I use it with the 1/2 gallon jars to pull the marinade into my beef or venison strips for jerky. It really speeds up the process and seems to get the marinade all the way through the meat, then into the dehydrator for 6-8 hours. Another great review.
Wow that is a great idea. I am going to try making jerkey from ground beef first and then sliced beef and will try that when I make the sliced batch. Thanks for watching.
That’s a great idea. I currently use the vacuum sealer bags but I end up wasting about a foot and a half of bag to prevent the liquid from seeping out. Just ordered them, can’t wait to try them out.
I went boujie. I purchased way too many of the food saver containers. The marinade ones are awesome. 9x9 4 high i think. Work perfect. I also got the quart pint gallon and 2 gallon and samich ones. Honestly they are ok but not worth the 3 or 4 hundred i paid for them. This ball jar sealer is news to me and seems awesome
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 what where and when did u get that machine? Yours looks even cooler than mine. I'm about 4 years from Costco. The new one is smaller. Mine has the accessory with the suction oval. Pull that off and it's just the nipple. Bag holder cutter and sealer. Then the vacuum. Dry wet pulse accessory marinade cancel. Does yours have more? It looks taller and thinner
That is a great idea about the workshop, we live in Louisiana so very very humid, all the nails and screws sitting in open coffee cans start to corrode, some stiff rusts. The labels on the coffee cans fade and peel so being able to see through the glass jars would be awesome! You are so smart.
You would have to be careful that bolts don't damage the jar. If you put one of those little moisture absorbing packs in the bottom of each jar, metal should stay like new. Thanks for watching.
I still have one of the original Food Savers that I've had for years. Mine came with the jar sealer and I've used it many times. I've never had a lid failure yet! Currently I have several jars of refrigerator dills from two years ago and they're still sealed. I opened one the other day to check them and they're just as good as when I first packed them up.
I didn't realize you could keep the refrigerator fills that long. Have to try that this summer. I have been giving it a good workout with this attachment. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much I didn't realize that the cylnder popped off. I have had my vacuum sealer for a few years so I don't have the instructions anymore. After I purchased a jar attachment sealer I was wondering what was wrong with the jars not keeping a seal. Then I came across your video, now I can get my jars sealed properly. Thank you.
Thank you for this demo!!!! This is exactly what I was looking for. Got a 4400 for Christmas and been wanting to learn how to use it with the bags and eventually get a jar sealer. I appreciate it A LOT!!!!!
I've been using this method for several years & it works great. The vacuum seal can release, over time, but an oxygen absorber packet extends the life greatly. I have dried beans over two years old that cook up like new. Fine powered storage, like flour. can be a problem. Cover the top of the flour with a coffee filter. I also have some baking soda in long term storage that has to be covered.
Sounds like I am the last person to try anything. 😀 I will have to find some of those packets. We don't plan on using it for flour because my wife has big sealed containers and goes through that quickly. Thanks for watching.
It's really a good gadget. The only thing you won't be able to use it for will be extremely fine powders like flour because while sucking the air, it will also suck the powder itself. I know people that use it for flour but before they put the lid on, the place a cupcake liner upside down inside the jar; apparently, it helps to block the flour from being sucked into the tube.
That is a good tip. These jars are small for flour and my wife uses large plastic sealed containers that hold 10 pounds so that won't be a problem for us. I was surprised by how good it worked. Thanks for watching.
That is a False statement about not using it for Flour... The extraction of the air does cause turbulence in the jar. You need to hold the level of product to no closer than an inch from the top of the jar and keep the rim clean of particles... I have been using this system since 1994 With Great Success... Good idea on using the cupcake liners though... Greg
Gregory Londos: What you call false I call it my own experience. What makes your opinion or experience more correct or truer than mine? As far as I know, we are here to share our experiences, to learn and huess what? peol do have different experiences with the same gadget. Allow and respect that before you say 'false'. BTW, flour is just an example of fine powder; I could have given other examples.
I have the 3920. It turns off, also. I love it!! I just put last night’s leftover rice in a smaller jar, vacuumed it, and put in frig. Keeps from drying out. I like being able to re-do if I don’t empty jar. Less landfill waste. 😉
This was so helpful, thank you so much! I’ve been trying to figure out how to add the lid saver to my accessory handle, and even the actual Food Saver accounts video didn’t actually show how the handle attaches to the lid! I had no idea the clear plastic part of the attachment piece came off! I’m super excited to seal all my dry food jars! Thank you 😊
I have a food saver, works great, don't use it very often, but I just buy the rolls and cut to fit whatever I need. I do have pre-cut bags too, but I've started using the rolls because it wastes less than the pre-cut bags that way...just cut to size, seal one side then put whatever you want sealed in it then seal the other side. I've never tried any of the food saver attachments or accessories...I think mine has the hose to do so but never have tried it. Great useful video...thank you.
