find. Is every camera manufacturer the same?

Glad I replaced my 80-400 with the 100-400. Now if I could do the same for my 500 f4 with a new 600 Z, preferably PF faster than 6.3.

Please send the big shipment of Z9 in South Korea. Store told me to wait untill next year. Please do consider of the Nikon fans outside of USA too.