We use ours all the time. This attachment is a great way to cut down on bag use for dry storage if you hav a supply of jars available. Thanks for watching.
I have one, and they are great. I find the more narrow sealer doesn’t work as well, so stick with the wide mouth. I once split up a package of cookies into six pint jars, and rationed them over the course of a year, as fresh as the first opening. You make me wonder how things that might rust would seal, I hadn’t thought in terms of hardware... even steel wool.
I didn't realize cookies could last that long. To remove moisture you need a pump that creates a higher vacuum then this unit to boil it off but this will keep humidity in the air from entering the jars so it should help. Thanks for watching
I think mine shuts off also, if I remember right, but with my seal a meal unit the jar sealer part is on the top right side. It looks different then yours but it has the same plastic part I have to take off. Those plastic bags that work with that plastic part you have to take off are reusable. I have some because they came with my unit, I would not go out and buy them either.
I make my own MREs ( meals ready to eat) with all dry ingredients and i put the spices in the middle when I vacuum seal them. If placed on the bottom, they tend to stick due to the compression and if I put them on top, it compromises the seal. I also place an oxygen absorber to keep things fresh and for long term. I love doing it this way cuz everything has been measured and all that is needed is to add it to boiling water after a long day of work, it is lovely.
Thank you for sharing!! I'm pretty sure we're going to start canning soon, so this was a great video for me to learn from. I appreciate this very much!
This won't help with canning, that must all be processed with heat to kill bacteria that can cause spoilage. This is more for extending the life of dry goods. We find the canning jars useful for all kinds of storage and have many laying around. Your should buy a Ball Blue Book or Ball Canning Guide and spend some time learning exactly what you are getting into. It's a lot of work to do it right but definitely worth it. Good luck with your venture into canning. Thanks for watching.
I have the same model Foodsaver and sealed powdered milk in pint mason jars this morning. I don’t have a wide-mouth adapter yet, so mine were regular jars. I noticed that my machine DOES cycle OFF automatically. It just takes more time. I also noticed that if I didn’t break the seal on the jar adapter by removing the hose, the adapter would remove the lid when I pulled it off. As for the joining biscuits, great idea. Tip: if they’ve sat around and gained moisture, microwave a few on a microwave safe tray. They’ll get HOT, which means moisture is driven off. I think I’ll put mine on low in the oven to dry them and seal in jars like you did.
That machine has since totally died and replaced with a new model. The biscuits don't shrink back down after drying. they seem to need to be re compressed to get back to the original thickness. Thanks for watching.
This is a helpful video, well done my friend. PS you have the same Foodsaver model I have, the stainless steel accent pieces are fantastic at showcasing fingertip smudges and even the slightest amount of grime. The remedy for me is to take a piece of carbon fiber film with an adhesive backing, and when stuck on the Foodsaver, it hides the smudging from foods and fingers and looks great.
For added protection on your dry goods you might try using oxygen absorbers. Put an absorber packet in with your ingredients and pump out the air. The absorber will remove any extra moisture or air borne pollutants that might remain in the jar.
I have been using the wide and small lids with these white vacuum lids - sometimes they won’t seal and the secret is to use two lids - yup - and I use a piece of folded up paper towel between the two lids and both wide and small lids on the jars seal great. Sometimes you have to gently pull the top lid off but sealing lid remains tight.
I have used them thousands of times and not had one problem. Wonder if your vacuum pump doesn't have a high enough flow to overcome any small leaks at the start. I would try a different vacuum pump and see if it makes a difference. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 The large jar vacuum top worked great for months then stopped working last weekend; smaller vacuum top never did work. The vacuum machine works great for vacuum and sealing bags.
My Food Saver didn't come with an accessory hose so I bought one on Amazon. It didn't work. What I didn't realize is that the accessory port on the Food Saver is color coded. The end of the accessory hose must match the same color (grey or green). Once I bought the correct accessory hose, sealing a jar was just as easy as in this video. Thanks for the demo.
I have a FoodSaver that I love and I'm going to try doing this because I keep a lot of dry food in mason jars. Thanks for the great video and I love what looks like a wooden vacuum bag storage you made :)
We use this for all out dehydrated food now and it's so easy to keep everything fresh. That's a stand I built for my old microwave that since has been replaced by an over stove model. Thanks for watching.
You said one use bag, I just bought a food saver machine from Costco they were on sale and it came with those zip lock bags and you zip lock the bag first then you use the little gadget you have to take out the air in the zip lock bag but once you use the stuff in that bag you can reuse the bag just by washing it out with soap and water and let them air dry and you can use them again. This isn't my first food saver machine I use them a lot and so often that I have to replace them every 5 to 8 years, this is my 4th one. Larry
Never used that kind of bag. We just use the rolls and toss the bags. Are those bags good for freezing? We have had this one for 4 years and use it often with the garden and bulk purchases. I was hoping it would last 10 years but time will tell. With this lid sealer the number of bags we use should drop considerably. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 Amazon has them for $12.34 which is half of what the food saver site sells them for. I had to double check and sure enough they are the real deal.
We have the same unit and ours shuts itself off. I just let it go until I hear the pitch of the pump go up and it stops itself. Also, we have the small jar vacuum and it does work, however, I find it works best if I put an additional lid on the jar upside down before pushing the pump lid onto the jar ( smallmouth only). Never have a problem with the largemouth unit. In my opinion, it is not worth the bother with smallmouth jars. FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
I guess that I chose the right size. We don't use the regular mouth jars for storage. I let it run for a minute to check after a previous comment said it should shutdown and was afraid the pump may burn up if I let it run longer. all the greenlights were on and didn't shut off. It must use the same sensor as for bagging and that works right. I have no idea. Thanks for watching.
i used this to reduce the smell of a certain garden herb and it does completely seal smell better than anything else! i bought a harbor freight hand pump vacuum bleeder and shoved one of the rubber elbows into the white jar sealer piece and it works great. only complain is when your hand pumping it, takes a while and the jar lids get worn out after bending them to remove them. best to figure out a way of removing the lid without bending it. also cleaning the lid and sealing area is key. also aligning it on the jar before putting on the sealer
What is the model number of your vacuum sealer? I need to replace mine soon and I like the looks of the model you have. Thanks for the tips. I love mine. The bags are actually less expensive than ziplock types. I agree with you, don't use the cheaper versions and throw them out don't reuse them. There are good deals on Amazon for the bags. Great video. Keep them coming.
Mine was from Costco about 4 years ago. It says V4980 on the bottom I think it is specific for Costco. They sell a newer model now that looks better www.costco.com/FoodSaver-2-in-1-Vacuum-Sealing-System.product.100428458.html . I pick the rolls up at Costco when they are on sale. They sell a nice bulk pack of the FoodSaver brand. Thanks for watching
After the seal, carefully remove the hose from the jar sealer. Easier than working the whole sealer off the jar when it is under vacuum. The square end of a "church key" bottle opener removes the sealed lid from the jar, and does not bend the lid. Saves your fingernails.
I find you need to leave at least a half inch headspace for the longest lasting seal, and I always, always use a clean cloth to wipe down the jar lip before adding the lid. Then I make a point of checking over sealed jars every few months to make sure they've stayed sealed. For your foodsaver model, I'm surprised it doesn't automatically shut off. Perhaps you haven't left it on long enough?
Wiping the jar is a good idea. Several comments have said it should shutdown but I tried letting it run for a minute with all the green lights on and was afraid the pump would burn up if the pump remained on longer the way it sounded. Thanks for watching.
I am seeing comments that the wide mouth one works better than the smaller one so this is the easiest to use one. It is great to be able to seal the standard lids. Thanks for watching.
I was using their storage containers for my coffee, but those seem finicky... they don't always keep the seal. Now I'm doing it this way and feel much better about it.
Is there a resource that will tell you what foods to can, freeze dry, vacuum seal, etc.? Also, would be nice to know just how long the shelf life would be, for each food item, and how it was preserved. The whole objective, for us anyway, is to have enough food for two people, that will last up to ten years if need be. I really don't think we will be here that long, but overall, I am just wanting to know which foods will store the longest, and the best way to preserve them. As for meat, we will have steak, beef cuts, chicken parts, fish, and bison. How long will RAW meat last in the pantry? Thank you
I think the only way to make food last 10 years is to freeze dry it and store in special bags with an oxygen absorber. Check the FDA site for that type of information. MREs are probably the lowest cost option that have safe expiration dates. Thanks for watching.
I say seal a meal but I mean food saver ( the one you have for your jar is the one I have) I have always called them seal a meal but I know they are different! 😊
I hope that makes sense. I have the sealer lid, but need a machine. Would like to buy one you recommend. Can't see what brand you have on your counter.
Hey, reaching out from 2023..I just got this vacuum sealer and can't seem to get the clear plastic off to use the accessory tube. Any tips? The instructions say "remove it" but, they don't say how. It seems to be glued in place. Thanks.
Mine died and it has been replaced. It should pull right off. If it doesn't I wonder if it was old stock and the o ring has gotten hard making it impossible to pull off. Contact Foodsaver and see what they say. Thanks for watching.
They are well worth it if you have a garden or shop at Costco. We buy the rolls when Costco has a sale and they work the best. I tried some of the cheap rolls from Amazon and everything got freezer burn so it doesn't pay to skimp on the bags. Thanks for watching.
Throw them out. They don't cost much and are worth it the way the food stays if you buy in bulk or have a garden. Zip locks used to cost us a lot more and we lost food to freezer burn.
Did you get your foodsaver from COSTCO? My Costco didn't have them could that be purchased on line? The cheaper Foodsaver does not seal well at all. Thanks!!
Yes we got it 4 years ago at Costco. They have a newer model now and sell it online also. Watch for a sale. Ours sees a lot of use and has worked great. We had a different brand before this that did not work very good. Thanks for watching.
Hello. Thanks for the video! I have a foodsaver and I love it. I just purchased the wide mouth jar sealer online - can't wait to get it. Can I use it for sauce and not have to refrigerate or freeze it? When I make sauce, I like to make a lot and I freeze them in regular containers, sometimes I have a layer of ice at the top.
No. This is used for keeping moisture from dry foods to keep them fresh mostly. Sauce must be frozen or canned for storage. You should learn how to properly can sauce. Thanks for watching.
It is a older model from Costco that they don't sell anymore. Costco has a new model www.costco.com/FoodSaver-2-in-1-Vacuum-Sealing-System.product.100428458.html that looks better. Thanks for watching.
If you have an extra grand to waste and room to store it that'll work. one big enough for 1/2 gallon jars costs a fortune. this is less then $10 and does the same thing. Thanks for watching.
depends on what you are storing. Dry goods can last a year but some things may only last a day. It's just vacuum sealing that does not hit temperatures that can destroy bacteria so it doesn't increase shelf life but just keeps things fresher by removing air and humidity. Thanks for watching.
I am still eating fermented pickles from last summer that I vacuum packed in 1/2 gallon jars and put in the spare fridge. Just leave plenty of headspace and don't put a lot of vacuum on the jars after the pickles start bubbling. Thanks for watching.
I don't think so. Most fresh food has bacteria that must be killed with heat or cold to store it longer. This type of sealing seems to be more for dry goods. We love our food saver. It is great for freezing items from the garden and breaking up bulk items from Costco. Thanks for watching.
Yes, I put fresh vegetables that are cut up in the jars , they should not be sitting in a lot of water ( perhaps use a salad spinner) they kept a lot longer . Great if you are taking salads to work for a week.
Are you using a vacuum to seal the lid to the jar or are you creating a vacuum in the jar? A good test for this would be putting some marshmallows in a jar and see what happens.
Creating a vacuum in the jar that holds the lid in place. Marshmallows should get larger as the vacuum reduces the atmospheric pressure on them. Thanks for watching.
I don't understand why mine is not working. I am a canner (water and pressure) so I'm not new. Thought I'd get this gadget to keep my over abundance of dehydrated herbs fresh. It won't seal.
I have 3 and all work perfectly. Use new clean lids, ball jars, and wipe the jar seal area before starting. Be sure the blue silicone gasket is properly seated in the adapter. Place it over the jar lid then start your machine. press down slightly for a second. Remove the vacuum hose when done and carefully remove the adapter. Mine work every time. It won't work with other type jars like old mayonnaise jars. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 thank you for responding. I am using ball or kerr everything. I think it might be the foodsaver. If found one on Marketplace that is just like yours for $135 with a few rolls of bags, etc. I've had my black foodsaver for so long, I had no idea how expensive the newer ones are. I bought mine, I think, for $80+ dollars!
This one died on me and Costco is the best place to get a good deal on one. Becareful buying used because this model has problems with the switch built in it to sense the bag.
@@keidithompson6391 i push down a little when starting to vacume but I found small mouth jars are more difficult to seal than large. , what i did was drilled small hole in center of a used lid and smoothed it, then put it on top of the small lid your sealing it. this way it doesn't seal with 2 lids. it pops right off. i originally put 2 lids on but they sealed together and didn't want to pry the top one off and ruin the bottom lid.
Hi, I have just watched your video from the UAE. Can you please tell me where can I buy those jars with the correct lids? I guess, I can online buy them online.
They are standard Ball canning jars. Here is the website www.freshpreserving.com/products contact them to find a distributor in the UAE . Thanks for watching.
Im from the uk can you let me know what make your vacuum sealer machine is , becauase over here we only get the little clamp machines your s is way bigger with accessories nozzle.
There are shortages of all things for food preservation from china. Some companies are even price gouging when they get stock. Big seed shortages already as everyone is prepping for a long pandemic. Thanks for watching.
I wanted to see how you remove the top of the jar after being sealed. This is incomplete video without showing how to remove the top of the jar after sealing.
The one Costco sells. I got a new one last week and there is a recent video. They have their own numbers. This one broke and never worked right. Thanks for watching.
